Alas, finally one on the road again. These garage beauties are too rarely taken for a spin. Thanks for sharing!

I drove one in Germany quite often in the mid 70's. With a V12 and 320bhp your were king of the Autobahn. Still remember passing a beetle at twice the speed on the autobahn and smoking Porsches.....hahahah.

I've noticed from watching youtube clips that American drivers have the opposite technique to European drivers when driving a manual transmission car ( stick shift)...so in America you rest your hand on the gear stick practically the whole journey , like it becomes a hand rest for your right hand, and you only take it off the stick when you need to make a sharp turn that requires both hands on the steering wheel..here in Europe we keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times and only touch the gear stick when we change gear, then we put both hands straight back on the wheel......just an observation.

It sounds more like he's double-clutching, which is sometimes necessary on older cars. Synchros back then weren't as good, and if the car revs down rapidly between gearchanges, double-clutching helps the synchros match up a bit better. Plus, more engine sound for us to listen to!

If cars had a mouth this one would be smiling from mirror to mirror. Thinking about all those old exotics that is stowed away in a garage and never driven makes me cry. This is what it was made for, love it!!

@areitu: double-clutching with old cars YES, but WITHOUT throttle DURING UPSHIFTING!!! Throttle between double-clutching JUST while you are DOWNSHIFTING!!! Poor old car ... it hurts to hear this ...

what's the problem with double-clutching when upshifting?

    • @jesusrocknroller6805

No problem with double-clutching, but while upshifting WITHOUT throttle! Throttle during double-clutching just while downshifting, because you help to synchronize the turning speed of the two shafts inside the transmission. Also that makes the "work" of the synchronize-rings easier. Sorry, my english isn´t the best ...

jesus rocknroller you're correct but, at least in old ferraris, the gearchange is very long and the revs go down a lot.
that's what've heard. in all fairness i've never driven an old ferrari so i don't know if it's true or not

To be honest, I never heard about that. I had the luck to drive around once with an early 512BB carburetor version, but I never made this experience. But if you want, I know two mechanics, who are incredible professionalists - I will ask them and let you know, if you are interested. Ok? Bets regards!

Whilst enjoying the car and it's obvious quality, I can't help thinking what a waste of a fine thoroughbred car this represents being driven in a country where it is unlikely to exceed 55miles pr hour. Also one should point out to the driver that you blip the throttle to ease downshifts only. Blipping on the way up the box smacks of boyracerism!

Ive been with guys like this in a small plane,
    they are trouble,
berating his pretty sweet wife in front of me like a nerd I felt like decking him in front of her.
this guy is a nervous wreck revving the engine over and over,
    sheesh stay away from him.

Rev matching downshifts are relaxing to me.
