In this video we visit Dryburgh Abbey and ask a question- why has this area so many of these amazing structures?
We look at the history of Dryburgh, the day to day routine of the inhabitants, and look at some noteable people interred within it's walls.

I'll have a couple more videos from the area. I'll be making a long list for further jaunts too 😂

Along with your exceptional delivery of all the historic detail at every place you visit I would also like to comment that you always deliver with such great respect to those places and people who are involved. What a beautiful Abbey.

Thank you! Not all these historical figures may be liked, but their stories need to be told.

What a beautiful site, and what fantastic weather to visit it. I tend to think that there is more of the Abbey buildings here to see. I've really enjoyed this video Julie, as it is jam packed with details concerning when it was a working abbey and how the site has had care over the last few centuries. Thank you for taking the time to shoot this, and for the wealth of material you have researched on it! .......Tich X

What a beautiful Abbey. Your video was amazing. So many great things to film! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I love waiting patiently to see where you will take us next, and what you will tell us about the area. It's like a treasure hunt. The treasure is hearing the history of each place, and getting to see so much of it as well. Thank you!

Thank you! I'm always aware when I visit these sites, that not everyone will be able to get there themselves. For that reason, among others, I try to get in as much detail as possible.

What a beautifully presented video. I'm amazed how some of those walls remain free-standing without any support of the rest of the building. You had a gorgeous day for filming. I love your work.

I now have the overwhelming desire to visit the border region and to stop and explore rather than drive through without stopping. A grea video as ever, love the new hair colour btw

The hair colour will change, the beauty of the Borders won't, ha ha! I will be back, for longer next time, really enjoyed my few days there!

I've not managed to visit Dryburgh Abbey, yet. I definitely want to go there. I did visit the Dryburgh Wallace Statue, which not far from the Abbey.

Didn't get to the Wallace statue unfortunately, I was really only down in the borders for the Ancrum dig for Archaeology Month. My hosts kept me busy away from the dig site too, great few days!

@@ExploringScotlandsHistory Maybe the next time. The statue itself is only about a ten minute walk from the car park. Dryburgh Abbey is a stunning place. I need to go back to visit.

I love an abbey ruin and there is quite a bit left of this one. The work of the stonemasons is astonishing, so few people have the skills for this work today.

It's a fab site! We have a stonemason works on a local ruined church up here I have links too. I could watch him at work all day! I actually spent ages one day talking to an old hap who was repairing a stone wall. His feel for the stone and the craft was breathtaking!

I lived just down the road from Arbroath Abbey. Each time I went through the Abbey 'pend', I would touch the walls. It always felt warm (it is sandstone). If I shut my eyes, I swear it was like I was meeting the stonemason who had just dressed the stone & put it in place. 🥰 Thank you for the video! It was sooo interesting! Been to the borders many times (husband's father was a Terie & has family there) but for some reason, we've never visited this particular Abbey. But this video was so interesting I really think we must visit! 🙂

I was there in 2021 but the herris fencing was up so it was good to see inside it with you. Great video as always, and you got cracking weather for your visit x

I had time in my itinerary for one abbey site. Tbf, I chose Dryburgh as it's one of the few that has most of it's fencing down. I will get back down to the area, hopefully when the other sites look less industrial! Thank you!

@ExploringScotlandsHistory I'm hoping to do the same. I love a good nose about in all the nooks and crannies of old buildings and being deprived was hard! x

they have these stone coffins also in St Andrews they were discovered when they removed huge stone slabs which were covering them.
