I'm so glad I found your video. I was given about 20 cuttings from my neighbors wandering Jew. She gave her huge mother plant a nice haircut. I wasn't sur what to do next. We retired early & moved down to Citrus County FL a yr ago. I now have time, plenty of time lol, to enjoy houseplants, gardening, outside work. I have fallen in love with it. My new serenity. I think as today is 12/31/21 I will put the rooted cuttings into several small-ish pots so they can grow well, I can prune them to get bushy. By spring I will be able to put them in larger hanging pots. Again, Thank You

It won’t grow outside here unless it’s only through summer as the frosts and cold kill it off. That’s why I grow out in the warm greenhouse. Once you start collecting them they become addictive. I'm here because my cat thought my baby Zebra made a nice midnight snack. I was gonna throw it away but your tips are making me think she did me a favor. It was looking a bit too spindly so hopefully it will grow back "bushier" now! 💚💜
I let it grow 5/6 inches and cut it and stick it in in the same pot . It looks bushy , grows back roots really easily and i notice it branching a alot frequently . Got it in a tinniest pot for a pound , now its thriving . I love it.
Yeah they're so easy to root aren't they? And once you've got one plant, you've got as many as you want as they're practically impossible to fail with cuttings. I'm glad you're enjoying yours!

I had a mother plant that started breaking limbs off - is that a sign it's underwatered? I propagated those limbs and they're doing super well now! I actually experimented with pruning the ends on my own and have seen new leafs starting lower down, just like you showed. Thanks for posting and affirming what I've been experimenting with!
Yeah, it could be under or over watering! Any signs of stress could mean any of several factors as the cause - be it watering, light, humidity, pathogen, temperature, the list goes on... I suppose that's the challenge in it and the satisfaction when it all goes right. I'm pleased to hear your propagations have 'struck' and your hard-pruning has worked. My plants that appeared to be mostly dead are now thriving again thanks to the hard-prune. All the best. 😀
Thank you now I know what im doing wring with the purple wandering jew i haven't been picking it at the top but they were breaking really easily when they start getting long and lost its vibrant color they would root easily and would look great for awhile and then just fall over and look long with no leaves towards the end in the soil so wasn't producing enough leaves . I also find all my plants love a diffuser around them without essential oil or natural like lavender they lift up and look happy when I leave it in and around the plants . Also the ceiling fan would help or window open with some breeze . Thank you for this information

I have the pink ones, they grow so well, and they have tiny white flowers in spring. I'm going to see if a cutting will survive outside in a hanging basket, I'm in Hampshire and the weather has been really good.
I'm sure it will, at least until the winter. I've heard of large, old specimens surviving frosty and snowy Greek winters, but I expect the combination of cold, dark and wet will kill yours come the autumn. But in the meantime, treat it like a bedding plant and I'm sure it'll thrive! 😄
@@shysie03 no it's never lost it's colour, it sits on the window sill and gets a lot of morning light, and not too much watering. Where do you keep yours, perhaps move it to a brighter location?
@@shysie03 If I can jump in here...it's also worth noting that the pink 'swirls' are only on new growth. So as the plant matures, those leaves will lose their pink. I might be stating the obvious here, but try pinching out the tips to encourage more new growth further back and you might find the pink returns in force. Good luck!

I absolutely 💯 want to thank you for an honest video on the Wondering Jew as most people won't tell you everything and I'm sitting back thinking 🤔? Anyway HERE is where I hope you can do a video( or direct me with a link if you did already and I didn't see it) where I can let my already potted Wondering Jew take root and wonder vertically strait into another pot. Like it would in the wild. I lack imagination and I have tried to learn for example just how much soil do I need for roots to grow? I saw in your video how you allowed the one plant to travel but I took note that there was no soil to take root. THATS what I want to do! PLEASE have you ever done that? Thank you Maribeth, I really appreciate those kind comments. If you have a Trad. wandering horizontally across a flat surface (as they would naturally scramble in the wild) then it's easy enough to peg one of the stems down at the point of a node into a pot or a tray. The media could be practically anything - they'll root providing there is moisture. I have been diagnosed with a life threatening disease myself and your absolutely correct. Priorities change! My plants and my cats are my saving grace outside of my family. So I plan on trying the bag but in the meantime I'm trying an experiment with my plant with allowing it to trail. I basically took a shallow pan and filled it with good quality soil and the plant is trailing into it. And I did pin it because it had grown upwards. ( thanks for that suggestion!) Thank you again. @@maribethhaczewski5819 Yeah that would work perfectly. They'll root at their 'elbows' - and you don't really need many of those 'touch-down' points to really give it a boost. Eventually the part growing upwards will also flop down and it will root again - and it that way they scramble along, rooting as they go. It's the best way to avoid the usual browning leaves you get when trailing from a hanging basket with only a single rooting point. Good luck!

