  • Lime-colored plastering Tadelakt or Eco. Both use lime similar applications.
Think twice before using any lime plaster in a shower; however, everywhere else, it’s beautiful.
Folks, we are located in Oakland, CA.
Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

Depending on whom you talk to or what Google says online, many prep work methods can vary from when we did this video.
Jason and I will show you step-by-step mixing and applying a few tips for using this stucco lime system.
    SHOWERS
At the risk of being a hypocrite. I hate to say this, but it is the truth.
Stay away from all types of plasters in a shower.
This includes all Structo-lite and all the Veneer-based or lime-based pretty finished and deep rich pretty colored pure lime finished plasters.
Even if your shower has an advanced exhaust system, I don’t recommend any plastering systems in the shower itself.
I don’t anymore, you can apply lime-based plaster as even these lime plasters mold fast and must be sealed every 6 months; who has time for this nonsense?
Either tile or attach the plastic shower sheets.
Hell, even the caulking and grouts will mold in time, aging, Don’t apply any limes in a shower.
You can use lime or veneer-based plasters for all other areas but leave the shower alone or face mold in the future.
You will, like me, still have to re-caulk every few years, but your walls won’t mold within a few months like every plaster known to man will, if any lime plaster is applied in a shower.
However, both of these lime systems look gorgeous in any bathroom or any other area of any home, just, "not in a shower."

Howdy Chris, the only work I have done in the UK is in Manchester. Every other year when I visit my wife’s parents’ home located in Manchester, they put me to work on their home, usually it’s fixing stuff that’s broke and gardening.
They have a 300 year old rock built home that always needs fixing here and there.
Good thing I leave my hawk and trowel back in the USA.

Love watching you apply, you flow so smooth. Is there any advantages to using traditional lime plaster in bathrooms rather than modern day drywall mud? I'm remodeling my house down to the studs. Soon as I finish all the Electrical, plumbing, ducting, insulation, I'll be ready for drywall. I like how you can add color. Not a fan of the sky blue, but if I can add pigment to plaster, that'll be great because I absolutely hate painting and my painter past away last year at young age of 45. Thanks for all the content. I have learned a lot and you've helped me add another tool to my handyman toolbag, stucco repair, which makes me some good quick money since there's not a lot of stucco guys in placer county willing to do small stucco patches. There's some hacks, but I'm a perfectionist and I've always had a knack with mud and it's fun for me. I did all my stucco scratch coat patching around my new doors and windows at the end of fall before the rain hit, I'll be applying the brown coat and Omega acrylic finish coat on the entire house soon. I'll have to search your videos to check out acrylic finish coats, but I'm sure you have plenty of videos to give me the confidence to get it done without much trial and error and wasting some expensive material. See you next time Kirk.

@@StuccoPlastering Thanks for the suggestions. I was just going to use what my neighbor used on his house a couple years ago. He said it was easy to use and I liked the outcome, and it was his first time doing any stucco work. He also has deeper pockets than me, and I'm sure Omega is more expensive than the materials you listed. It come in too nice of bucket for it not to be the most expensive material. I didn't even look at the price per 5gal yet, I just knew it was going to cost a lot. I think it said that 5gal bucket only covered roughly 110sqft, so I didn't want to know the price until I had to. I'd probably need a pallet of those buckets for my only 950sqft home with 450sqft garage, and that's just the footprint, not the surface area of the walls. I'll look into those materials at the material yard I get my stucco supplies at. Thanks for the quick responses Kirk🤝

Hi mannie, yes, it would have been cheaper to paint, but some folks wish the benefits of this product. You could Google Eco stucco to read about these benefits if this may interest you.
Also, I don't know of any codes anywhere in the country that says plaster is required anywhere in a home, it used to be it was the only product and procedure that was available. But times have changed and as a result more folks choose sheet-rock these days.

Absolutely loved the video and it is so generous of you to create and share these videos! I have a couple of doubts here regarding lime plaster, can this plaster be applied onto a concrete wall/column, ceiling? I'm doing an internal plaster and the structure is a 40 year old building which is a framed structure. we want a seemless plaster all around the brick walls and the concrete column beams as well. will lime plaster adhere to it. If yes, then what should be my lime -sand proportion and size of the grain! Thank you so much! have a good day!

Howdy Hands on dude, lime plaster can be applied to any surface providing the prep work is completed well.
Most walls should be pressure washed and a bonding agent applied if your not certain it's raw cement, any wall that has been painted absolutely requires a bonding agent such as Weld Crete by Larson's.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hello Kelly Goodman They are all a maintenance issue or as you say a "moldy mess."
I have applied every lime, acrylic, and or cementitious stucco to showers, all have molded in the shower, If you must have these pretty colors they should be on the bathroom walls, not in the shower.
Which is not to criticize all the different shower finishes, as even tile grout will mold,
This is due to humidity with low or no drafts.
I advise folks to tile myself, as I have done to all my showers.
Call me goofy, but I prefer to be sitting on a warm beach with my feet in the sand and margarita with or without the tiny umbrella in it, watching the waves go by then spending this same time applying sealants in a shower.

