Thank you for this! My Sunshine went into brumation for the first time when she was 7 months old. I was terrified! She stayed in brumation for 6 weeks; she refused to eat during that time. I kept giving her baths once every 2 weeks because I was sooo afraid she would get dehydrated. But, I did notice that she didn’t lose any weight. This year I notice her sleeping more and slowing down, I brought in a fecal exam to my vet and she was clear. So, I am more relaxed about it because i know she is healthy.
Thank you for all you do for us!💕

I have 2 beardies that just turned a year old. One has already gone through a partial brumation for the last couple weeks. The other shows no signs at all. Very individual like you said.
Thank you for all the education you have brought me 💙🦎

My Erni is 4-5 years old. Every fall, I start to worry that she's not acting like herself. She gets sluggish, and even sleeps during the day. Then I remember, it's her version of brumation! She doesn't go into a full sleep, and she still devours any insects I give her. It also only lasts a few weeks.

I have a 6 month old bearded dragon and she is showing symptoms of brumation. The first day of September she started slowing down with eating and was very limp and sleepy. We gave her a warm bath which helped her pass stool. The next day she was fine for most of the day. Then again back to being very lethargic and less basking. Appetite has slowed down. During bath and sun time she seemed to come back to life. We had no idea we were disturbing this brumation period. Thank you so much for your video.

I found your videos when I was thinking of getting a beardie, you helped me learn a lot! I ended up going for it, and my Little Nemo looks to be going into his first brumation now (he's just over a year old). I'm so scared of messing up, I'm a helicopter reptile mom (first reptile) and the learning curve was STEEP. Thanks for making these videos, they help ♡

it's rare for them to go through brumation at a really young age. Although they can be picky eaters. my beardie for the first year almost primarily only ate insects. make sure you have the proper lighting and humidity

My bearded Dragon is 5 years old and has NEVER brumated. The vet says he is a healthy weight every year. He is active, very happy, curious, and friendly. He has a place to hide, two basking spots, perfect temperatures, and gets well taken care of.

Great job with mentioning getting them checked when they show signs of brumation. Our 9 month old, Drago was showing those signs, I took a fecal sample in, and he had mites. Always important to get that checked!

I'm a new beardie mum to a 14 month old beardie. I'm not sure if he is brumating or if he is just settling in. We have only had him a week so I dont even know his usual routine and interactiveness, or if he is just this way. He can stay in the same position for 20 hours and likely longer. If I get him out he will just stay still and not move at all. He may try to climb to a high point on me if I am moving around, but he will generally just stay where you put him. He is hardly eating and refuses all salads. His prev owner fed him around 10 hoppers every 2 days and cucumber. Im trying to switch him to mainly veg but he isnt having any of it. Not sure if all he is doing is normal or if he is brumating, or he is generally just a quiet chilled dragon. He will still bask or sit in the cooler end of his viv. I'm really not sure as I've never had a beardie before and I'm slightly worried.. any advise welcome

This video is SOOOO helpful!!!! My bearded dragon, Friend, has not eaten in a while and has been mostly sleeping. At first, when she slowed and began to only eat leafy greens, I was very confused. She usually turned away from me when I offered her leafy greens in the past. She then started to eat only when I held her foods directly in front of her. She would either eat three crickets and turn away or eat about ten, in her hungrier moments. I have always celebrated when she poops, which used to be daily. It let me know that she was not experiencing impaction. She slowed her eating at the end of Winter (Virginia, USA time), and she stopped all together during mid-Spring. Her final poop was two weeks ago. It was only a small amount. She seemed to empty all that she had in her. Since then, she has refused all food offered to her. Not even slipping a bite when I'm not around.
I was afraid that it was due to her having now outgrown her tank. I have let her roam around the house for over a week so that she has more space until I can replace her tank, but she only sleeps. She walks around exploring the house, scouting out other sleeping spots. I thought that I was just boring her and not providing her an enriching enough environment. I never thought of brumation! I just thought that I was doing a poor job at being a pet owner. Now I know to let her be. I hope to also consult with a vet, but I don't expect to materialize a poop sample anytime soon.
Friend is 10-11 months old. I purchased her from a pet shop, so she's likely 6-8 weeks older than the nine months that she's lived with me. Either she is brumating or she has parasites. The description of eating veggies and slowing down seems to match the description in the video. Also, so does the overlay of the Australian seasons vs the American seasons. As Friend is sleeping now and no longer eating, Winter is beginning in Australia. Go figure!
I'll do my best to help her better during this time. Thanks for this video!

