  • I do not know if the parents of this jackdaw have looked after her since she has fallen off the nest. She isn’t able to feed herself yet, and yesterday she was calling for her parents. I couldn’t catch her yesterday, to feed her, but l found her this morning in an open spot, and she had been attacked by another bird presumably, near one of her eyes and ear.
I fist caught her this morning and ran the tap very gently to put the damaged part of her head under, and she struggled but then opened her beak, she must have been thirty. I put a couple of high protein pellets in her beak and as she wasn’t swallowing, I put a few drops of water too which made her activate her swallowing reflex.
I put her back out under a bush while going for a bit of shopping in a local pet food shop where they had live mealworms and good quality cat food .
When l came back I couldn’t see her, there were adult jackdaws where l had left her but she wasn’t there. Eventually l found her in another further bush, she didn’t want to be caught but eventually I got her and fed her a few mealworms with a few drops of water from a pipette. Then l just held her and eventually she settled to sleep.
I don’t want to put her in the basket, knowing in advance she will struggle and try to get out and maybe damage herself trying to escape this new condition.
It is so nice to have an excuse to do nothing at all but meditate on space and tranquility, for the bird to get safe vibes so she can safely sleep without being traumatised or overly unhappy.
I am typing this with one finger, she is still sleeping on my other hand...