But to be honest, if you find someone to help you set up an eBay account that would be preferable as they're so cheap on there for cuttings. All of my Tradescantia plants are from cuttings - you can pick them up for well under a fiver.

Glad it was helpful, Ayesha. It depends on which Tradescantia you've got. Some don't trail, but the ones in the video have a tendency to trail horizontally, rooting as they go, as they do in nature. At any point you can then hang them. Usually the weight will start to drag it down at about 20 to 30 cm in length. It won't be long as they grow very quickly. My trailing tradescantia has become very sparse during the winter and many leaves in between have turned brown so I only have beautiful fresh ends. Should I just trim those ends off at the node like you did? And then place in water until threw roots and then I plant those in the same pot to make it bushy?
I would trim off the fresh ends with the good leaves, as you've suggested, just below a leaf node, and plant straight into the pot. They root so easily there's no need to root first in water. Give them a week, then cut off all the straggly parts with no leaves, and you'll be good to go again. Good luck!
Yes you can do that - but usually when you do that you leave behind a very small part of the leaf which then grows into a leaf that look like it's been bitten off.
I want mine to start growing down, I took cuttings from my original one and planted them in a pot, but now it has grown outwards about 70 cm in diameter and the branches just won't grow downwards. Also there's significant colour difference between my cuttings and the mother plant. The mother plant is deep purple, while the gigantic cuttings pot the leaves are mostly green. How do I train it to start drooping the branches downwards please?
Hi Elise. You're not the first to pose this question to me. Firstly, Tradescantia zebrina will produce most colour in the highest light (not necessarily direct sunlight) and the greenest leaves in the lowest light. Secondly, they want to scramble horizontally over the ground - that's how they grow in the wild. I initially grow mine in that manner over a horizontal surface until the stems are long enough then I simply hang it up. The stems will never actually 'grow downwards' - they'll always turn up at the ends in an attempt to right themselves against gravity. But if you do I've suggested, then you should get a nice 'trailing plant' that appears to be growing downwards - even though it's just the weight of the stems hanging downwards. Exactly. That'll force it to grow side shoots. You can keep them bushy for as long as you want to, and yeah, every bit you pinch off will make a new plant - if you want more. 😀
What do you mean pinch it? Mine is currently growing really fast and doing great but growing straight up. I was going to cut a part off and let it root in water then repot it to make it fluffier
No they don't 'need' high humidity as they're semi-succulent, but I have one in a bathroom and it's doing OK. If it starts to go downhill it's likely lack of light that's the issue. There are loads of hybrids out there too, so it's best to look up care needs of the specific one you've got. I took a tradescantia from my Nan's house many years ago after she passed away. It was a beautiful variegated trailer which eventually broke apart from its own weight. It's hundreds of different plants now (I've given some away on Freecycle, and some people took cuttings for their exotic pet enclosures). I can't get any of them to trail like the original did. Do you have any advice for me please? I just have big, thick red-leaved plants on the kitchen window with no variegations at all!
Tradescantia naturally scramble over a horizontal surface - so that's the way to get them to trail. allow them to scramble first - then pick up and hang.
I watched your video again on making the purple one bushy. I trimmed mine but I'm worried that the ends will just be stubs as this happened before. s new stem grew but didn't end up as bushy. do you pull the end leaf off to make more leaves grow on one stem? I know if you pull a leaf another stem will grow and I don't want that I just want leaves all down one stem like what you have.