Thanks for the informative video. This would be my 2nd beardy and the first to go into brumation, so I'm new to this.
I had an older dragon for several years while I was living more inland, so I'm going to assume that the temperatures didn't drop enough for him to want to sleep it out.
The difference now, is that I got a baby dragon a few months back, and I've since moved to the coast. Different ages, different climates.
Three days ago he was as energetic and hungry as always. Then over night he's just started sleeping all day. While he does wake up from time to time, he only does so to move to a different spot to sleep.
I've now lowered his thermostat down to 20c/68f, this should help to stop the average daytime temperature from dropping below 15c/59f, nighttime temperature regulation is a another story.

Well , I had been trying to feed my 1 year old for the past two months , he started by refusing bugs… I tried all diff types and then he stopped eating his salads too. I was super worried till a group on Facebook mentioned that they may go into brumating from June to august because that is winter in Australia… he started all of this in June when he was 9-10 months old. Man am I relieved because our other beardie started a month ago and I didn’t know why they were refusing food and acting sluggish. That second Beardie is two months younger so I’m guessing they both hit it 9-10 months old and during our summer and Australia’s winter.

Elle help! Hi! I'm kim and my male beardie, Kobe is 13mths old and asleep in the corner of my bed. He's against 2 outside walks. The first 2 times he slept 2 days. This time he was mad when he went back there. I had tried to get him to wear the fuzzy sock sweater. That was Wednesday the 16th of December early morning. I've read lots of articles, and rewatching your videos, coz I'm getting old and forgetful. I worked him a month and a half ago. He's gained weight, appetite is good, poop is back to normal. He had just eaten superworms and greens and a dozen crickets. Hasn't had any signs of brumation. In fact he's not been sleeping as much. So I don't know when or if I'll hear from you. I'm going to wake him up. I worry and as I have told other people I would go crazy without him. I'm lonely for him but more worried. Don't know how long is too long to let him go without waking him to poop. So if you can let me know your thoughts it would be great. It's cold here in Missouri!

I would just note that if you let your animal brumate free range like I do they might go in a bedroom or bathroom (generally cool dark areas) and try to brumate there. That's what mine is doing for her first brumation. She likes it to be completely dark all day as much as possible and as cool (my place rarely is less than 70 degrees F and certainly not lower than 50 degrees F). Just don't let it be lower than 50 degrees is what I'm hearing online (farenheit). And she doesn't seem to want her basking lights and all at all unless she comes out briefly of brumation (time to give her a bath it seems to me, so I do). She is just 1 and 1/2 years old or so.

I had a bearded dragon that was a suurender she was extremely thin and had metabolic bone desease she showed no signs of mishaped limbs or abnormal movement in her limbs. When i took her to the vet they gave me two types of injections that i had to give her every day for a couple of weeks i got her nice and fat and healthy then she went straight into brumation after a couple of months of having her. She was in brumation for 5 months all she did was sleep. She showed no signs of weight loss. I was still very worried and 5 month is way too long for a beardie to be in brumation so i tried getting her metabolism up by giving her more heat and uvb it did not work. Her metabolism had actually picked up but she was not active and refused to eat and within two days she lost all the weight and unfortunately passed away.
I have a new beardie now. I got him nov 12th of 2022 he was 4 months old. He went into brumation for the first time in novemeber of 2023 and it lasted untill the begging to mid january but he would go in and out when he would wake up id let him soak for about 15 mins. As soon as i set him in the tub he would drink and start splashing. Welhen i fed him he would eat maybe 5 mealworms or take a couple bites of veggies. Bask for a moment then go right back to sleep. I was very worried with his brumation becuase of the beardie i had before him that i saved but he came out of it very good and he ate so moluch when he did.

