  • I toured a Neofinetia Falcata greenhouse where many collectors keep their prized collections. Each member of this greenhouse has their own private cage where they keep all of ther personal collection of the neofinetia falcata orchids. This is a fantastic place to visit and a awesome glimpse into this orchid subculture.

    They are by far my favorite orchid to grow. I think for me they are much more interesting than other types of orchids. There is much to be said about the culture and aesthetics to neos so there can be deeper levels of appreciation. And how well a neo look speaks to the skill level of the grower rather than just the cultivar or variety of the orchid.

      agreed! When I first saw them in orchid magazines I really loved them, I love all the effort put into their display and growth its really awesome and has a cool dedication that i love

    This was a super interesting video; it's so fascinating watching how niche subcultures go about their specific ways of doing things.
    As I've never seen this species before I will say I struggled to make sense out of the thumbnail and whether they were strange pineapples or plants growing in an upside-down bowl of rice.

    Neofinetias are popular are popular with orchid collectors all over the world. Not all of them are expensive. Some you can get very cheap. Anyone into orchids knows this plant because they have an amazing scent when they flower and stay a small size.

    I find it very fascinating. But for me that would be kind of meh for me. I couldn't be satisfied with only one genus. I want as much diversity as possible. BtW I am really into orchids and I got into your vids because of your terraplanter DiY, which I wanted to use for orchids, which didn't work(seep watter on the outside because of kind of clay I have at disposal.

      They don't work well anyways with the right material. Google them now you will never see a successful one UNLESS they are grown in a sealed glass box with 100% humidity. Which in thay case a wet rock would work too lol

    Thank you so much for this video! In Canada Florapeculia sells has and sells the largest collection of neofinetia falacta ... I have become an addict! They also ship to the US.

    Love Neofinetias. I have several different hybrids. They are surprisingly easy to care for. Not the biggest fan of the kokedama type mounting seen here. Seems more trouble than it's worth.

    This is really cool, I like these orchids, too, although they are harder to find. I was surprised that people keep their collections at a place like this but then in many homes, they would not have the extra room.

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the idea of keeping them their because you can interact with other growers which is super cool. I wish there was a cheap alternative like that in the USA where you could do this to add a huge community aspect to it. Maybe I should look into this.

  • @MrEiht
    @MrEiht ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is like a community garden?! Seems wicked, esp. plants in cages.
    Soon I will break the world record with my oldest Orchid. As a highlight: It has a two year old Keiki, still on the old spike. But the baby produced its own two flower spikes. Of course, the old lady has three other babies, still attached to mom. Each with two flower spikes. Plus the consecrate like spike of the mom. HELP!!!

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      your orchid sounds incredible!! Nice! Yeah its like a community greenhouse, I think they pay 1000-1400 per month for those cages tho its pricey lol. or maybe its 100 to 140 hard to say maybe got translation wrong

      @MrEiht ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TechplantChannel thank you for your reply. This reminded me of the crazy Japanese Ariocarpus collectors/breeders. I assume they have good paid jobs and enough money. So if it is 140 or 1400 does not really matter. I assumes, of course. But great mini-Documentary about these rascals.

    I came across them in Japan Town in San Francisco. Did you get a chance to smell their flowers? They smell like a mix of gardenia/jasmine and vanilla, they smell so good.
    They're not hard to take care of, similar to phalenopsis care.

    • @joshuabuilds3051
      @joshuabuilds3051 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its more of a lull in interest in the subject matter more than like thumbnail and title work. Like this video was interesting but when it became clear that the orchids were mainly kept in these quantities because of their sheer value, it just kinda grossed me out. I think this channel thrives with the more down to earth "grow a grocery store seed into a legitimate plant for basically free" style of content. I mean im growing an herb garden in pots under a grow light I bought based on your video (Nextlight 150h) just on a table in my living room of my tiny ass apartment, so im guessing the "from seed" grows and basically any propogation content is like the bread and butter. It was a good call to produce a video while abroad though.

      they are in that greenhouse piled up because most Korean people are stuck living in high-rises due to population density so they dont have a lot of space to setup a proper environment for these orchids to thrive. each "cell" is a collectors collection, this place is for like super collectors who really take this seriously. I can see it looking kinda dumb tho if you arent into this type of orchid because they look very similar to the untrained eye. I myself cannot tell the difference of many or what gives them value over another. but if i got into it i bet id be surprised at all the little things that build up to make such a special plant
