James Levine is also one of the most greatest conductors. For many years was director of Met and New York Phil, he also had conduct Wiener Phiharmoniker and Berliner.
+Nick Battistella I'm far from the only one to think that. I'd also throw in Caruso, Bjorling and Corelli. Pav's voice was thin compared to Mario's and those others. He definitely is straining in this rendition, and cuts off the ending abruptly. Pav was a lyric tenor not suited for the heavier roles, and Domingo was much more versatile. I don't mean to imply or insinutate he wasn't great, as he clearly was, but he definitely wasn't the best ever.

At first, I wasn't expecting much in the way of agility for what Rossini demands, but I was surprised. I checked out a few other Rossini tenors who sing the song (including Florez), and I have to say Pavarotti does a far better job with this song than what I've heard. I'd love to hear someone like Brownlee take on a tune like this, but until I do, in my humble opinion, Pavarotti still owns this one.

His voice has a slightly different character to it in this performance in comparison to some of the (bootleg) recital recordings of his from the early and mid 70s (available elsewhere on TH-cam). Perhaps we'd use the word 'darker' to describe the change in his tone. Still uniquely beautiful though! 🙂
What is it with people mentioning Lanza in this video? You're completely missing the context, how can you compare a recorded movie scene with a long live recital? Besides, Lanza never had the training to actually fill a concert hall like this (a big what if in his case...).
