    You’re going to love Sherlock Holmes. I think it’s just up your street. It has wonderful characterizations and fun mysteries. The description of London is so atmospheric - makes Dickens London come to life.

    The Master and Margarita!!! My favorite Russian novel, I'm sure you will love it! It's a perfect book to read around Halloween.
    There is also a Russian mini-series that you can find on here with subtitles that I remember watching as a kid and it is amazing.

    Quite a tbr mountain to summit. Do not forget that above 26000 feet (8000m) there is the death zone. Requires surplus oxygen and speedy reading. Me too like to devour literary snacks like Gogol's short stories, Steinbeck's short novels, Orwell's essays and greetings from the kitchen (ie. haphazard sentences from the random books). Surprisingly on my bedside table Steinbeck's East of Eden been waiting meekly for so long......

    East of Eden is sooooo amazing! One of my favorite books ever! It flows so well, and is so beautifully written. It's epic in scope, and when you finish it you feel spent (in the best way possible). Bump this bad boy up on your TBR. You will NOT be disappointed!

    You should definitely read East of Eden and Murikami (spelling?), Sherlock Holmes is always fun and Howls Moving Castle is wonderful, too. You need to read all of these. You need a tbr reading shelf all by itself.

  • @kurtfox663
    @kurtfox663 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Definitely the best book on that pile is East of Eden. Ok, I have not read all of them... but it is one to read. EOE and Grapes of Wrath are a whole next level above Steinbeck's short stories, and two or three notches above any of the others on that list. Master and Margarita is a good October read, as is Jonathan Strange and any Sherlock (but by far prefer Hound of Baskervilles for Autumn spookiness). Sign of Four is like 120 pages and just a day read, as is Gaiman's Coraline and Graveyard (prefer the latter to the former) - and both are good for October. A book suggestion for you is Elegance of a Hedgehog, which is both French and key plot point is based upon Anna Karenina; dog named Leo, etc.

    I loved Unbearable Lightness of Being, it’s a great book. Bell Jar is also on my TBR list in Libby. The print is available now, but audiobook has a bit of a waitlist, so I’ll wait around on it until both are available at the same time. I usually do that with my Libby and Hoopla borrows, to ensure I can go back and forth between the two.

    i sincerely hope you will prioritize "the master and margarita". it is my favorite book of all time. if you are very knowledgable on stalinistic soviet history, it will be even more enjoyable as subtle things make more sense. but what i love most about the novel is that it has a deeper lesson to it about not taking life so seriously... which is spoken of, ironically and maturely, by the devil. it has so many layers to it, that will reveal itself with each re-read. i plan on starting my 3rd reread the week of halloween. i lived in moscow for over a year and went to the bulgakov museum and patriarch ponds, upon which returning back home the same day, i was met by a black cat like behemoth in the story... which is one personal reason i have a cult love for the story.

    Just wanted to mention - Kazuo Ishiguro is kind of more of a British novelist than a Japanese one? He was born in Japan but moved to England at the age of 5 and has always written in English, so it's a little odd to categorize his books as "Japanese literature" imo. He's said in interviews that he does not feel that his works have much in common with Japanese fiction. I love him too, and I know you'll love Remains of the Day whenever you get around to it - it is a genuine masterpiece!

    Since you like books about books, you may like _Ficciones_ by Jorge Luis Borges - a collection of fantastic short stories, many about books. Topics include a mysterious rare copy of an encyclopedia with four extra pages; an infinite library; an author who re-creates Don Quixote; a playwright who creates his masterwork in the final one second of his life; and more. The first story opens: “I owe the discovery of Uqbar to the conjunction of a mirror and an encyclopedia.”
    As for an Autumnal read, I agree that Sherlock Holmes fits the bill. But maybe that’s because I often used to postpone my schoolwork to read another Sherlock Holmes short story. 😏

  • @vis1975
    @vis1975 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The master and margarita is my favourite book of all time. It's probably for me what anna karenina is for you, from what I gathered. It saved me from such a bad period of my life so I guess there's a lot of personal reasons for my love, BUT I remember I had lost interest in everything and reading that book made me passionate about something again. So that's probably what I'd suggest to read first.
    On italian literature I'd say calvino is a great start, I particular suggest "Invisible Cities" by him. It's one of the most imaginative books I've ever read.

    Omg drop everything and read Stoner and East of Eden! All the others can wait but not those two! I’m being pushy but I put those books off for way too long and I was ashamed of myself because those two books make me glad to be alive and I’m not kidding. They will break you down into dust and simultaneous put you back together. They are shot-full of beauty!

