Mechanically and aerodynamically, this Alfa shouldn't be able to overtake everyone, but Kimi doesn't know it so it goes on overtaking anyway.
This shows that even he is the oldest person in the grid he is still able to compete with young drivers

It's the tires too. He didn't have to sit as long in the grid as other drivers and he did great job keeping temperatures just right. That gave him the advantage to be able to drive as well as he did. Of course his skills and experience are undeniable too, nothing away from Kimi. But the tires are just SO tricky to keep at the exact right temperature to work and that's something Pirelli needs to fix. Basically, Kimi was one of the only drivers able to do that, and also because he didn't have to sit on the grid so long.

Actually Kimi had great starts at pretty much every single race this season. He starts in 18th and then after half a lap he is 13th and in front of Antonio. Just shows how important experience is

Finally someone remembers that raging kimi in that unbeatable mclaren of 2005.
Reliability failed him in that season. He deserved the championship imo, but it's history now.

That's the difference between Kimi Raikkonen and almost every driver in the history of motorsport. Prolifically quick but uncompromisingly fair and ridiculously precise no matter the conditions. I really doubt there ever will be another like him. He was poetry in motion in almost everything he did.
I just found out accidentally from Wikipedia that he received a FIA Award for Action of the Year for this lap, well done 👍

Ivo, he hasn't a competitive car. He has a pizza.🤷♂️. And with a pizza, he was able to overtake 10 others animals (yes, they're not F1 drivers) whose usually they use to crash their cars one into another. He did that!!👏👏👏

The best thing about it was that Kimi was racing clean and fair! There aint much drivers which can actually do that... This should be seen as an example for everyone, because this is how racing should be looking like
Also his racing/defending against Sainz is another fine example....Kimi shows time and again how to race cleanly while also being tough.
F1 is gonna lose so much when he retires. I really do hope that if he continues to 2021 that Alfa is able to give him better car/Ferrari is able to produce better power unit. To be fair he should be racing on front driving Red Bull, instead of someone like Albon who cant seem to get anything done.

Kimi's engineer needs to watch more of his onboard - this was business as usual and Kimi could do that every race if Bernie's suggestion of track sprinklers got implemented (or they gave him a quicker car).

I've been watching F1 since I can remember. I have the complete races from the late 70's to this day. All of them. I have books and lots of footage from the early days. This is quite arguably one of the best first laps of any driver in the whole F1 history considering KR was driving such a poor car. I can remember Senna's first lap at Donington in 1993 and I always remember the start of the Dutch GP in 1983 when Eddie Cheever jump from P11 to P2 right at the first corner of the old Zandvoort circuit. Eddie was driving the Renault. This first lap from Kimi stands up very well among the ones I just mentioned before. And also Jean Alesi's first lap at the French GP in 1989 wich was his F1 debut btw. Amazing stuff.
Edit: The most amazing thing of this first lap by KR is that when he reached sixth place, Bottas and Sainz could already be seen at the front. That is absolutely amazing.
Tremendo comentario, Ernesto!!!! You justified all what I said and I agree with you that this lap is one of the best not only for the overtaking, but also for the car Kimi was driving. We all know that this year Alfa Romeo is among the three worst cars on the grid.

@@johncale1849 Button had no grip advantage , true but from what i remember something like 4 of the cars he passed went off the track via fighting with each other or picking up damage. Not to mention the 2016 McLaren was a genuine midfield car. The Alfa, on softer tyres or not was a shitbox. Very impressive examples of opening laps for both of them though, these are the moments that show why they're world champions.

It's a lot more than that. He has incredible natural feel and precise inputs. I can tell you now of the 20 drivers on the grid now Not 1 of them will ever be that precise or fair...Not even close and it doesn't matter how many world titles they have after their name. It counts for naught for this level of class. 1 of a kind. I think Jim Clark was an incredible natural talent and one the rare fair racers. Ayrton was incredible natural feel but he it is hard to compare cars of those eras and Ayrton was not clean by any stretch.

Yeah the moist caught a lot of people off guard. Also the grip of the softs was very OP. That grip only lasts for a few laps though. Just a great driver in perfect conditions for something like this to happen.

Track was still slippery and green, this is just pure natural talent, no amount of telemetry analysis can replace this. Dude was unreal with the Michelin tires, still one of the underrated greats of the sport.

