    About the IDM term, I would argue that it's a bit rewriting history. What I mean is... There is no denying that the mailing list on Hyperreal was created in 93 but as far as I remember, the term of choice at the time and for many years was Intelligent Techno. The term IDM became commonly used years later. Not before the end of the 90s, not before internet became widely accessible to a lot of people. Because let's face it, an obscure mailing list on internet in 93 was insignificant to the scene of the time...

    I don’t have any of these albums you covered, my brother was a big ambient fan of this sort but it didn’t interest me at the time. I’m finding myself leaning towards it all now though (rose tinted ears maybe) and I loved this review. Great narration and humour as always!

      I actually avoided FAX for a long time, largely because I couldn't deal with long tracks that go nowhere (that's still a thing, although considerably less so these days), so there were albums here I've not listened to anywhere near as much as a lot of the records in this series. It's always fun to have a trawl through FAX as there's still stuff I've never listened to before.

    Great stuff as always. 'Chill in, chill out' on Organic Cloud is one of my favourite ambient tracks ever, and I really think it's my favourite album of his, probably because it's the first one I heard. Agreed on Solitaire, what an album - P.M. is another of my ambient faves - what a voyage..

    Lots to comment on here. I guess I will just mentioned the most important one for me was. Talking with Martyn Watson in 2002 and exchanging some packages. He kindly sent me a cdr of the future International Peoples Gang album that eventually got released in 2006. A few tracks from the cdr didnt make the final cut including one of my favorite. I still cherish the letter he wrote me and that cdr. He sadly passed away a couple years ago. RIP Martyn. What a nice person he was to one of his fans. I almost reissued the Miasma album with Tom but pressures from my distributer made me change my mind. After they heard sales werent great with Lucid Dreams on Astral Industries. I still feel a little crappy about that one. Tom was very understanding. Great job on the video. I remember this year very well. It seemed like a change of the tide.

      @@rediscoveryrecords1348 lovely story about Martyn, thats a really nice thing for him to do. And that’s a shame about Miasma - I think one of the reasons Lucid Dreams didn’t do so well is the spoken word which annoyed some people, although the art rock elements of Miasma might be equally as alienating. It must be difficult to work out how to market reissues of fairly obscure albums.

    • @rediscoveryrecords1348
      @rediscoveryrecords1348 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @absentwithconcept Ya it's something that needs to be in mind. I talked to the owner of Astral Industries about Lucid and he thought the same thing about the lyrics. But he didnt mind it obviously. Miasma actually works out great for vinyl timing per side. I may decide on doing it if Tom is still up for it. It would be nice to have something from em:t. Mat Jarvis is q pretty good acquaintance and Ibhave bothered him for over 20 years about putting it on vinyl. Way before I had a label. Hes just against it being on vinyl. It works out kind of awkward for vinyl. Long album.

    I have to admit by this time I’d moved on a little from what the guys were doing. It seemed much less relevant to me by this time, despite liking some psychedelia in my younger days. That said, I did keep an eye on their output as I had a huge move for Lifeforms, ISDN and of course Dead Cities. Once again, a superb catalogue of this era. Top job 👍🏽

    We spent the 90s waiting for gaz/Brian to turn up to play live FSOL. When they did appear on a line at Big Chill, Gaz turns up dressed as a hippy and precedes to DJ loads of psychedelic 70s music! 😂. I think it’s they got dropped by virgin (shame) and at same time Gaz wanted to go a new direction and dress as a unicorn and play psychedelic music whilst Brian was still on electronic tip. In the end they combined for Isness etc. I think they lost loads of dedicated followers up until they started to create Environments and get FSOL back.

    • @absentwithconcept
      @absentwithconcept 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, The Isness is definitely a compromise album, with some very electronic bits (which seem more obvious in hindsight, I think)... it's not surprising that Amorphous has become less overtly electronic since FSOL has returned again.

  • @srh9056
    @srh9056 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Another great episode. Thanks. After being a pretty hardcore FSOL fan right from 1991 I have to be honest I was quite gutted at the psych, rock proggy style they finally returned with in 2001/2002. I wasn't surprised though as I always had a feeling they would go in a more rock inspired direction at some point in the future after the 1995 Essential Mix (which I was quite bewildered with after hearing it at the time). I really did want to hear another more electronic FSOL especially after waiting so long for them to return like many fans did but after a while I (sort of) came round to the new 'progtronica' sound & really liked some of it. Despite my initial disappointment with the new musical direction I always really liked the Robert Miles remix. Without a doubt one of the more uplifting & joyful tracks FSOL had been involved with upto that point & remixed very well.

    • @absentwithconcept
      @absentwithconcept 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @srh9056 yeah, in hindsight it’s almost Dead Cities that feels out of place - the 1997 Monstrous Bubble mix feels like the next logical step after the 95 Essential Mix to me, although it’s rare I find anyone else who joins up the dots the same way! I absolutely loved this era of stuff at the time, right at the peak of my unhinged level of fandom, but I totally get why a lot of people struggled - I once asked Brian why they didn’t deliver the material as two albums: an FSOL one with stuff like ‘Her Tongue is Like a Jellyfish’ and ‘Elysian Feels’ and an Amorphous one of Gaz’s songs, and he acknowledged that would probably have been a better idea. I’m convinced that wouldn’t have absolutely decimated the size of their fanbase if nothing else!