    I have exactly the same problem with East of Eden :-P I started reading it in 2014, but then life got in the way, and I had to stop halfway through, even though I loved it and it was super readable. Then I moved countries, leaving my copy behind. But fortunately, I managed to get a new copy 2 years ago, and I was planning to read it in August 2021, because I associate it with August. I also convinced my mum to read it around the same time I was planning to, and she did, but I didn't :p. Now I think it will have to wait till next Summer again xP "The Master and Margarita" is amazing! One of my favourite books, I'm curious to see what you make of it. :) I'm also in the middle of "A Game of Thrones", but I put it away for now, as I'm in more of a spooky mood this month ;) I'm currently reading "The Bloody Chamber" and "The Phantom of The Opera", I'm also listening to 2 audiobooks Villette and The Graveyard Book. My husband and I are also listening to The Fellowship of The Ring over the weekends :) I might do what you're doing with The Witcher, finish the first book of LOTR, and then continue with A Game of Thrones.

    I’m from Russia and “The Master and Margarita” is my all time favourite mandatory reading from school (also “A hero of our time” probably). The only problem for a foreign reader is that this book is easier to understand knowing the historical context (there is a lot of satire on soviet life). Anyway, hope you’ll enjoy it.

      Definitely, one of the finest books in Russian literature, I am amazed he got away with it bearing in mind how the author mocks the Soviet stance on religion. Not as well known as "War and Peace", "Crime and Punishment" but is in my top five along with "Quiet flows the Don" and "Dead Souls". Stay well and safe.

    Petition for a Jonathon Strange & Mr Norrell readathon either for October, November or December! Can recommend The Graveyard Book and The Witcher: Blood of elves (I skipped the short stories but this was an excellent introduction to the world in my opinion!) Other Autumn recommendations you didn’t ask for - The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, Frankenstein (although I’m fairly sure you’ve a,ready read it), A Discovery of Witches
    And some winter recommendations you definitely didn’t ask for! Wintering by Katherine May, Castle in the Clouds by Kerstin Gier, Dissolution by C.J Sansom
    oh and a video request while I’m at it - would love to see you go through the BBC’s top 200 books and see how many you’ve read (or top 100 if that’s too much!) embarrassingly I hadn’t even heard of all of them let alone read!
    Wonderful video as always and sending warm cozy vibes your way

    Could you please do a video on all the books by Fredrik Backman. Your thought's and review on all the books but no spoilers. I would love and appreciate it so much. 📚 And also a video on what books to read in the festive season (Christmas) please 🙏 😊 📖

    Oh I hope you like the Bell Jar it is fantastic. I agree regarding narrators. They really make a captivating listening experience. Ahh Norwegian wood is great!! It’s hard to explain what it’s about. It’s more about the characters. I think it’s very subjective what each person can get out of it. For me one thing I hold onto is how opposite 2 of our characters are. I’m eager to see what you get out of it!
    Great video so many of the same books I want to read on your list as well!

    Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is great great book but if you are intimidated Piranesi from her is even better and it’s short!
    Too Cold for Snow is interesting quick read very intimate story I would love to hear your thoughts because it’s actually one of the few books…. (Some might consider following a spoiler but it’s not really)
    I think I “got” and so many on the internet didn’t, it’s like infuriating and I want to know if I am right lol

    I've just started Gaskell's North and South and it's giving me Jane Austen vibes so far.

    The four winds on audio is really good since it's narrated by Julia Whelan. Also, great book.

    Please absolutely read Howls moving castle! it’s perfect for this season: it’s actually spooky, with a lot of magic, lovely banters and a friendly skeleton head~ (I also personally prefer it to the film). The graveyard book is also really atmospheric and has a beautiful audiobook!

    I am curious how will you feel about Murakami. I've read "Norwegian Wood" and "Kafka on the shore" this year from him. While I loved his writing , his plot points, character development and especially the way he mixes fantasy with reality I felt like I couldn't give him 5 stars because his feminine characters are always lacking. I am not sure if it's just a different perspective, due to cultural differences, as I am from Europe and the author is obviously Japanesse, but it gave me a feeling of "I can't imagine an actual woman doing that / saying that" quite often. It was as if he can't gasp the female mind, which is a pitty really, because besides that I really enjoyed his work.

    I've just discovered an author Shannon Winslow. She is a big fan of Jane Austen and has written sequels to some of her books. I've read her first one titled "The Darcy's of Pemberley" and loved it. Its just right for all of P&P fans who didn't want the story to end.