I am having a great deal of luck growing them and creating new plants but they don't trail - they are standing straight up like almost 1 ft straight up, how do I get them to bend over and trail without breaking them?
@@dawngrosstueck5262 ok well it will flop over eventually just through its own weight. I’d create air movement around it and give it a wiggle every time you walk past. That should do it.
Try this, Catherine. They want to creep horizontally. Let them do this along a surface, then when they're looking long enough, you can move it to its final trailing position. Good luck!
This video tells you how to make it bushy. Just keep doing what it tells you. Watering depends on whether it needs it. If the soil is dry, then water it. If it's still wet, then don't. Hope that helps. 😁
I’m 100% certain it’s a single plant. Search on Etsy and you’ll find many plants for sale by that name that look identical to mine. This is a named cultivar that’s listed on the RHS website.

Sounds like the Zebrina. It's really impossible for me to say what's wrong as I don't know the conditions you're keeping it in. If it's in the house, do you have it in a bright place, away from heaters? When do you water it? If you can tell me a few more details I might have some suggestions. 😀
Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees I had it in a semi dark corner in my living room. For 3 days I gave it humidity but it still isn’t showing signs of being happy. And yes it’s the zebrina one, I now am only watering when the soil feels dry
Thanks Ashley - I would say the priority is more light. And you're doing the right thing with the watering - let it dry out, then water till it runs through - but don't leave it sitting in a pot of water. I would only try with increasing humidity once you've managed to improve the light conditions. I hope that helps - and good luck!
My wondering jew is doing well and has been growing quite bushy. My plant's leaves look a bit dull and not the deep green that it was when I got it (it was much smaller). Any ideas? I water the plants well, but I suspect the environment is a bit too dry. Any suggestions?
Practically all tender Tradescantia look better with their younger leaves in my experience. As they're evergreen, the older leaves will all lose their luster over time, and eventually crisp up and fall off - there's no getting away from that. All you can do is either take some cuttings and start new ones off, or continually prune yours back to encourage the younger, more colourful leaves. Hope that helps a bit!
Thanks - no I don't actually have one on me demonstrating it. It's really simple though. Just take a cutting from below a leaf-node, stick it in water, or compost - I prefer to use vermiculite but all will work. It should take about a week and you'll have roots. Good luck!
I've tried rooting those white cream cuttings with no chlorophyll and they would always die sooner or later without any sign of development, so no point :)
@@Grow_Up_Man55 I think of them as parasites so I leave only few of them on the plant so they can just sit there and look pretty but prune any new ones mercilessly if they start to outnumber the green/variegated parts so they dont become a burden for the plant. By the way, I love your green house! I don't have any outdoor area, I live in an apartment building, so I'm always admiring other people's gardens :)
Thanks Mila, I'm glad you like it. It costs a lot to run it, and it challenges me daily with extremes of climatic conditions, but I wouldn't be without it.
Just do what it says in the video - i.e. pinch out the growing tips. That will stimulate growth further down and also from the base under the soil. Another tip is to use your 'pinched out' sections - and just stick them back in the pot. They'll root in time and you'll have more stems there too. Good luck!
It doesn’t matter. Any amount will stop the tip growth. Just take it back to whatever looks good to you but I would take it to just above a pair of leaves.

They don't ever grow downwards - they'll always try to turn up at the ends. Naturally they grow horizontally, so the thing to do is try trailing across a horizontal surface until they reach the desired length, then hang them. If they're growing upright, eventually they should hang over rather than snapping off - that's what mine have always done. Hope that helps. 😬 (I'm talking mainly about Trad. Zebrina and Red Jewel here.)

