This Megatron is way better than I expected. I've been waiting to see what Takara brought to the table before I trade up Apollyon. I still prefer the aesthetics of Despotron so I will go with him, however I can appreciate how purists can love this figure as the definitive cartoon Megatron. Solid unit, great review as always.

Takara should have released this as MP- *38* rather than as MP-36, because the original alt mode was supposed to be a Walther *P.38* pistol.
Now that you’ve mentioned it (or rather I’ve read your comment) I imagine that they thought of this, how could they miss it? I would think it was a great idea, ‘Megatron P 38. Maybe they felt it would be confusing or infringing on something like copyright or rules of using a real name of a gun. No idea why, but I would bet they spotted that and could’ve easily rejigged the releases but chose not to. It would’ve been worth doing for fans if it was possible.
Its a complicated one but you have to admit man. The engineering of Master Piece Megs makes it possibly the greatest Transformer ever made.
Skullface, I think I speak for everyone when I say, there's NOTHING like a Skullface review! Well done and shoutout to all the people (like me) who pay crazy attention to the smallest things like paint scuff marks.

Uhg man I really REALLY want him, I got the money for him, I’ve had the money for a long while but just the price is a big sting. Especially with that nightmare of a transformation. Most if not all reviews always boil down to a “yeah no there’s no way I’m going to bother transforming him and just have him at a robot mode”
Cause well...heck I’d do the same.
Not much of a fan of the orange safety tips, can’t seem to find many online that don’t have them. So that’s kinda of a downer for me.
Came across your reviews after looking into the BW Megatron MP I pre ordered. I gotta say I love how honest you are, you don’t sugar coat it, especially when it comes to the prices.
I think It would have been perfect if Takara instead of painted the whole figure, they should've used different shades of gray plastic with a sparkle flake finish, so they'll be no paint scuffing & rubbing!!!
Mattimal Optimus then they would have cried about that. if its there to cry about the tissues come out.
I do think they were in a bit of a paradox, but I also have seen megatron decos work without issues.

I really think the thing that would have made this figure better is a better price, and a paint-chip resistant coat on the paint.
I'm not a Masterpiece guy, but I do have a Prime for my collection. This guy...THIS GUY makes me want to buy a Megatron for the first time out of all the past 3P releases. That bot mode, dead on the money!

Interesting watching this 3 years later. The genius engineering and presence for MP Megatron, is what got me into collecring MPs last year. I expected a much more overwhelmingly positive review. I think he is as perfect as possible for a transforming figure. In 2020 all other MP megs are pretty much forgotten.
What sells me on MP36 is the accessories. What turns me off is the easy paint chipping, the visible head in gun mode and the insane amount of visible folds/hinges. I can deal with the Chigurh style arms, but not at a +$200 price point on a figure that some claim to be the holy grail of Megatrons. To me, they tried to reinvent the wheel. If it was prices at $140, I'd probably buy it. And as for price, try buying it anything in $CDN. Just add 30% and triple the shipping costs.

Everyone thought that, however " The Nothing " made us see differently.
I like the Maketoys Despotron.
I'm not slavishly devoted to this toon accuracy stuff as the toon was obnoxious. Despotron is beefy and menacing. Not necessarily better, but my preference.
To enjoy the silencer, just wrap a single layer of masking tape around the back of the barrel tip. Comes off easy, doesn't strip paint, and protects it just fine. And the gun looks WAY better all gussied up. Also in alt mode - the hammer in the back isn't just for looks, when pushed up is secures the parts a bit better.
Anyway for a $200 + toy there should be zero scuffs when handled right. Minor or otherwise. At this price and with that trouble, they're really inviting guilt-free KO embrace.

Great review as always would love to see a comparison with all 4 megs the damaged effect is thing of beauty. Won't be getting it (happy with Apollyon/mightron combo) but these companies should hire you in a consultant role to take them to the next level

I do agree with you.... I feel sometimes we gripe at companies what we want , then when they do it we still complain.... I do believe perfection is sometimes in the eye of the beholder.

For what it's worth, Bobby, the plug on the suppressor does come off. With a nice firm grip on the suppressor, I used a pair of vice grips to carefully clamp down on the orange plug and, with a careful amount of tugging, it popped right out just like the plug in the barrel.

Not a problem, man! I was really dismayed when I got him and saw just how well glued in they appeared to be. Nothing a judicious amount of force couldn't correct!

Very nice review. I got mine last week and he's a definite step up in quality from the last several Masterpiece releases. The $230 price point is high but he's Megatron, not some third tier character like Seaspray so I bit the bullet.

excellent review as always. I got my copy and do see some minor paint scuffs from it. I handle my toys a lot and I'm sure it'll only get worse, but honestly that's a price worth paying for me and I'm hoping that takara doesn't shy away from painting the whole damn thing like they've been doing with this and the inferno mold, I'm accustomed to it now and expect it be the norm :)

The most anticipated review from Bobby in 2017, I like the figure very much, but it is not worth 230 dollars, no chance in hell, I would rather hold on to my Apollyon and see if a KO version of this figure will be released eventually, or maybe who knows a re release will be cheaper in the near future, but I am not holding my breath.