    • @srh9056
      @srh9056 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@absentwithconcept Funnily enough 'Her Tongue Is Like A Jellyfish' & 'Elysian Feels' are the two real standouts for me along with 'The Lovers'. In other words, the more FSOL sounding ones. That's really interesting that Brian agreed with you about bringing out two separate albums at the time. That would have been great. I sometimes wonder if they're was a bit of friction between the two of them regarding how psych & how electronic they should go. One great thing for me was that this new era for FSOL did make me start to listen to other styles of music that back in the 90's I would have turned my nose up. I remember even digging out my Dad's old ultra proggy Genesis 'Nursery Crimes' album amongst others which I hadn't heard since I was a kid lol!! Yegh, agree about Dead Cities, I remember being surprised & relieved that it was so electronic sounding after the 95 Essential Mix & also the 1995 Peel Session which also (to me at least) sounded much heavier & rockier. I do still love that extended version of 'Quagmire'.

    • @absentwithconcept
      @absentwithconcept 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @srh9056 yeah, the Peel Session feels like they're doubling down on the more live side of the late 94/early 95 era, obviously at some point in late 95 they started working with more melodic and electronic sounds again. It's pretty well documented that Gaz kind of took over on The Isness at some point, Brian mentions it in a few interviews. I'll get into more detail about that in the Isness video (which I'm just about to start editing!)

  • @etapiscium8194

    I was going to wait until The Isness video came along to comment but what the hell. I didn't know of any of this stuff happened until much later. As far as I knew FSOL disappeared for ages and suddenly Amorphous turned up. My feelings are still a little mixed about that.

    • @absentwithconcept
      @absentwithconcept 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@etapiscium8194 yeah, most of this 2001 stuff got very little hype in comparison to The Isness, and I’ve spoken to people who ignored the Papua stuff (including Translations), just writing it all off as remixes, so the ‘reintroduction’ wasn’t a big success. As I’ll get to in my Isness video in a couple of weeks, even some of those ‘in the know’ still held out hope the album itself would be a bit more FSOL sounding.

    31:22 : Oh, is Dead Skin Cells considered a favorite by fans? I never knew it was that widely appreciated! I always liked it and I just chalked it up to my tendency to rarely liking the singles tracks and more often than not going for the more unusual cuts on any album that I listened to ;). Of course I liked Cascade but I liked the versions on the Cascade single more. Dead Skin Cells might be my favorite on the album and I always thought I was weird for appreciating it that much. (weird is a weird term considering the material, though ;D)

Phil western was on the label also coincidentally EKKO is on there. Also Pilgrims of Mind who I'm sure you like. The company Magnetic Blue and Northern Circuits. DOSSIER the German label, some of the artists went to Interchill from there. You wont find any ambient techno there or much IDM. But it's probably one of the most important labels from Canada. This was truely a scene where you could hear a wide variety of music regardless of genre and not confided by DJs constricted be a BPM. A freeform DJing where djs could express thenselevs by reaching deep into their music collections without fear of being a called a bad DJ for a dodgy mix.

    Imo Idm and ambient techno often get combined when they are very different. If it has a jittery beat than its idm. While ambient techno is b12, As One, Future beat Alliance, Stasis, 2000&one, Terrace and many more. Than obviously, IDM is your autechre, bola, afx, phonem, arovane, lackluster etc etc. Even though Artificial Intelligent conpilation imo, actually was partly the cause of this confusion while most people celebrate the como as the start of it. When actually ambient techno started 1990-1991 just after ambient house like you have done a good job in the timeline here. I find it odd people combine idm and ambient techno as sister genres whrn they are so different. Only really related by melody. Which most thing have melody. Good video btw

      @@absentwithconcept Nice. Ya, the sound of New York was interesting because I consider Instinct Ambient (in America) as the first producers who were also techno/rave DJ's and artists to then be doing music in their bedrooms. Almost like a post-rave bedroom DIY scene. Seeing as how the Storm Raves brought Rave to USA from New York and originally from UK, these brought an ambient sound to the scene. Like, I really love Mille Plateaux for example. And lots of German labels. Glitch, ambient avante garde and minimal techno. Raster Noton, Staubold, Force Inc, Mille, Kompakt etc in 1994-2000. It seemed that alot of this Instinct ambient was in line with that in some ways. Many of these producers (Taylor, Dietrich, savvas, Abe Duque) did minimal techno in 1995-2000 also. So they all seem to be related but not really. I am a big fan of learning how genres inspire each other pre-internet or pre-1997 at least. That way its interesting to see who really started their own sound. I find it all interesting. History is y fav subject. Ya, one thing why I was reluctant in doing a youtube channel for so long is I didnt want to be on camera. If I could do a radio station, I would have done one years ago. @ yeah, there’s such a link between the New York stuff and the German minimal scene, made more obvious by the turn of the century stuff where there was a huge crossover between 12k and all those labels you mentioned. I really think being separate from the UK scene helped with that, over here we seemed to really struggle with the decline of the ambient era, a lot of people just went back to fairly basic, commercial sounding stuff - a lot of big beat and ‘downtempo’ was very, very bland - whereas the New York scene seemed to really embrace emerging styles. The editing takes longer than I like - I’d love to be able to make more videos but there’s just not enough time, a couple of these a week is all I’m capable of!

    By the way, have you caught this album? It is incredible and covers some of your years too. th-cam.com/video/kwHzALwhKNc/w-d-xo.html V/A - Virtual Dreams II: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, Japan 1993-1999' (MFM072)

      Yeah, I like both of the Virtual Dreams compilations - they'll get a mention in the final episode of the series, actually! Some lovely stuff there.

    When I subscribed you had 808. I hate to break such an important number.

    I remember the 'ISDN Show' being available for stream listening via Realmedia Player. (i think I managed to scrape the entire .rm file, will have to check the archives) Was my first exposure to My Kingdom, and even with RM compression I knew it was something special. Was overjoyed when I was finally able to get my hands on Dead Cities and the MK Singles release to hear it properly.