Godzilla started digging and glass surfing last week. She’s a girl, 14 months, so I thought she was making eggs but then she slowed eating the dubia roaches. She then refused a hornworm! Still ate her salads till a few days ago. She’s also been super sleepy. Barely basking. And today I gave her a bath. After, she got into her hide on the cool side and has not budged. We have a vet appointment tomorrow. Her last poop was maybe yesterday or the day before. She’s in a bio tank so the poops disappear pretty quick. Can the vet extract a poop sample from her directly like they can sometimes do with dogs?

I have a seven month old fancy bearded dragon and he scared me half to death this morning it snowed and it sent him into brumation. He was hiding in his log and look like he broke his neck. I got dr appintment for him in two weeks but he is up and alert and eating and pooping now. I thought he fell and broke his neck he was laying and stiff and his eyes was open with his neck cockeyed. I just cuddled and rubbed on him and he woke up out of it and ate his veggies and ate his crickets and pooped like normal and running around his room. I was in tears thinking I was a bad mama!

I'm pretty sure thats normal. Some bearded dragons still eat at times during brumation. My bearded dragon had hers about 2 weeks ago. She ate, but not like she normally does, she was also slow moving and constantly wanted to sleep. Had to look it up under an actual breader and everything was alright. A week later and she's back to her myself and moving around more and sleeping normally.

I have 2 beardies. Lizzie is about 2 1/2 and Lulu is about 1 1/2. Lizzie brumated last year on and off for a few weeks. This year she’s slowed down, but if I set her up for it, would probably brumate. Lulu definitely want to sleep. She stays under her hammock that she basks on. Mommy keeps putting her back, but she wants to sleep. She’s not very interested in food too much either. I’m going to get her to do a poop then make a soft bed under her hammock, turn her heat bulb off and let her sleep. I’ll get her up for some water, but that’s it.
If Lizzie shows the same inclination with not eating, I’ll do the same with her.
They are both females. They both had eggs. Lizzie needed surgery to remove hers and Lulu’s body has reabsorbed hers. Both around this time of year, one year apart!

My Beardie is 6-7 months old and I think he may be brumating....He is very lethargic, eating a little every 4-5 days (that is when he is more alert), he will potty after that also. But for the past few days, he has been laying there, opening and closing his mouth, almost like he is stretching.

I just got my Bearded dragon and he’s only 6 months old. I noticed he didn’t come out of his burrow yesterday so I got kind of nervous. He did poke his head out and open his eyes a bit but he seemed very tired. I’m hoping he’s just going into brumation but I’m not sure if they go into that state at this age or not. This is my first beardy so I’m still trying to find out how this all works.

So mine has basically stopped eating about two months ago, but she never went to sleep, she would hide often and seem to want to but then come out shortly to bask. only thing she would eat was super worms but not everyday every few days. She did lose weight but i dont think its parasite. I think its because i treated her normal as if she was not going into brumation , she went off food and she still seem to bask off and on but mostly hide but never sleep so i think her metabolism never slowed really down because i did take her out sometimes when she seem to come to the window towards me. I give her water to by a bottle to keep her hydrated but i think after watching this im gonna keep her lights off. See how she acts for the next 4-5 days.she just pooped her few superworms she ate the other the day before yesterday. So gonna see how it goes.

My Beardie Whiskers 🦎 hasn't experienced brumation yet, but she'll be a year old on September 30th, 2020. I have had Beardie's in the past THAT also never experienced brumation 🤷 But I want to be prepared for THIS possiblity.

Hi Elle. I have no idea if you read these comments, but the way your dragon brumates, in and out... mine does that. He's 14 months old and this is his first brumation. He started on 11.10.24 and had gone in and out 3 or 4 times. My question is, when will I know he's actually out and done and I can feed him? Is there a secret handshake or something i should look for? First time owner here and thank you for all you do!

