- NBA Hall of Famer and NBA champion Rick Barry is blown away that players like Shaq, DeAndre Jordan, Dwight Howard wouldn't attempt the underhand free throw. Plus, talks about the respect he has for Kobe Bryant.

He had to sit out a season on a contract issue. He was hired to do announcing on national TV, so he’s had a lot of experience speaking.
Rick is the best basketball commentator I've ever heard. He's articulate, passionate about basketball, and has deep knowledge of the game.

People always talk about Barry's free throw style but todays fans need to understand what a great player he was. He was the rookie of the year and all NBA his first year, his second year he averaged 35 points a game, he averaged 30 a game during his career in the ABA, and averaged 30 a game and led the Warriors to the chip after he came back to the NBA. On that title team the "Miami Greyhound" was the only all star. Barry is also one of the greatest passing forwards of all time, right up there with Bird and Lebron. It was highway robbery that he didn't get the MVP after his title run, that's how good he was, but the players voted that year and Barry was not popular at all. They gave the award to Kareem whose Laker team came in last that year. Barry is an all-time great and oh, he also shot 90% from the line for his career.

Wilt Chamberlain said that was one of his regrets of not staying with the underhand FT. People probability don't remember that Wilt shot underhand during his 50 points per game season 1961-62 and that is also why he scored 100 points. Wilt was 28-for-32 from the foul line that 100 point game. Wilt had his highest FT at 61.5% that season compared to a career number of 51.1%. If you check that years games you could see that Wilt would have shot close to 70-75% for his career if he stuck with it.

Unless you have Shaq I can't see a team winning a championship with a big man that can't make free throws. He mentioned andre iguodala, who is a pretty good freethrow shooter in percentage at about 60% but he's not a liability every game like deandre, howard, and josh smith are. It really looks like these guys don't work on their freethrows in offseason, and we will see teams use the hack a shaq throughout the season smh
actually Jordan and deandre constantly practice free throws. It is their technique and mental strength in games that are questionable. Also there have been PLENTY of bigs with bad free throw shooting on championship teams.

If someone decided to use the underhand free throw, they would instantly increase their popularity as a player. Whether fans like it or not, they'll be more inclined to watch something different.
Shaq's not that much of a reliability at the end of a game, he makes them when you need it

I don't blame him. Barry is a legendary asshole and egomaniac, but he really cared about winning on a level that very, very few players do nowadays. He didn't give a shit what anyone thought - he just did what it took to give himself and his team the best chance of winning every night. And quite frankly, any player shooting less than 80% from the stripe who is unwilling to utilize a technique proven (in terms of physics) to be far more effective is not truly dedicated to winning.
hes just saying whats already been said and done, but with the utmost eloquence as a player who "found" a way to make it work. Hah, his point was more strong in the sense of his choice of words "anybody that isnt willing to do what it takes to get better" calling "them" the players that probably never really spent enough time in their entire life playing the game to apparently learn to make a freethrow in a professional level, from a player of his status hes basically saying "I never expected the game to be played like this or see the NBA turn in to this kind of game(an embarassment) even pointing out that they shouldnt even be playing hah. I knew after he started talking about the fact that "you play to win" he was going to say thats why he thinks kobe is a g because thats whats up.

Defense was his forte. He never was their primary scorer. Guys like Cousy, Sharman, Havlicek, Sanders, Jones, Nelson, Ramsey, Siegfried, Howell did much of the scoring. Russell was the defensive anchor and team leader, while the rest did the scoring for him. He's also fortunate ALL the guys I mentioned were 80%+ FT shooters.

@@ericruiz1036 that's true, but I think Barry is more trying to say that anyone making fun of you at that point can't be taken seriously. If you look corny out there and you're losing, then maybe they have a point when they rip on you. If you look corny out there, but you're draining 90+% of your FTs and have the best % in the league, then who cares what anyone thinks? At that point the people insulting you are the ones who look silly, for ripping on someone who did whatever it took to try and win.
People compare Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan... But he actually compares more similarly to Rick Barry. Completely confident... With the ability to score from anywhere on the floor. But difficult to get along with and poor shot selection. They score with Jordan's volume. But Kobe and Barry could get tunnel vision and become inefficient.
Jordan was a consistent machine... And a jerk. Kobe and Rick Barry were inefficient jerks.

A number of years back I saw game footage where Rick Barry shakes a defender with pivot work at shooting range, the same move Kobe Bryant did many times in his later career. I know Kobe studied game film and would have had access to all the best and I'm convinced some of his moves were Rick Barry inspired.

@@jeffw1267 Not even close. Shaq couldn't shoot 3's. All he did was be a powerhouse(block, get inside and dunk, etc.). Jordan and James are all around players. Shaq is still one of my favorite players of all time though.
