Many treatment professionals are critical of 12 step programs and describe them as cultish and anachronistic. Generally those people get paid to treat addicts and so are in a competitive relationship with 12 step programs which are basically free and voluntary.
Many people have been achieving and maintaining long term sobriety in the AA since 1920s I believe. Later many programs have copied the 12 step method because of AA s' successes. As a recovered addict of many years I highly recommend it but it's not for everyone. The only way I Know to investigate it is to attend open meetings and/or buy an AA big book that explains the philosophy and methods very well and fairly comprehensively.
Of course it works, ridiculous question. It's time tested. It's not for everyone, and that's ok. People need another option instead of being pumped full of anti depressants.
absolute contempt - due to the lead in question asking if AA works. Been saving lives since the 1930's. It works like nothing else and creates lifetime friendships. And still, it's not for everyone.
@ you typed your comment after listening for two minutes. Your contempt is childish and unearned no matter how you justify it. You don’t follow the very principles you so zealously defend.
Nice debate. Good points on both sides. AA absolutely works, but the rooms are not perfect. No two rooms are the same. The book and steps are very well written, but sometimes that gets lost in a toxic meeting hall. Sadly they do exist. If you find a solid group, that has the message in mind first you will succeed if you want it. But they can’t force you to do it. No shame or judgement has ever been applied in any meetings I’ve attended.
Adi, you have not answered the question of what could replace AA because at this time there isn’t one. AA’s model legacy is universal, tax payer funded & of course fallible, just like all publicly funded systems. As soon as we speak of alternatives to AA, for example: specialized clinical treatments or, say, sobriety retreats, alternatives will cease to be universal & only affordable to more affluent folks with substance misuse issues. Substance Misuse & Addictions is still such an immense problem & I believe AA’s credit should be preserved. New alternatives - especially clinical - should work in partnership with AA because it has been working for, not all but some folks for 90+ years. I was also hoping to hear more about Narcotics Anonymous but perhaps for another debate. Thank you, I really enjoyed the discussion. Best, Jimmy James Murray
AA is one of our most perfect creations as a society. People helping people helping themselves helping others. We need an AA for everything because the United States has many addictions right now, and they need help healing and becoming whole. The system has capitalized and privitaized one of the major things that could help us and turned it into a cash cow, not only meant to suck the last dimes out of our pocket at our most vulnerable time, but also to create a system that intentionally gets us sick.
12 step programs have had much success but rating substance abuse treatment is extremely difficult. 12 step programs are not the best primary treatment for opioids where some patients need opioid replacement to improve the probability of sustainable sobriety.
Thanks for the breakdown! I have a quick question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
I just started watching these, they're amazing. I am starting this episode, but want to say off the bat, the opening guy's staement, Dan Griffin, was amazing in terms of removing all the teeth from the debate as given. I think both have good points, so it shows that truth is always multisided, but as a debater, this was a killer move to remove all your oponents teeth from the start, and then counter punching.
A A is the queue to madness Forgetting it is the best option without the stories no child or anyone should hear Listening to your heart is the answer not sitting in madhouses

Contempt before examination… the lecture isn’t even 5 minutes in yet and the contrary speaker hasn’t even had a moment to speak.

12 step programs are not researched stringently because of the anonymous nature of the programs.