My bearded dragon is now 3 years old, it seems like he is in the middle of brumation he is in out all day. This is his first year. Doesn’t really poop much. Eats a lot so for me I still feel the need to keep him having regular poops. If he has eaten and hasn’t pooped in four days I give him pumpkin purée. 3 ml to be exact and man I never knew how sharp his teeth were until he bit the surgeon he really hates me pretty much dripping it on his nose until he starts licking. He eventually gets annoyed enough to attack. And then I squeeze it in his mouth and get him off of it. Not easy but half hour later he is getting constepated and eventually poops. If I don’t do this he won’t poop naturally even with all his regular lights on. This is the first year this happens and I think it has to do with the fact that I changed my blinds in my room and in the day it’s a lot of light and then when it starts getting dark I close the curtains. I think this has triggered him into brumation. He has never been in brumation and it’s honestly confusing sometimes to be able to tell the difference. However I have to say I updated his lights and put a cave with a hole in it. He hangs half way out of it. But if I drop a Dubia in it’s almost like he catches in it midair. I have also started to give him better care calcium and dubia instead of adult crickets. I am pretty sure he is in brumation but idk how to really do it. It’s kinda a trial period for me.

Oh my god sameeee! I feel like he’s still too young to brumate but he is doing those things, not basking and hiding. He’s still got a huge appetite in the morning and poops right away. I got a fecal exam and he’s good. But still sleeps all day after pooping.

@@dayanaperez9728 I still need to do a poop smear, just to make sure. Theres only one reptile vet in my town and hes expensive and money is tight right now. I'm expecting only a partial brumation because she'll sleep for a couple days then perk up and eat like a damn horse.

Rescued a bearded dragon just before he was 1 year old. That first Fall, beginning of Sept. he kept digging holes in my soft flower beds. Then he went into brumation about Sept 15 and finally became back active about March 15th. And had done the same the last two years but this year he has become active of Feb. 17th. I can't tell yet if he will continue sleeping or will keep waking up each morning. Unclear if or when I should feed him?

  • @quatiec9987

I'm not sure if mine is brumating or not. I've had him a year and he ate a lot of mealworms the other day. But i tried to feed him today and he didnt want any. He's been sleeping on the cool side of his tank and sometimes in his hide. I've always got him out to run around every day. Lately, the past two days, he has just slept on me. So i wonder if its brumation or if its this weather that has him kinda blah.

my bearded dragon is not even a year and it has slept in 2 days in a row. I have woke him up 2 times and trying to give him food, but hes not interested. It has been awake after I woke him up but some hours later he went back and slept. I don't know what to do because it is very young to brumate. The temperature is about 24 in the middle of the Day, in the nights the temperature is about 20 degrees. The bearded dragon has had Mites about a month ago, but I think I have removed every mite on the bearded dragons body. So I'm not sure why it has slept in almost 3 days in a row. I gave him a bath in the middle of its sleep and it pooped a lot and it drank some water. Can someone explain what might be its problem? Is it because of the mites that he had or is it a early Brumation? please help :)

I just got a bearded dragon from a friend who cant care for him anymore, I got him last night and he is really thin. She told me he came out of brumation thin and shes been feeding critical care to bulk him up, she says he's gotten alot bigger, but he is still pretty thin. I honestly don't know very much about him because she seems to not really want to explain or tell her exact care for him the past few months, but is this something I should be super concerned about or is there anything I can do at home to encourage him to be eat?

Hey so I have Kratos he’s a gala red dunner 10 months old , I had noticed he started staying out of the basking spot and up on his rock wall away / hiding under the rock wall / hiding In his log . His eating slowed down a bit but not too crazy I thought he was too young to Brumate honestly.

Ubv is good, heat is good, she started to avoid the basking light a month ago and her eating slowed down. She's bright and her fat pads are good. I gave her a bath a few times but she will go back to hiding.

We just adopted one. We believe he is about a year old. He has been staying in his tank for about 3 days now. He will open his eyes a little but haven't left to bask or eat. After watching your video. I'm concerned about the fact that he did not go to the bathroom. He only poops in the bathtub about even 3 days. This didn't happen before he started napping. What do I do?

He will go under his hammock for days and never move from that spot for days. He did poop the other day and he gapes every so often.

My bearded dragon has been sleeping for weeks and came out one time to bask. I hadn’t taken her to the vet for any testing, because I assumed it might be brumation since I have my AC running. Should I interrupt her sleep to bring her into the vet for parasite testing? She hasn’t pooped in quite a while, so I wouldn’t even have a fecal sample to bring in. Not sure if I should leave her be or bring her into the vet. She hasn’t lost much weight and doesn’t look sickly.
