    Don't know if you know or not but when you solder, make sure you tin the tip. Rub the tip on a natural wet sponge, then apply solder on the tip to soak it up, then wipe it again. You have tinned the tip. Much easier to solder anything after. Nice tutorial by the way.

    You can use parchment paper to place your vynil properly. Use squeegee (or credit card) too to avoid bubbles.
    I think you can use black vynil too instead of painting. You can just buy the same design in black, but ask for the negative space since you’re not using the vynil as a template for painting. I can’t wait to try this project.

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea! Do you think black vinyl would block all the light or is it thin where you might get a little shining through?

    • @Maknaehae
      @Maknaehae 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never tried it on acrylic yet so I’m not really sure. Oracal 651 is thick so it might be ok.

    15:40 Another thing you can do to aide in light transfer and reflection/refraction in a project such as this one. The aluminum foil tape (or aluminum foil but that gets tricky as its hard to work with and tears when you look at it wrong) that heating and cooling guys use, can be cut down into strips to place as mirrors on the edges where you dont have leds. Not really needed in a smaller picture frame like this, but on one with a bigger throw, and you dont want to use strips on all 4 sides (difference in lighting aesthetic)

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to check out the aluminum foil tape? Is there a brand that you recommend?!

    • @crisnmaryfam7344
      @crisnmaryfam7344 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisMaherDIY For this application the amazon basic "amazon choice" or whatever brand works just fine. Dont have to worry about the heat of an LED melting it or its adhesive, like you might in HVAC work. Just a simple "HVAC tape" search will pull it up. Very similar to the aluminum foil type sheeting ive seen used in DIY infinity mirror builds. Just comes in a roll instead of just a certain size sheet and makes it easier to work with for smaller details like the edges of a acrylic sheet. Something like 7$ (usd) a roll for the 2 inch by 65 ft stuff.

    Hi Chris, cool project, the lights look great!
    A question: why did you use the vinyl as a template for the spraypaint and not just leave it as the final shape?
    For inversion? Or didn't it look so good?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! That's a good question! Doing it that way would for sure work but it would change the look a little bit. I never tried it that way so maybe it would have looked just as cool! I think it just depends on where you want the light to shine through. At least for the sunset/palm tree one I wanted only the sun to be lit up and wanted the palm trees to be dark. If I left the sticker on and didn't spray paint, the palm tree would be lit up as well as part of the sun and all of the space around the sun would be too. Now if I got avinyl sticker that was the opposite of what I used, that could possibly work and allow me to skip the spray paint step! Great question and makes me want to try it the other way now lol.

    I am always curious what the final --- final step looks. ie, when you hook things up and how you stash the chip and how and where you run the power wiring to a power supply for some of your excellent projects. It's probably easy, but some of the ways you implemented that could make it easier for others that maybe replicating some of your interesting ideas.
    Do you tape the controller chip into some of the projects and then extend the wiring to a power supply a few feet away? I just taped it on the back since I have it sitting on my desk and not hanging or up against a wall. Nothing fancy. If I wanted to actually hang it on a wall like a picture frame I would make the wood a little thicker so you could hide the controller behind and still have it flush with the wall.

      @@ChrisMaherDIY Hi Chris, great tutorial! If you want to tidy things up around the back without making the frame thicker, look at the small form factor D1 mini versions of the 8266 and solder the wires directly to the board without using pins and Dupont connectors. Also, I noticed you struggled a bit with the soldering. Wiping the copper contacts with a flux pen beforehand and tinning the tip of the soldering iron will help the solder flow better and more quickly. Heat is the enemy of those LED pixels so you need to get in and out as quickly as possible. There are plenty of online tutorials that will help you improve your soldering technique and I can also recommend the many cheap soldering practice kits on Amazon, Aliexpress and elsewhere.

    Question: what if I wanted a flame style in the background? Would I start with a white bottom led strip, then put flashing or chasing on the sides with different speeds? Have you done something like this?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a good idea! I have not but i honestly think you would build it exactly the same way. The LED lights are going to be brightest at the bottom and then dim a little as you go up. I think that would definitely look like a flame/fire. The WLED app also has a lot of customizing so i think you could easily find a setting to maybe have red and orange, or red and yellow flashing to create a sweet effect instead of just a static color.