Rarely add Transformers to my personal toy collection these days, but I was hoping this Megs would be a must buy as I've yet to own a G1 Megatron. Looks like a nice overall package, but I'm finding it harder and harder to justify the price on these high-end Transformers when there's so much other cool stuff out there XD

I have had this Megatron for a few weeks now. Almost every time I try to transform it something breaks off. Can Takara take some lessons from Fans Toys, please? Koot is basically indestructible, but this guy is FRAGILE.
I love this thing, can't wait to get him in hand. I know the paint chipping is an issue however I'm pleased that they went this route, they could have easy made him entirely from grey plastic (Like Shockwave) and that would have been a huge mistake IMO. I think Takara nailed it with this guy.

I don't know if its how you lighted the figure, but yours is one of the few videos where the paint finish of MP-36 actually comes thru, most everyone else makes it look like a flat gray

Not so, from a consumer's perspective. A repaint is good enough as is. First time buyers shouldn't be left out & have to pay high prices to get the extra pieces.
Fantastic review as always SKULL BROTHER!!! I was waiting for your review before I pulled the trigger on this piece. To me he is the best looking most toon accurate Bucket Head on the market which is what I want. As for your doing the transformations I think you do a phenomenal job and I love it. I suck at complex transformations and have actually not purchased a figure I wanted because I knew I wouldn't be able to do it. So watching you do it in your review allows me to buy the figure and then follow you step by step. Personally because of the risk of damage and the so so gun mode I think I'll buy this and leave it in bot mode simply for display. I love that I can give him the damaged look and can take some awesome pics of him fighting Prime. As always thanks for all the hard work and dedication you put into your reviews and don't ever change bro. BTW there should definitely be outward ratchets A stance be damed LOL...

Great review Skullface. Ballz to the wall transforming on screen yo. Love MP-36 I pussed out and ordered two so one stays mint. The presence displayed behind glass is well nothing short of amazing. I think the build is sound and the paint is insane. BWahahahah I love the outward ratchets for legs just not the DX9 ratchets for attention to or the splits. Was that Mogley's voice imitation LOL! THE ONLY way I buy another MP Megatron is if Fans Toys Releases. Good Wednesday to you fellow collector. Agreed MakeToys Megatron will remain and still has its place Cybertron's Gladiator representation. The price of admission is worth it. The distributors know ToysRus will not be able to push therefore it is what it is.

Great, balanced review as always Mr S. I think you're spot on with your comparisons to the 3P offerings, I think there's now a Megatron to suit everyone's tastes, but no one figure to suit all tastes.
Personally Apollyon still commands my MP Decepticons as he has the best look for the other figures on the shelf, for the same reason Quakewave still stands next to him over the official figure.
That said, this effort from TT is solid, and a million miles away from the nightmare vision that was MP5.

Another suggestion for the super duper careful people is that they just completely remove the face and remove the chest before transforming it into a gun.
I'm 80 comments late so I'm pretty sure somebody said that but if I got to go through it, you got to go through it.

i vote to keep the transformations in. i'm heavy handed to, and if i see you do it it helps my decision to buy. the frustration is also entertaining :) great video

Thanks for the review! Overall I'm happy with mine; it's a very expressive figure and I'm blown away by all the dynamic poses he can do, especially with the flight stand. But one thing that is a huge bummer to me is that they did not engineer in a tab on his arm to fit MP Laserbeak. Am I the only one bummed by this oversight?

I bit the bullet and Lunartoystore just notified me that it's coming my way. I think it's kinda sad that Takara couldn't find a way to minimize the paint chipping, especially on the gun barrel. It kinda sucks when the best advice a company gives you to avoid the chipping is to not transform it. Not unsatisfied with my purchase at all though, this Meg's will most certainly take Despotron's place on my shelf. I'll probably fool around with him instead.

I want another release with more silver paint, red inner legs, and no gun extensions (to cut cost). Which sounds like something Hasbro would do, but we'll never get due to him being a gun (we didn't even get Shockwave). ...or I just hold out for a KO and do a custom repaint on him.