Lime fininshes were commonplace then but it was applied as more of a slurry that was painted on. Hi Kirk, thanks for the great videos. I am thinking of doing a one coat veneer plaster- Xkalibur- over blue board in a bathroom. Will this be ok considering the excess moisture found in a bathroom? If so, do I need to paint it or can I leave it natural? I've siliconed and screwed the blue board (using the papered edge) to the shower flange and there is a 3/16" gap... can I plaster straight against the shower or should I leave the gap and silicone it. Howdy Sunshine dude, if any bathroom does not have an excellent venting system, walls can mold regardless of any finish, unless you constantly apply sealers, no fun.
I recommend all lime finishes in anywhere except a shower, unless the person realizes they will have a maintenance issues,
but even tile grout will also mold a bit.

Guten tag Kirk. I’m becoming enamored by the idea of lime plaster in our concrete basement-bungalo. Though seems pricey. Before I get carried away - seepage through the retaining wall from outside caused the old plaster to buckle and crack on the inside. Thought about lime because it’s meant to hold and release a certain amount of moisture. What would be your word? In general we don’t have mold issues because we’re close to the desert, but the basement does have a faint must. Had a mason out who said I could probably remedy the moisture problem by getting the water to shuck away from the side of the house there. Sittin like a sponge against the retainer.
Interesting, I read a paper that said lime wasn’t traditional use in the Western US, with the exception of on the old adobes in the desert states. I think ours used a lime parge coat/render coat (?), thin layer anyway, brushed over the top of the concrete/‘stucco’ layer. 1952. Really beaut look and I imagine the lime was used to allow the adobe to breathe and dry out, while still being ‘water resilient’ as they say.
Still trying to find a product to match but no one seems to know what I’m talking about.
Anyway, you’ve been keeping me afloat on these restoration jobs, thank you!

    Hi Kirk
Have a question. I live in a house that was bulit in 1939. Water leaked into ceiling unnoticed for 4 years until cracks came and sagging appeared. Plaster was removed from ceiling and replaced with drywall, looks good. There is a walk through wall between living room and dining room below where ceiling was replaced and I just happen to purchase a wet meter and in some places in the wall that divides the 2 rooms the meter goes all the way to the red and starts beeping. The one spot where water damage was visible to that wall that Im sure came from the ceiling leak that cracked open and it is now dryed, I have yet to repair crack. Now the wall where no physical damage is seen but I can imagine where water could have settle there the 4 years in the plaster, I get reading the high reading that moister is present. Should I open it up to see if beam are saturated? . Do you think I can drill holes in plaster and see if it will dry out like the area that had a crack and is now dry?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good evening Susan, interesting, I've never used a wet meter.
I usually check for dampness, softness, discoloration puffiness in plaster or sheetrock. I sometimes use a screwdriver to gauge the density by poking the plaster or sheetrock.
This tells me ifs it's compromised if it's soft where the tip goes into and through. Instead of drilling, why not do the screwdriver test?
I'm sorry but have no clue as to the accuracy of such devices.

I have no choice but to do a plaster shower for a client. They are insistent, despite the mold issues.
But I'm having no luck with recipes.
I framed out the shower, with niches and a banco. It has an organic form as well.
Framing - then OSB - then plastic sheeting (6 mil) - then hardibacker - then seam seal with tape - then a scratch coat using versabond tile mortar...
So NEXT, I want the basecoat for the plaster. What is the formula for mixing lime based plaster?
Is it fine sand with type "S" lime- a 2 to 1 ratio?
You simply mix the lime and the sand and then start applying?
Then texture it a bit with a green float?
...and while it's leather consistency, add the finish coats? IF you color - use a lime-fast pigment.
When your finish coat is also at about a leather consistency, you add the soap - brush it on - until it stops absorbing.
After this, you "close the pores" by compressing with a smooth stone. Soap: 1 part Olive oil soap to 20 part water. The soap chemically reacts with the lime plaster, forming lime calcium soaps. Calcium soaps are insoluble in water, and fairly hard. They are familiar in areas with calcium-rich ("hard") water, as deposits in bathtubs, sinks, and showers; when soap is mixed with the water's dissolved calcium carbonate/lime, calcium soaps form. 2 C17H35COO−Na+ + Ca2+ → (C17H35COO)2Ca + 2 Na+
Lastly, buff it with bees wax, which will also harden.

You need to watch videos made by people who do the ancient techniques. The Nito Project has a video on tadelakt and it looks like he makes his own mix. The substrate is thoroughly wetted before application and is wetted again if it dries too quickly. The tadelakt in Morocco is made with Moroccan lime that is not as pure as type s. One man mixed fiber into his first coat and an Indian woman used marble dust in her lime mix. From what I understand, polishing it with a stone compresses it and that's what water proofs it. Then they use black olive oil soap diluted with water. If the homeowner uses anything besides that soap and a rag to clean it, it will damage it.

Venetian plastering is usually made from crushed marble, I have applied the marble fishes many times but sorry, I don't have any on video.
If you can spread a plaster finish coat you can spread a veneer or Venetian finish, the minerals are all that's different.