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. What type of led strips are you using? I think I used ws2812b strips so make sure those are the ones selected in led preferences. Thanks for your response. In the app I have ws281x selected and the gnd is also going back to the power supply. I have tried a regular phone connector for power as well as a larger AC/dc adapter. I can see the wifi board on the WLED app and when I press power the blue light on the board turns on and off but none of the lights on the strip turn off. They lights are not communicating at all to the app just the blue light on the board. Not sure if that info gives you any new information as to why I only have a few lights on some dimmer and some brighter. Wish I could send a picture. Thanks for your help. You make this look so easy. I have used two separate wifi boards with the same issue. I have also tried jumper wires and the different connectors you used in other videos. I can’t seem to find any answers to this online. I wonder if it’s a bad set of lights?

    Instead of using vinyl you could use a Brother Scan N Cut to make templates/stencils from 12x12 card stock. Tape it down, spray paint it, let the paint dry, then remove the paper template/stencil. Much faster removal and no need to weed vinyl. Can't justify getting a scan n cut contact an Etsy seller who uses one to make the pattern for you. Or me, I have one that I make jigsaw puzzles with. 1,000 piece puzzles in the palm of your hand :)

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You certainly could do that! I'm not familiar with a brother scan n cut but if it can make templates from cardstock then it should work! you might be limited to the intricacy of the designs since the cardstock wont be sticky and if you have any free flowing pieces that are not connected, it might be hard to keep those in place while spray painting. In my second attempt at this project I make some detailed patterns that might be hard to do with the cardstock: th-cam.com/video/2q_zrEcbXHE/w-d-xo.html but for some simple designs that would for sure work and not require a fancy cutting machine or spending money on Etsy! The light is the brightest at the bottom and then gradually gets dimmer near the top. The sticky-ness you are experiencing here is from lack of flux. You can buy solder with a tiny bit of flux in it (flux core). It would help save you some time here, yes it would need wiped off afterword (despite many claiming being clean free) If you are like me, and cannot leave the flux mess behind, an alcohol wipe or tiny bit of IPA and a q tip will do perfectly. 12:16

    Just get p95 or p99 at 60 percent opacity and you don't have to sand anything
    Reverse weed the stencil and you won't have to paint or peel anything either

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the ideas! I love them both! If you reverse weed the vinyl sticker, do you think it would go on smooth with no bubbles and do you think it would block out all the light if I used the black color?

    • @fastsigns4825
      @fastsigns4825 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisMaherDIY absolutely on both counts. Just make sure you get a non glare acrylic, as mentioned the p95 or p99 and it will work perfectly. Make sure your workspace is clean and clear, that's about it.

      You can use normal glass but your probably going to have to sand it to create the frosted look. If its clear, i dont think it will have the same look! Thanks for watching and great question!

    Impressive result BUT, I suppose you have a cutting plotter to prepare graphics, so why do you use mask film and paint it? it's a double job. You can use matt black vinyl directly without painting.

      Thanks for watching and great advice! I dont have a cutter and was ordering everything off Etsy. I had zero experience with vinyl and didn't know if A. it would block out the light and B. if it could be applied easily with no bubbles. If i were to do it again and had a cutter i would for sure try doing things the way you mentioned as spray painting was not very fun, messy, and possibly an extra step that could be avoided! Thanks for the great feedback!

      If you don't sand it then the light will go right through since there is nothing for it to bounce off. Im not 100% sure if you need to sand both sides though.

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! I don't know what I would sell them for. Its just a hobby so I have never tried. But idk, i think if you were to try selling them, to even have it be worth your time I would say it would need to be around $100 dollars? Not sure if anyone would buy them at that price though but cost of materials would probably be around 35 dollars and my guess it would take about 3 hours to make 1. (maybe not that long but that's just an estimate)

    Good idea, why not use a flat black vinyl cut to avoid wasting time painting?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure something I would like to try! I've never worked with vinyl before and I didn't know if light could get through or if the vinyl would go on without any bubbles or imperfections. If i had a vinyl cutting machine, i would have definitely experimented with this but since i was ordering them off Etsy, i didn't want to risk it. In your experience, would a flat black vinyl sticker block out all the light where needed and do they generally go on with no bubbles or creases?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally I would for sure do it on the miter but my blade must not be aligned because the cuts were a little off and the boxes came together a little more snug on the table saw. I might just need a new blade.
