  • I made a pair of led cubes using wood and acrylic with rgb 5 volt leds that mean it can be powered from any computer usb port or 5 volt power bank. You can daisy chain any number together and have them all remotely controlled.

    Glad to see the smile and the passion continue even through the tough times.. Keep up the great creative work. I love they way you document and show how to build these fantastic projects. Would you ever consider using reclaimed material for your projects? Re-purposing old items and using the material for a build?

    Very cool project. Design is SO often a problem in DIY projects. It's as if saving money is the only reason some people think justifies making something yourself. I like that you do an artistic job, even if it's for a so-called utilitarian project.
    KEEP IT UP, it's great!

    The author does like to from scratch, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

    Really beautiful work, Linn! A tip I just discovered watching drone video buildings: try to find some silicone wire. The difference from usual wire and silicone wire is that the silicone is that the isolation won't melt with the heat from the soldering iron! I'm already looking for some of those. :)

    This might make a neat nightlight in a nursery! When my son was small, he had a white Teddy Bear that had LEDs inside it, when you squeezed the paw, it would cycle thru the colors (it was as soft glow). He would fall to sleep a light easier with it. I think it was called a Glo-Bear.

    @04:12 You use regular USB connectors for powering the LED Light strips. When I will be building this project I will use a different type of connector.
    Because of the RGB, you have power on D+ and D- leads of the connector too, and this is outside of the USB specification. I would warn the users, do not plug regular USB devices into those connectors on the cubes, to avoid problems.

    To control the lights I would use an Arduino controller. It takes a little bit of programming, but there are a lot of people that have already done the programming for you. You just simply input the program into the Arduino controller and it's good to go. Nice project.

    Great project, keep it up.
    Just a few notes: perhaps one could use Super Glue in gel form?
    I would connect the second USB plug to the first USB plug where the power comes in and not at the end of the led strip, due to voltage drop... especially if one connects more of these in series... just my 5 cents. I hope you don’t mind,

    Only issue that I have are the cables which are visible through the acrylic. If you made a hole in the dowel you could use that as a channel for those cables or just wrap the strip around the cables.
    Cool use of USB cables. Probably one note here would be - make sure they are good quality, especially if you're planning on making more lights - the data cables (usually green and white) can be quite thinner than the power and ground ones so they may not be great for larger current.
    I build a similar project with large Ikea standing lamp but I'm using Wifi (and recently HomeKit) to control it. Even thought about making a video about it :) And when using micro controller there's also a possibility to use neopixels and make cool animations, something I have planned for one of my next projects.

    • @lasserasinen7174
      @lasserasinen7174 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LEDs in those strips are connected in parallel, so you don't actually have to connect cables on the other end of the strip. You can just split the incoming wires into two; one to the strip and one to the daisy-chain connector.
      As for cables, I've found old telephone cables and RJ11 connectors to be pretty neat for these kinds of projects. They're also dirt cheap 😃