With the utmost respect to Senna 93 lap. He did have a better car relative to the field compared to Kimi and believe it or not 1993 cars had traction control whereas 2020 cars don't so it makes Kimis lap mighty special

He just has that old driving style that none of these rookies have. Imo watching onboards from Kimi or Nando is the most entertaining because those old dogs just drive different. You can really tell that he's on the limit a lot of the time but yet he's respectful and straight up surgical, you won't even know he passed you.
New things are going more and more professional over the time. New drivers, new cars, new styles...And that professionalism oftenly takes the soul. Now, the new pilots obeying the education they took under that professionalism. But here Kimi just thinking "This is a race and i will pass them." That's all.

I watch this many times. It must go down as the best first lap in a race in F1 history. I am a big Senna fan, but this is better than Donington 1993.

Senna himself in an interview said that donnington wasnt his best race, he said it wasnt because he had traction control and the car felt “easy” to drive. Donnington was undoubtedly a legendary first lap but Kimi’s last here is just unreal.
With better car/power unit there is no question that Kimi would have been on points today...and on most other races this season as well.
His racing against Sainz as well was really awesome to witness. To all ppl who say Kimi should retire to give his place to younger drivers.....well this right here proves you wrong!

Fantastic how Kimi just placed the car safely into a space in each corner. Watching this there were no moments where I thought he was going to contact, just Kimi doing his thing and placing the car smack bang where it needed to be to claim position. Pure talent.

@@shiko1859 In my opinion yes, it was partially max fault. His aggresive driving style made him more susceptible to collisions whereas kimi will avoid crash and play it safe. Sure, with how max drive, he would have better and cooler overtakes, but the fact that this cautious old Kimi is overtaking like crazy makes this overtaking masterclass a lot more awesome
His ability to spot the braking and throttle zones so much better than every driver just speaks to his experience. Can also see that every corner he's overtaking, entry and exit, he leaves plenty of room for the other cars. Class drive from the Iceman.
This is...just..you know...manly tears moment. You don't need a cup if you can do this. Probably this video has more views than the champions final moments...isn't it?
It's alot more than just experience. It's incredible natural feel and precise inputs. Most of grid wont even be driving in 20 years let alone be able to do that and that includes multiple world champs. This race & conditions just highlights what I've known about his incredible skill for those that could not see it in normal race conditions

I think gasly or perez should have won it Perez for a brilliant recovery drive and gasly because he beat the Renaults the McLarens and Perez to finish P5 but kimi had a very strong drive too

Honestly that's just experience. The way he braked much later than everyone with such confidence and ease just screams experience.
Everyone else tested the track and practiced in a sim. He didn't. He just listened to his instinct.

Most drivers would have retired by now, especially if they had been in a top team and were now at the opposite end of the field.

@@Firemarioflower Dude, Leclerc is driving a Ferrari which has the highest budget in F1 and they have improved the car a lot in the past couple of races whereas Kimi is driving an Alfa which has not been developed since pre-season testing because they are trying to save money.
Give him a Mercedes and he'll beat Hamilton.

I watch this again and again…I can‘t stop watching ist, Kimi is and will be the most talented driver in F1 for me.
When I first met Kimi about 25 years ago on a karting track I knew he was special. He drove circles around us all, especially if the track was slippery or low on grip. In this lap his incredible car control and experience really show through.

@Ric Boni Actually most of his youth was spent on the kart tracks in Netherlands. I think he only went home for vacations.

Such a brave and courageous driver, his driving style and ruthlessness stems from his experience and past days without as much technology in the cockpit, gets on the throttle earlier than anybody else and stays on it longer, constantly trusting his car and super instinctive drive right from the get go. Bravo

As a brazilian its kinda hard to say this but man, this single lap is as great or even better than Senna’s Donnington magical lap in 1993.
So smooth, precise, no squeezing or throwing people off the track, pure racecraft genius, in a car that was barely fighting for points. Grande Kimi!

You can see how patient he is while driving, he knows that he can't be too aggressive so he took it easy and tried not to make any mistakes
The way upshifted earlier not just to leave the space for the car in front but also for the track conditions is a great example of situational awareness. And he didn't even force anyone off the track.
Kimi's lap was absolutely epic. Can't get enough of watching again and again, keeping in mind how slower his car is in comparison to the others'. Hoping for a better future in the remaining 5 circuits Kimi. You've got a huge fan club in Greece.
he's incredible, but clearly, the car was performing well out the gate on soft tires, mercs got passed by macas, RedBull was a pig at the start too.

And properly warmed up tires... His grip was on another level. Of course his skills and experience shine here too, but he wouldn't have been able to do that if his tires were as cold as other drivers who had to sit in the grid for much longer. The margins are just SO tiny for those tires to work and Kimi managed to hit the sweet spot. But yes, this was phenomenal regardless. 🙂🇫🇮
