  • Ok, Here is an interesting device that just received from China! It claims to be a 100 MHz bandwidth, portable hand held o-scope for about $100. I actually do some extensive testing of this device, and I beg to differ.. but it is not bad for what it is. Single channel, light weight, compact and convenient to use.. maybe not quite 100 MHz bandwidth, but I will show you what I mean.. Hope you enjoy!!

    Learning basic electronics. Have a few multi-meters.
    I'm researching "cheapie" less than $100 oscilloscopes.
    I read that the most important spec is bandwidth.
    I've noted that $40 to $100 scopes have severe bandwidth limitations ranging from 200K maybe up to ~1.0 MHz with reasonable (+/-5% ?) accuracy. I've noted this $80 scope that advertises 100 MHz bandwidth, but is reasonably accurate only below less than half that, maybe 30 to 40 MHz. I'm wondering if all the cheapies greatly exaggerate their specs like this. They call it "Chinese specs", I've learned.
    What I would like to know is 1) what type of testing can be done with reasonable accuracy with such low bandwidth scopes, and 2) what types of testing should be totally out of the question/avoided.
    I understand the guideline that a scope should have a bandwidth 5 times the frequency of the things being measured. My question deals with what types of circuits generate frequencies that are in this lower bandwidth range.
    My scope functionality question pertains to testing these kinds of circuits: Beginning hobbyist testing such as in Platt's Make: Electronics or Basic Arduino type systems.
    $100 is my absolute limit; preferring $40 to $80 range. This is just for a "toe in the water" "explore the basics of scopes" sort of thing. I know that if I spend "just a mere $200 more" I can get a "real scope." And no, don't want to mess with used or eBay.
    Here are 4 scopes in my price range:

      That is funny.. "Chinese Specs!" Thanks for the great information. The analog bandwidth should be at least the frequency you are trying to measure.. and ... the digital sampling rate should be at least 4x the frequency you are trying to measure.. A constant level signal source, with variable frequency should be good to test the bandwidth.. usually BW is defined as the 3dB point, or where your signal drops to half the actual value.. If you find anything interesting with your scopes.. let me know... I love to hear what you find out.. thanks!!

    Few days ago, I spent $100 for a tiny tablet scope with 7" touch screen and 100 MHz bandwidth, 1GSs.
    The benefit is it can save my limited table space and quickly to check if the signals exist or not when I do simple repairs.
    Of course when I need to get detailed waveform then I shall use 1GHz, 5GSs heavy machine.

    Did you change the probe and the scope setting to 10X when measuring high frequencies?
    I don't have the scope yet, but out of other videos and the manual it looks like 1X is only to be used for frequencies

      Yep, 1x/10x probes rarely have >5MHz bandwidth in 1x mode. There was a great explanation of why on EEVBlog a long time back.

    I had about the same results. Mine went to 25 mHz before it crapped out. BTW, the instructions say you need to be in the X10 Range to measure up to 100 mhz. But the sensitivity drops in the X10 Range, so I still wasn't able to measure to anything past 25 mHz. KG7M

      Yes bandwidth is typically measure at the 3 db point.. so any way you look at it.. it is not what they claim! But it is cheap!

      @@jaynesnetwork Thank you for the review. It works just great for my needs. I'm mostly using it for Audio and Low Frequency RF. I moved into a small 1 bdrm Apt after retirement, so my HUGE HP 'Scope is in Storage. It would be nice if it went to 100 mhz for alignment of those receivers that use a conversion scheme in the 45 - 75 mHz range. But it's good for tracing Audio in Transmitter and Receiver circuits, eliminating noisy components in old tube amps, and Alignment of Receivers using 455 kHz or 10.7 mHz IFs. I'm enjoying it for what it is. Thanks again for taking time to review it. KG7M

    Compañero, buenos días...Por un casual no habrá tenido algún problema con él.....El caso, es que tengo el mismo modelo que lo habré utilizado un para de veces para ver una señal de baja frecuencia....El caso, es que al ponerlo en funcionamiento, la pantalla me arroja unos valores erróneos sin tener nada conectado....Al intentar calibrarlo, me arroja FALLO en la Calibración...He intentado en multitud de ocasiones que me presten ayuda el Fabricante, pero ha sido inútil....¿sabría cuál es el problema que presenta?...Un saludo cordial desde Las Islas Canarias....

