I have been rinsing Lifeforms the past few years, and it's probably my favorite, but Dead Cities is the one that made the biggest impact on me in my late teens, so it's burned into my brain in a particular way. It definitely connected to my love of Romero's zombie films from the 70s at the time, in fact the lo-fi aspects of 'First Death In the Family' always put me in mind of a Goblin track for some grimy Italo horror, corpses trudging around an abandoned city - I think it's a brilliant closer for the album proper. Also, while I could sit down at a keyboard and bang out the themes from memory, I was never sure what many of the titles were on side 2 after antique toy, thanks for clearing that up for me! Also I don't know how but I was certain that Punk Cities sampled Crass? I don't know where I got that from.
Picked up the limited CD release with the art booklet on release day. Still a favourite, although more difficult to quantify why compared to Lifeforms and ISDN. It features some tracks that I am slightly ambivalent towards but also those that I feel are real career highlights. Glass, as you rightly state, is an absolutely beautiful piece and the best track on the album.
I loved the mix of dark and beautiful on this album, along with the artwork, the whole package really. I’d already fully bought into the whole FSOL ethos by this stage, so it wasn’t difficult for me to like it! Hats off to you for pointing out some of the links from this and their sibling tracks on the many From the Archives series. Another great episode, thank you 🙏🏼
Oh, when I eventually get to the Archives (probably about March at this rate!) there'll be a LOT of wonderful trivia of the "that squelch sample was used on these Lifeforms tracks" variety.
I never saw the book that came with Dead Cities, I remember a friend at a party telling me about the snorting of the skin cells story, it really stuck with me.
Picking a FSOL favourite...Damn each has played a significant part at different times in my life...Bit like complex anatomy studies...How can you compare skin to bone
I'll have to give Dead Cities a listen later, for some reason I just don't really listen to it much, nowhere near as much as ISDN, Lifeforms and Accelerator.
Yeah, I find this is more commonly the case with Dead Cities than their other '90s records, often wondered if it's because it's more direct and less trippy sounding.
Brilliant album
Fantastic work yet again! Yage may be my favourite piece from them. I never tire of it.
I literally just listened to the album yesterday before this was uploaded. Dead Cities is such a great album.
Sensational album. A true classic.
Brilliant stuff as always Purlieu, thanks!
Great video!

Dead Cities was the future. Thats what we got. My favourite album of all time. 1996 was the best year IMO.
London is living up to that vision.

Very interesting as always - thanks for uploading ✌