Takara always does that one thing that the Third Party companies can't seem to get right, with some figures, and that's getting the legs and feet done right. I have Apollyon, and I still love his look, but I do want this MP - Megatron, because the legs are done so clean and perfect. Do you think Takara will release a second wave of this guy fixing the paint issue with some form of protected coat of paint?
im not sure they'll be able to solve the paint issues here. theres just so much of it

Finally got this guy; I love him. Biggest issue for me is how the larger pieces are on decently-weighted joints, but the smaller pieces are tight asf! When I finally get them moved,I've shaken the thing and other pieces have come undone 😂
I know im like 4 years late cuz i just started collecting my childhood toys again...funny thing wen i was 5 years old all my toys that I've gotten were all in good and mint condition!! every time i finish playing with them i always put them back in the box!! who would of known that i was colecting already?! sad that i gave em all to my lil brother who destroyed them!!!!!
I think the gun mode is the one that suffers. The Original masterpiece Megatron way better pulls off the gun mode
so i now have, despotron, mightron, and mp megatron (36). I prefer honestly despotron the most. despotron has the cleanest/most fun transformation, and a stylized looked of the G1 megs i think i prefer as well.
my biggest question, are their pieces on him that are kinda scary, like parts you feel will break easily? That's the biggest issue with all of the 3rd party megs

I like that 6 years ago $200 for an MP seemed a lot. Now, that’s pretty much the norm and you also got $400 V3 MPs
The legs are just to long for me ir the body to small i reckon the thighs should of been able to compress a little like the old MP09 did for the hot rod to rodimus gimmick
I might decide to leave mine in robot mode.....megatron only transformed 1 or twice a show and at times none...what im getting at is hes mostly seen in robot mode so ill probably keep him in robot mode to follow suit

Why doesn't takara go the bandai route a have pieces to make the robot mode more solid?

have you tried doing transformations perhaps from a different angle, I hear alot of reviewers say the hardest part is having the camera between you and the toy.

Good job as usual~! Agree on all your point except the price. $180 price was on sale/pre-order and it was gone. And, it was not including shipping from Japan as far as I know ($30+ for shipping). Currently, Japan retails is around $200. The two recent 3rd party Meg (around $140) do not come with the gun stock and silencer which can be used for different purposes. Those will cost $70 for 3rd party add-on easily. So, the real different will be around $20 compare to $230 price. If people are going to wait for the hasbro version, it may be cheaper, but may also at lower quality as we have seen before (or no paint).
Personally, I will have this one stay at bot mode and wait for a hasbro version for the gun mode/transformation...may be.
p.s. somehow this MP Meg looks better in your review than the others? Weird~~

Hope I can find it at a decent price in Japan. I agree on all points, I don't think I'll transform it more than once. It's a very expressive figure...can't wait for my favorite version of Megatron, the Beast Wars version. I wouldn't mind a G1-esque repaint though! I like the red legs and the swirly chest pattern.

Its funny, 12 months ago this would have been a day 1 pre-order for me, but I think I'm going to be passing on him. MT's works nicely for me and I don't think I can justify the price of admission when I don't have a full roster yet. #NoDoubleDipping!

You should do a video on which transformer in your collection is the most stressful to transform. I never transformed Apollyon. But my most over complicated transformation in my collection is WarDog.

Thanks for your response yesterday. Thought I'de return the favour & Recommend something for you for your Star Saber.. I know you replaced some parts BUT... KFC,s Swordsman Add on set is AWESOME.. You do have to take the Arms, Legs, & Shoulders completely apart, BUT its worth it..IT replaces Everything Takara should have done to begin with. Can't recommend it enough!!!. Personally the only way I'll get this is if there is a great Black Friday sale. Even at the low end prices (which are much harder to find now that it isn't an early preorder) I don't feel it is worth it, let alone the US price. I'm more inclined to buying the eventual KO (which I've never done at this point) but I don't really expect to. I've seen a picture where they edited the toon image you used with MP-36 in a 50/50 and I see the differences much more prominently than the similarities.
If I hate to rate the G1 Megatron options based entirely on look I would got DX9 Mightron, X-Transbots Apollyon, MP-36, and MakeToys Despotron last. The newly revealed Wei Jiang oversized figure, though not MP scale, would jump to the top of the list based on my first impression (subject to change depending on how the figure progresses), so far it is the best looking G1 Megatron by a pretty wide margin, at least in bot mode.
subjectively speaking. i think it would have been much stronger had they gone with the parts forming weapon accessories
Although I'am still under the spell of Maketoys Despotron.. The price tag for this guy isn't appealing at all, although I do like the robot mode for MP-36.. I have to admit he's starting to grow on me.... but it seems like the gun mode for MP-36 is frowning.... I've also notice this in a few other reviews as well.... maybe it's just me........ Nah I doubt it... but, aye man once again gr8 review... Now if I can only get over forking up the money for this price!