My Zebrina is over two feet tall growing completely vertical! It keeps getting bigger and bigger with no sign of stopping 😂 I keep hearing it’ll naturally start to go down but the stems are super thick and healthy and I can’t imagine they’ll just gracefully lower themselves without snapping. Hi.im trying to overwinter a dipledinia plant indoors now..i removed it from the pot that it was in outside during the summer and repotted it in fresh new soil to overwinter indoors..but the leaves are turning yellow ..i really don't want it to die ..i checked the soil to see if it was dry but it wasn't.. do you have any tips or suggestions on what's happening to this plant..thank you
Hmm - curious one that. I'd definitely let the soil dry out for a few days before watering again. It could just be the shock of the move, especially if light levels and temps are very different to outside. I don't know what your outdoor environment is like, but indoors you're likely to have higher temps (which they love) but low humidity - which they don't love so much, and possibly much lower light levels. I'd prune it down to about a foot, possibly use the prunings to take some cuttings for insurance (I have a video on that somewhere), stand it on a tray with stones and add some water to the tray (make sure the pot isn't touching the water) just to increase the humidity a bit, and don't water until it's dried out. Then it's just a waiting game...
That depends where you live. If you're in the UK then it'll grow as a 'bedding' plant through summer but is unlikely to survive a winter in the majority of areas as it can't take frost.
@@ameenalbaghdadi6209 OK so fairly similar climate. They can survive frost if they're a big enough, well established plant but the top growth would die off. They manage outside in places like Greece and they get the occasional frost, but obviously there are significant climate differences to us. The fact that Tradescantia hasn't spread to the wild in the UK tells you it won't cope with this kind of climate for any length of time. (There are herbaceous, non-tropical varieties that do manage perfectly well.)
Yeah they can do! If you wait long enough, eventually they'll get top-heavy and flop over, then start to trail. Or you can always pinch out the growing tip, to encourage branching side shoots that will be pointing in the right direction. Either way, eventually, it'll trail. Good luck!

We use them in landscapes as ground covers down here in Tampa. We also have a wild species native here.

@@shysie03 no it's never lost it's colour, it sits on the window sill and gets a lot of morning light, and not too much watering. Where do you keep yours, perhaps move it to a brighter location?

@@shysie03 If I can jump in here...it's also worth noting that the pink 'swirls' are only on new growth. So as the plant matures, those leaves will lose their pink. I might be stating the obvious here, but try pinching out the tips to encourage more new growth further back and you might find the pink returns in force. Good luck!

Anyway HERE is where I hope you can do a video( or direct me with a link if you did already and I didn't see it) where I can let my already potted Wondering Jew take root and wonder vertically strait into another pot. Like it would in the wild. I lack imagination and I have tried to learn for example just how much soil do I need for roots to grow? I saw in your video how you allowed the one plant to travel but I took note that there was no soil to take root. THATS what I want to do!

If you have a Trad. wandering horizontally across a flat surface (as they would naturally scramble in the wild) then it's easy enough to peg one of the stems down at the point of a node into a pot or a tray. The media could be practically anything - they'll root providing there is moisture. I want to say before I go on that your in my prayers and that your health improves. I have been diagnosed with a life threatening disease myself and your absolutely correct. Priorities change! My plants and my cats are my saving grace outside of my family.
So I plan on trying the bag but in the meantime I'm trying an experiment with my plant with allowing it to trail. I basically took a shallow pan and filled it with good quality soil and the plant is trailing into it. And I did pin it because it had grown upwards. ( thanks for that suggestion!)

@@maribethhaczewski5819 Yeah that would work perfectly. They'll root at their 'elbows' - and you don't really need many of those 'touch-down' points to really give it a boost. Eventually the part growing upwards will also flop down and it will root again - and it that way they scramble along, rooting as they go. It's the best way to avoid the usual browning leaves you get when trailing from a hanging basket with only a single rooting point. Good luck!

But to be honest, if you find someone to help you set up an eBay account that would be preferable as they're so cheap on there for cuttings. All of my Tradescantia plants are from cuttings - you can pick them up for well under a fiver.

Thank you so much for your video! I recently got a cutting, it rooted in water and now I put it in a small container of soil. Right now it's just growing tall and up, I would like it to trail. How long does it take for it to start trailing down?
Glad it was helpful, Ayesha. It depends on which Tradescantia you've got. Some don't trail, but the ones in the video have a tendency to trail horizontally, rooting as they go, as they do in nature. At any point you can then hang them. Usually the weight will start to drag it down at about 20 to 30 cm in length. It won't be long as they grow very quickly. My trailing tradescantia has become very sparse during the winter and many leaves in between have turned brown so I only have beautiful fresh ends. Should I just trim those ends off at the node like you did? And then place in water until threw roots and then I plant those in the same pot to make it bushy?
I would trim off the fresh ends with the good leaves, as you've suggested, just below a leaf node, and plant straight into the pot. They root so easily there's no need to root first in water. Give them a week, then cut off all the straggly parts with no leaves, and you'll be good to go again. Good luck!