    I just want to measure some Vpp from video outputs signals. Do you think this device will work for me?

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably depends on what kind of video signal you are trying to measure.. the old composite video signal had a bandwidth of about 3 MHz.. This scope should be able to measure that signal fine.. but TV broadcast signals have carrier frequencies of 88MHz to over 800MHz for UHF.. these frequencies are definitely too high for this scope to see..

    Why didn't you compare this little scope to your bench scope? You should have hooked them simultaneously so that you could compare the little scope to the bench scope and then you would know whether your signal generator output was falling off or it was the little scope unable to keep up.

      Yes you are right! I will do that next time! I can't test this one any more.. because I already burnt it out! I ordered a different one after that.. I got a DSO 112A.. I might but another yellow on in the future.. I did like it a lot.. until I burnt it out!

    Hi, sorry to be a bit blunt but I wouldn't call this 'extensive testing', and I can't believe you saying 'it is not bad for what it is'!! For all we can see, it is so bad it can't even display a proper square wave at 6 Mhz, so it is just utter crap. And you should at least have carried out a test to see if it was even able to correctly recognize a square wave at a lower frequency, say 1 MHz, or 100 kHz or lower... And as someone remarked before, you should of course have set the probe to 10x to test a 6 MHz signal, although I doubt it would do much of a difference here, as even at 6 MHz it 1X mdoe the signal should look about square and not a pure sine as it looks here!

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I seems the video was useful to you!.. From the Extensive testing I conducted, you were easily able to determine that this particular scope was not a good fit for your applications.. For what I have been using it for, the bandwidth is acceptable.. So to me, it is not too bad... but since I showed the testing that I did the scopes actual capability, this allowed you to draw your own conclusion, based on your own applications! Glad to be of service! Thank you!

      You need to understand, this device is one of the cheapest little scopes on the market. Do you really believe that it is capable of 100Mhz or even 40Mhz? No way, not in real world. This device is useful for hobbyists, repairing some audio equipment, to check if the signal is there ot not, or at car repair, to check crankshaft sensor, ignition coils, etc. Basic things where you don't need very high accuracy and very wide range. And you don't need mains cable, fits into your pocket, very handy device on the field. For this purpose it is a really nice device, and no need to buy super accurate scope for a lot of $$$.
      The chinese advertising is a different story, the 100Mhz is like 5000W P.M.P.O. by those Aliexpress amplifiers and speakers... Take it with a grain of salt.
      Watch reviews about this device and if it's real capabilities are enough for you, why not to buy?

      I have seen different videos - first, they had to calibrate the probe, which they did not do, and second, they had to set the range of the device to 10X, but in total it should not respond at 25 to 30 MHz. The lack of comparison between the two oscilloscopes also leads us to think that the wave generator is badly work.

No Dissenting opinions are "allowed", any more.. in this "free" country we live in... I just though the good people of the world deserved to know the truth.. You are right.. In a perfect world.. I would make separate videos.. to talk about different topics.. but this is not allowed anymore on the internet... TO PUT IT BLUNTLY.. THERE IS NO MORE FREEDOM OF SPEECH... AND SOON ALL OTHER HUMAN RIGHT WILL FALL! If I was smart... I would keep my mouth shut... but I am not... because, my heart compels me to try to warn the decent people of the world, by putting my own neck on the line.. Don't worry.. TY is already punishing me, for what I have said.. They do it in sneaky and underhanded ways.. so the public does not notice.. but since I am perched at a different vantage point.. And can see things that the general public cannot.. Everything is much more clear to ME!!... I guess I was mistaken... in assuming.. that others might appreciate hearing this VERY IMPORTANT information!??? Thank you for your great comments.. I will consider doing as you suggest.. Since most people don't want to be saved anyway.. and I can probably make more money, by not bucking their rotten agenda!!??? Sailing will be smoother, and MUCH more lucrative.. if I just stop rocking the boat!!