Mine arrives tomorrow... I figured if this and a few other reviews all went pretty poorly... I'd just put him on eBay. But now I know I'm definitely keeping him.
This is Megatron, and so I'm fairly sure we'll see a Hasbro release, and my hope is that maybe Hasbro can do something about the paint issues. This guy looks amazing in videos/pictures, and from what I've consistently heard, even better in person. If that's true, I'd be happy to buy a 2nd one from Hasbro if they can improve the paint situation. Maybe with a special finish? I don't know, I'm not an expert on this stuff.
I'm leaning toward not transforming this guy, at least for now.
On a semi-related note, I won't even transform Sovereign (Sovereign ms only transforming toy that I won't transform). I think there's far less risk there, but I just love him so much, that I can't stand the idea of possibly scuffing him. I'd also buy a 2nd sovereign with a more cartoon accurate blue. :p

Always enjoyed your reviews even if I disagree with some of them. Great job again. I still think the proportion is off for a transformer (the cartoon was never consistent in terms of proportion), especially comparing to MP10, but it's definitely the best looking Megatron aside from Apollyon. The gun mode sucks though. Hasbro can probably produce this guy in $100 range like they did MP10, but in a country that you can have real guns, but not toy guns, that may not happen. Keep up the good work.

You gotta admit, it's kinda funny that you fret so much over paint scuff damage, and yet you went for the damaged accessory look for this video.
I like the idea of some scuffs or whatever on him. He's a warrior and a gun. He's not a runway model or an honor guard pretty boy. Look at any real world gun that's been around for long, and it will have scuffs and dings all over it too. I like to think that Megs would consider them all badges of honor.

Ok, mine came in today, and he has trouble standing. His feet almost don't seem to be even, one notch back sends him leaning back too far, a notch forward has him leaning forward too far. He stands for the most part, but I'm scared he'll fall back or off the shelf at any moment. Have you struggled with his feet, and do you have any suggestions?
Ok, I figured it out. I don't think I had his back and thigh posture right, making him lean too much. The feet are still finicky but I can work with them

another amazing review Mr Skullface. I think you sold me on him, just not sure when I'll get him. I knew this was going to be a long video due to your way of reviewing, if it would've been a short video than I knew their would've been a lot left out. As far as the electronics go, have you ever thought about doing a one & done shoot? As in just showing off the electronic feature ONLY during the review than permanently removing the batteries.
I have, im just not sure I want to dump money into all those expensive little battery types lol
TFSource just sent me an email about all the things not to do to this figure (i.e., attach the nozzle, arm cannon), and warned about the hips during transformation - I just can't believe I got that warning for a Takara product ... that was stuff I saw with Apollyon.

I cancelled my order when the paint chipping fiasco came to light and it really hurts my heart. He looks great and is all sorts of fun to pose but I just can't justify blowing 230 USD to buy an action figure to fragile to Transform or use his accessories. Hopefully a reissue down the line fixes some tolerances. I want to want him but man... I feel burned.

Best review of 2017, great job as always! A must buy for me, probably wont transform him. I for one enjoy watching you do the transformations, and it comforts me in a strange way that I am not the only one who has trouble opening those fucking plastic sealed packages!

Honestly I find myself torn between this and Despotron, but that's more because Despotron's proportions appeal to my sense of aesthetics design-wise. I will say though, this didn't strike me as the transformation nightmare I was expecting, at least not as badly as the original MP Megatron or Apollyon.

I might be in the minority here but I think this thing encompasses the character Megatron to perfection. It looks so bad ass on a shelf and I think people forget how difficult it is to design something that's meant to go in the palm of your hand to turn into a "giant" robot. Let's be honest here. If you are paying 200 plus for a figure you are not buying it to "play" with. If you get chips then guess what folks. Add battle damaged face and chest and embrace that sh*t.

The thing that throws me for a loop when it comes to esthetics with this figure is the fact that he basically has a fake chest. I understand that sometimes happens with the carbots, but there are some transformations you just don't mess with. Optimus' chest should always be the actual front window of the truck, Soundwave's chest should always be the actual cassette tray and Megatron's chest should always be the solid centre part of the gun. This chest looks like someone nailed a plank to a junkyard. For the life of me i don't understand why they chose to do it this way.

Maybe Takara will release it as an original Diaclone-style "Browning" - black with brown grips. Then paint chips won't be an issue. It's as if Takara hired Badcube to design this guy.

I haven't transformed him yet, but I will. good advice about using the damaged chest and face, even if that is how you wanna display, it almost makes sense to have some chips there. maybe they will blend or be camaflauged. I had a paint scuff right out the box close to the first one you showed, on the shoulder.

I must be crazy but I feel like getting first FT's Phoenix and PE's Beast Gorira. He seems sort of O.k but it must be the price point. On the other hand he'll become even more expensive soon.

sjit dude. good review. relevant points. figuring out whether I should get this next to my apollyon. I like the bulkiness and chestproportions of apollyon, but this guy looks sooo dynamic, even in a passive pose. steep price though. thanks once again.
