you know there are many videos about European armor, Roman armor... Chain mail and stuff.. but this is my first Video i see from Chinese Armor, Thank you for sharing. Learning without thinking is vain; thinking without learning is dangerous.
Friend of mine in the SCA has been helping a group from China with their kits. I'm really digging the look, I might start working on one along side my 15th century European harness!
I really like the helmet especially the aventail I plan on putting a norse helm together and I wanted to find something that can protect your neck better than chainmail. I think I'll have the lamellar aventail but put on the front front to make it easier to breath all while still being heavily protected.
historical depictions seem to cover the front, including early ones upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0d/Officer_of_the_Guard_of_Honour._Tomb_of_Princess_Changle_%28%E9%95%BF%E4%B9%90%E5%85%AC%E4%B8%BB%E5%A2%93%29%2C_Zhao_Mausoleum%2C_Shaanxi_province._Tang_Zhenguan_year_17%2C_ie_644_CE.jpg
Very nice video but calling it "ancient Chinese armour" is too generalised. Considering the various imperial dynasties throughout China's history all had distinctively different types and styles of armour. This set of armour looks to be of the Song dynasty 10th century - 14th century
How are the chest and back sections shaped and rigid like that? It seems like they have some heft to them, like they have a metal plate backing to them or something.
The shape is not history accurate. This team is trying to mock Plate armour. They should mention it. How to make it accurate? We still need wait for archaeological finds from some tomb。
The structure comes from the geometry of the small individual pieces and the linkage method. Depends on various adjustment, they can be as fluid as scale armor to as rigid as plate. There are lots of artworks depicting such armor, there is at least 1 instance of diagram of those individual plate. However there is no archeological evidence of such armor exist. Logically I do not think such armor exist, as the most advance armor employed even by the emperor is brigandine of some sort with comparatively small plate.
I wonder how more more moblity you get in Chinese Armor v.s. Western plate. Or if they can close. Either way Fei Chango Hao! Xie Xie for the demonstration
They have about the same mobility personally, but lamellar chinese armor have the advantage of better heat control and ability to draw the bow and wider arm movements.

More like 30%. the actual pieces seems right. But the way they are attached are mostly wrong. At the very least, the spring hooks were not used at the period. Also the beast heads were used to over the gap between the shoulder and the upper arm, which was not done here. There are still bits and pieces wrong. But overall, a good attempt at historical restoration.
@@lolfang5725 it depends on the armor but not really... The thing is European armor weight was better distribute around the body better most of it concentrated in the core part of the human body so actually feels lighter even if it is heavier. This is why knights as well as men-at-arms can fight on Horseback or on foot with no problem. Even so plate armor was over all lighter then most other types of armor with the same coverage because they did a better job in utilizing the mass of the steel for the coverage as it was heavily shaped to the Human body.
@@skatetrooper5285 This. The mobility difference weight distribution makes is huge - just compare early samurai armor (a bit more comparable to this) with late samurai armor (much more similar to European plate) and it's night and day. Though to be fair that's several centuries worth of advancement so better performance is to be expected.
That's really the point. If one part is damaged, then it can be easily and cheaply fixed unlike big pieces of armor. Even then it can give very good protection.

wait? are those snap hook you use to attach the amour pieces to the chest plate? are they historical authentic or a modern add-on
they probably used to tie it before
In ancient times, ropes such as cow tendon ropes were used to tie, which is a simplified modern version
So the waist is actually not covered by armour, between the chest and the thighs.
