Can someone please help me here, (how this question is answered will give a clear indication of whether we're ready or not to conquer world football) How come that every "skillful/showboating" player ended up NOWHERE in their soccer careers, every single one...ENDED up NO-WHERE, you can name them all (including names captioned on this videos tittle.) Soccer/Football is the easiest sport compared to most sporting codes, you take the ball and you put it in opposition's net more times than they do in yours then after 90min the one with the highest count wins. Not the one with most shibobos and tsamayas(but GOALS) ...that shit counts for NOTHING, but for some odd reason the former seems to be the hallmark of our game. Someone please help my ignorance...what's the deal here?
Let me answer this to the best of my knowledge. The primary goal of football is to create chances and score goals. At a professional level, it is also important to entertain the fans, build and sell a brand, and generate revenue. Although individuals like Zongo go about it the incorrect route, they are a necessary part to the secondary goal of professional clubs. In Europe we see players with these 5 start skill moves (flair), that also have a knack to open up defences with unorthodox moves, thus creating and scoring goals. Players like Neymar, Zaha, Sancho, Quaresma etc. In SA we get it wrong mainly with not accepting that these players have a gift (in dribbling), and two touches of the ball suppresses their talent, and secondly we fail to nurture these players and shape them into dangerous weapons that can be used to destabilize opposition teams. Having played against guys like Zongo, I can attest first-hand that these showboat skills kills moral, disorientates organized defences and fatigues the opposition team. To sum it all up, we have underutilized these sorts of players and its our lack of understanding of the beautiful game that is to blame. In teams like Barca and Pep Guardiola teams, style of play and winning are of equivalent importance. They don't just want to win, they want to win whilst playing a certain way.