Can you just pluck out the new leaf at the center and get the same results to make it bushy? By grabbing just the little new leaf and pulling it out?
Yes you can do that - but usually when you do that you leave behind a very small part of the leaf which then grows into a leaf that look like it's been bitten off.
I want mine to start growing down, I took cuttings from my original one and planted them in a pot, but now it has grown outwards about 70 cm in diameter and the branches just won't grow downwards. Also there's significant colour difference between my cuttings and the mother plant. The mother plant is deep purple, while the gigantic cuttings pot the leaves are mostly green. How do I train it to start drooping the branches downwards please?
Hi Elise. You're not the first to pose this question to me. Firstly, Tradescantia zebrina will produce most colour in the highest light (not necessarily direct sunlight) and the greenest leaves in the lowest light. Secondly, they want to scramble horizontally over the ground - that's how they grow in the wild. I initially grow mine in that manner over a horizontal surface until the stems are long enough then I simply hang it up. The stems will never actually 'grow downwards' - they'll always turn up at the ends in an attempt to right themselves against gravity. But if you do I've suggested, then you should get a nice 'trailing plant' that appears to be growing downwards - even though it's just the weight of the stems hanging downwards. Exactly. That'll force it to grow side shoots. You can keep them bushy for as long as you want to, and yeah, every bit you pinch off will make a new plant - if you want more. 😀

No they don't 'need' high humidity as they're semi-succulent, but I have one in a bathroom and it's doing OK. If it starts to go downhill it's likely lack of light that's the issue. There are loads of hybrids out there too, so it's best to look up care needs of the specific one you've got. I took a tradescantia from my Nan's house many years ago after she passed away. It was a beautiful variegated trailer which eventually broke apart from its own weight. It's hundreds of different plants now (I've given some away on Freecycle, and some people took cuttings for their exotic pet enclosures).
I can't get any of them to trail like the original did. Do you have any advice for me please? I just have big, thick red-leaved plants on the kitchen window with no variegations at all!
Tradescantia naturally scramble over a horizontal surface - so that's the way to get them to trail. allow them to scramble first - then pick up and hang.
I watched your video again on making the purple one bushy. I trimmed mine but I'm worried that the ends will just be stubs as this happened before. s new stem grew but didn't end up as bushy. do you pull the end leaf off to make more leaves grow on one stem? I know if you pull a leaf another stem will grow and I don't want that I just want leaves all down one stem like what you have.

I am having a great deal of luck growing them and creating new plants but they don't trail - they are standing straight up like almost 1 ft straight up, how do I get them to bend over and trail without breaking them?
Grow them horizontally first then pick them up and hang. I’ve never seen trad. zebrina growing vertically. Is that what yours is?
Yes that is what it is but I transplanted in very rich soil.

Try this, Catherine. They want to creep horizontally. Let them do this along a surface, then when they're looking long enough, you can move it to its final trailing position. Good luck!

I’m 100% certain it’s a single plant. Search on Etsy and you’ll find many plants for sale by that name that look identical to mine. This is a named cultivar that’s listed on the RHS website.

Sounds like the Zebrina. It's really impossible for me to say what's wrong as I don't know the conditions you're keeping it in. If it's in the house, do you have it in a bright place, away from heaters? When do you water it? If you can tell me a few more details I might have some suggestions. 😀
Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees I had it in a semi dark corner in my living room. For 3 days I gave it humidity but it still isn’t showing signs of being happy. And yes it’s the zebrina one, I now am only watering when the soil feels dry
Thanks Ashley - I would say the priority is more light. And you're doing the right thing with the watering - let it dry out, then water till it runs through - but don't leave it sitting in a pot of water. I would only try with increasing humidity once you've managed to improve the light conditions. I hope that helps - and good luck!
My wondering jew is doing well and has been growing quite bushy. My plant's leaves look a bit dull and not the deep green that it was when I got it (it was much smaller). Any ideas? I water the plants well, but I suspect the environment is a bit too dry. Any suggestions?
Practically all tender Tradescantia look better with their younger leaves in my experience. As they're evergreen, the older leaves will all lose their luster over time, and eventually crisp up and fall off - there's no getting away from that. All you can do is either take some cuttings and start new ones off, or continually prune yours back to encourage the younger, more colourful leaves. Hope that helps a bit!
Get a light on it that is blue. The blue spectrum of a grow light
Try a half teaspoon of Epsom salt to follow the directions on the bag of Epsom salt

