Saw a lot of wildlife hiking off-trail in Lamar - Yellowstone National Park

- This is an early June, 2020 (In the video I said early May but you can tell by the vegetation and lack of snow that it is not May, sorry for the mistake) hike in the Lamar area off-trail. You can always see a lot of wildlife in this area including bears. In fact I have never done this hike without seeing at least one bear. On this hike I saw one black bear. You also have a good chance to see grizzly bears especially in the open flat areas. Please always take bear spray. This area also has a lot of research projects and closed areas so watch for park service signs that restrict access.

Still scares me, Stan, when you hike upon a graveyard, where there’s a multitude of antlers and bones lying upon the ground . Beautiful scenery and I love seeing the babies in the spring.

That was a plethora of wildlife Stan. You're a man after my own heart - get off the beaten path away from as many people as possible and just saunter through God's creation. Hopefully this August I'll make it up there and do just that. That Lamar area sure is rich in wildlife. Again, thanks for sharing and great video!

Hey nice video by the way! Thanks for posting these videos! I’m always looking for new places to hike and I think I’m going to do this hike tomorrow. Hiking for 8 hours is right up my alley. I also take my time on hikes shooting a lot of video for upcoming episodes on my channel. I would really like to see all those antlers too! Hopefully I can find them based on your map in this video. Great to see all the forage. Over here on the eastern edge the park we are having an incredibly dry year. Very little snow and almost no rain this spring. It may be a starvation winter for the elk and deer.

Stan Mills , yes sir I live in Oklahoma, my wife and I spent our 25 anniversary in yellow stone last year and loved it. With a busy life I’m hoping it doesn’t take another 25 years for us too return. Stan I’ll be honest, Jennifer and I love to hike but in Yellowstone we didn’t hike because of grizzlies. But after watching your video’s you’ve shown us we could have ... thank you sir.
I just hiked a 2 mile portion of the Specimen trail up the steep hill yesterday. I would like to do a 15 miler soon though.
that's my trail!!! I walked right onto a big black wolf laying in the sage, 50 meters away in Oct.

Looks like the trap door was closed. A lot of sheds in one direct area. People seemed pretty calm at the bear sightings. Someone almost hit our truck last year after the bear was long gone. It was a guy from another country with a rental.
I would find those bear jams annoying!! Thanks for showing us the "real hike".
Colleen, they could be but I am heading to the trailhead very early so I never see any people or traffic. But bear jams and all other jams are just expected because that is why people come to the park; to see wildlife. And the only way for 99.9 percent of people to do that is in their car. What I don’t think is quite right is the park officials making people move when they finally get a chance to see something. I think bear jams, wolf jams, whatever jams should just be an accepted part of the park. When people go to Yellowstone they should expect traffic delays and just slow down and enjoy themselves in a relaxing way. I think they are kind of fun because watching the people can be almost as interesting as watching the animals. Thank you for your comments.
@@StanMills I think I heard you laughing at the bear jam, was that because of something silly you saw a person or persons do? You're totally right about the people watching! Sometimes they are more fun to watch than the wildlife! Unfortunately cause of this whole "virus" situation, there a no crowds of people to watch! Its definitely give and take, wildlife in ALL areas has come out more than in previous years because of all the people hiding in their homes, so now the people watching is down but the wildlife watching is way up!

I love seeing all the animals looking so healthy, happy and unstressed. It’s so beautiful with the green grass and wildflowers. Are the mosquitoes bad? Why are there so many horns shed? Do they grow them back? Was that a bear release cage at 8:04? Why would they leave it? What do you think about all the people trying to see the bears/ get photos? Does it stress them? Thanks for posting!!

I noticed those signs too! I was just there yesterday trying to figure out a elk vs wolf encounter. There was a female elk standing her ground all day yesterday acting very uneasy and barking!!! She was there for at least 15 hours. There was a lone wolf in that area too. It’s my guess that the wolf killed and removed her calf which made her go into this mode? The area was just on the other side of the river at the bridge near the Slough Creek rd turn off which is the area that is currently off-limits depicted in your video. I wanted to go investigate and try to video what was transpiring but it was off limits plus I couldn’t cross the creek!
so beautiful. two questions, please: (1) i have been looking for off trail routes and I am told not to because of thermal features that I could run into. I only saw grass in your video, no thermal features that you saw ? (2) I noticed maybe a social trail in part of the video, is this close or parallel to an established trail that you hiked into for a while ? Thanks for the video !!!
No thermal features there. But if you ever see a thermal feature then simply don’t hike on or near it. Those are animal trails that you see in the video. The thing you should think about is your confidence in dealing with grizzlies. Their behavior is different in the back country then what you see along the road or areas where people are at. They don’t expect to see people back there off trail. Thank you for your comments.

Nice video as usual. Have you been up slough creek lately. Got a spot at camp site 2S4 in slough creek from the 20 through 23 of this month and was wondering about the run off. Going in there to fly fish hopefully if they open it.
Yes. I hiked to the boundary yesterday. The water is going down. I will upload the video in a couple days so you can see what it looks like right now. It will be real nice on those dates I am sure.

How were you able to access that part of the park in early May of this year when it was closed for recreational use until June 1? I apologize in advance if you've already explained that you work for the Park Service. I just come across your videos on TH-cam occasionally and enjoy the glimpse of the park.
I know. I saw I was saying May instead of June. Seemed like no one was noticing. But this is early June. You can tell by the vegetation and no snow. It is too much trouble to change and upload the video again. There is always someone that watches the details. Thank you very much for your comments.

Yes. But not in use right now. If it was in use then they would put up warning signs everywhere around the area.

Beautiful, and so much verdant vegetation for the grazers! You don't want to come across a grizz that has recently been released from one of those capture cages, for sure.
You are right about that. I think he would not be in a good mood. That particular capture cage is locked up and not being used right now. Normally they are well marked with signs if one is in use. I come across them from time to time. Thank you for your comment.
I am very surprised that the area is not overrun with undergrowth or thickets.
Corena, it is just the opposite. There are so many elk and bison. It stay grazed down. Yellowstone has had problems with the elk destroying all the willow thickets. That is were the wolf is helping out. Thank you for your comments.