Thanks - no I don't actually have one on me demonstrating it. It's really simple though. Just take a cutting from below a leaf-node, stick it in water, or compost - I prefer to use vermiculite but all will work. It should take about a week and you'll have roots. Good luck!
I've tried rooting those white cream cuttings with no chlorophyll and they would always die sooner or later without any sign of development, so no point :)
That would make sense I suppose. Although they seem to live quite happily on the plants alongside the other leaves. I still haven't tried it yet...
@@Grow_Up_Man55 I think of them as parasites so I leave only few of them on the plant so they can just sit there and look pretty but prune any new ones mercilessly if they start to outnumber the green/variegated parts so they dont become a burden for the plant. By the way, I love your green house! I don't have any outdoor area, I live in an apartment building, so I'm always admiring other people's gardens :)

I've got a tradescanthia nanouk. How do I get more stems from it? they're getting long and look great but there are still only three stems.
Just do what it says in the video - i.e. pinch out the growing tips. That will stimulate growth further down and also from the base under the soil. Another tip is to use your 'pinched out' sections - and just stick them back in the pot. They'll root in time and you'll have more stems there too. Good luck!

It doesn’t matter. Any amount will stop the tip growth. Just take it back to whatever looks good to you but I would take it to just above a pair of leaves.

They don't ever grow downwards - they'll always try to turn up at the ends. Naturally they grow horizontally, so the thing to do is try trailing across a horizontal surface until they reach the desired length, then hang them. If they're growing upright, eventually they should hang over rather than snapping off - that's what mine have always done. Hope that helps. 😬 (I'm talking mainly about Trad. Zebrina and Red Jewel here.)

My Zebrina is over two feet tall growing completely vertical! It keeps getting bigger and bigger with no sign of stopping 😂 I keep hearing it’ll naturally start to go down but the stems are super thick and healthy and I can’t imagine they’ll just gracefully lower themselves without snapping. It’s very frustrating lol
Hi.im trying to overwinter a dipledinia plant indoors now..i removed it from the pot that it was in outside during the summer and repotted it in fresh new soil to overwinter indoors..but the leaves are turning yellow ..i really don't want it to die ..i checked the soil to see if it was dry but it wasn't.. do you have any tips or suggestions on what's happening to this plant..thank you
Hmm - curious one that. I'd definitely let the soil dry out for a few days before watering again. It could just be the shock of the move, especially if light levels and temps are very different to outside. I don't know what your outdoor environment is like, but indoors you're likely to have higher temps (which they love) but low humidity - which they don't love so much, and possibly much lower light levels. I'd prune it down to about a foot, possibly use the prunings to take some cuttings for insurance (I have a video on that somewhere), stand it on a tray with stones and add some water to the tray (make sure the pot isn't touching the water) just to increase the humidity a bit, and don't water until it's dried out. Then it's just a waiting game...

Broken stems won't harm the plant - just take the tips and plant them back in the pot (if there's space) - they'll root in no time.😀

That depends where you live. If you're in the UK then it'll grow as a 'bedding' plant through summer but is unlikely to survive a winter in the majority of areas as it can't take frost.

@@ameenalbaghdadi6209 OK so fairly similar climate. They can survive frost if they're a big enough, well established plant but the top growth would die off. They manage outside in places like Greece and they get the occasional frost, but obviously there are significant climate differences to us. The fact that Tradescantia hasn't spread to the wild in the UK tells you it won't cope with this kind of climate for any length of time. (There are herbaceous, non-tropical varieties that do manage perfectly well.)

Yeah they can do! If you wait long enough, eventually they'll get top-heavy and flop over, then start to trail. Or you can always pinch out the growing tip, to encourage branching side shoots that will be pointing in the right direction. Either way, eventually, it'll trail. Good luck!
