"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

It is insane to me how delusional the American people are to believe that someone who has already been President is a "change candidate". This country is screwed, half the American people don't live in the real world.
Or that a current vice president will be a change candidate.
You mean vice president.
We've had 12 years of democrat rule, and all of DC hates this one orange dude. How is he not the change candidate?
"half the American people ... " (believe in Trump)
That is among the most B.S. lines people say, including the media. People who support Trump aren't anywhere CLOSE to half the country. It only seems that way because so many people don't vote.
Aren’t you people insisting Trump is going to overthrow the entire American political system? You’re unintentionally painting him as the candidate of change with your poorly thought out attacks
The fact that people still prefer a mentally declining insurrectionist is just sad on Americas part
The fact that these are our only two choices is what's really sad
It's the racism for them
Lots of boomers and even some zoomers drank the kool aid. Millenials and Gen x are split.
You must be new here lol
Yeah both candidates have been uniquely awful since Clinton vs Trump.
I don't care what the polls say I am going out to vote. I'm going to pretend as though my vote is the only vote that matters and if I don't vote for Kamala Harris she will 100% lose. I suggest EVERYONE do the same.
Will do… except my vote is for Trump.

Sugar highs in polling makes me sicker than a dog. I look at people and how they react to policies passed then repealed as people are petty and racist and stupid and politically tribalist again just like back in 2016. As women play the sexism card I hold saying pass on opening bet as Sam Harris and the IDW and comedians are about to get totally destroyed on Nov 6th i9f trump wins by the humorless left seeing them as dishonest and discredited again like they were back in 2016 when trump won the first time.
Believe me, those of us that’re staying home couldn’t care any less if it’s in the bag or not. We simply aren’t going to be extorted by the corporate class using the threat of fascism
Trump seems to think they ALREADY stole the election.

As someone from the UK, it absolutely blows my mind how this presidential race is even remotely close. I'm not saying Kamala Harris is some sort of progressive firebrand, but her opponent is unhinged and quite clearly out of his mind. It's a sad indictment of the times we live in that he has such a large voter base. It's genuinely insane.

If you go back and look at past election cycles, Trump is really the first candidate to just plaster his face all over TV in interviews or town halls. I was looking into it like a month ago. Bernie did it and Trump does it, but Obama and Clinton and Romney... They really didn't. Outside the debates or town halls, they just did televised rallies or events. Trump is really the first candidate who has made multiple appearances a week on TV to do these sort of things. And even then, people forget this, but after he was elected, he stopped making appearances or doing interviews until just before inauguration. He's the master of media for sure, and maybe he's opened up something that people really should be paying attention to. But it's not the norm and it wasn't?

There's a lot of people not voting for Harris because of her support for Israel. They are voting for the green party.
Not that many, not that it matters.
People have to learn that the green party isn't real, and Jill Stien is a capitalist grifter. She runs for president sells a book, and then does literally nothing until the next presidential election.
While normally I would support voting your conscience, it's idiotic to do so in a election where the other guy is promising to be a dictator and has a history of trying to overthrow democracy. Yes they do .
The media is owned by the very billionaires who know they'll get more tax cuts from Trump. This doesn't surprise me at all.
But Kamala is doing nothing to oppose that. What is it that would really be in the bag, though? Kamala is offering crumbs that no one in their right mind would think she would even deliver, considering every "Democratic" presidency in memory, and she was part of the last one. Is there evidence that Palestine is a significant issue to the broader electorate? I know it feels huge in our lefty spaces, but that doesn't necessarily reflect voting patterns for the entire country.
She can't step on Biden's toes on such a big issue. We won't know her policy until she takes office. Bibi was furious with her after their meeting. I don't think he'd be furious unless she told him privately that the war is done when she takes office.

well duh, capitalism is still going to run away with it.
Walls as VP is easily the best thing she’s done. The question is will it be enough to get her to victory?
That’s sadly true. This is because the interests of those that rule this country (the rich) and the interests of the people are diametrically apposed. Improving the lives of the commoners makes us harder to exploit. Therefore, the rich will make sure that doesn’t happen. Just to keep their profit margins high.
Look what the DNC did to Bernie Sanders.

The debate tomorrow could shift things in Kamala's favour and do as much damage to Trump as it did to Biden a few months ago. 3. The media will always try to spin it as a close election because they want people to stay tuned for any update that could shift things, they want ratings, which in turn is part of their advertising revenue.
I think this is the result of RFK dropping out. Giving trump this bump. I still think she's going to win but yeah it's going to be close.
Yeah people said that RFK wasn't going to do that, but I think enough RFK voters were paying just enough attention to know that they needed to go for Trump if he left. They were Trump voters anyway
I agree completely that we are seeing a RFK bump. I really don’t put much stock in the polls yet since she is so “new” to this election campaign and there hasn’t even been a debate. I think October is when we will see more “accurate” polling….
@@toast_busters 100% agreed. And I totally didn't think he was having any real effect. Just an effect on the polls. So this might be a blessing in disguise.
Disagree, RFK had quite a big "change" appeal once you got past the surface the media outlet gospel preached showing what he said and planned either out of context or shortened to a point it had little to do with what was actually said. I think the change argument and general discontent with the two party system and mainstream media drove a lot of ppl towards him as well as his less interventionist foreign policy ideas- me included btw. I d say RFK ppl in the battleground states are far more in the "undecided" camp slightly leaning towards Trump. What I heard through the lines is that Waltz is actually fairly popular among those for RFK that I know... but yeah, Kamala or also Trump certainly not, there the "change" factor will matter as Kyle suggested.

It really should be. Save the rest of the world of ridding themselves of us.
Umm please read this... Trump signed an executive order to donate $250 million to Historically Black Universities every year. He signed another order to release thousands of Blacks/Latinos from federal prisons for non-violent crimes. And gave us Stimulus checks in 2020.
What has Kammy done for the Black Community?? NOTHING except make us lose jobs, put us in prisons, and make everything more expensive.
Don't panic! You guys have Dick Chenny's endorsement!😂😂😂
The problem you run into with polls like this is with no context, Trump being seen as major change could actually be bad while the ones who said Kamala is maintaining or seeing things moving in the right direction...
This is just like the polls when Obama was in office with a question like "do you believe Obama is doing a good job?" Now both people on the left and people on the right would be able to say they do not believe he's doing a good job but have two different reasons about why they believe he's not good. Doing a good job.

All Kamala had to do was ride the wave of enthusiasm, first she picked Walz, then announced price gouging crackdowns, she should just trot out a new progressive line every 2 weeks until the election. If she came out in favor of conditioning aid to Israel she would win for sure
Nate Silver also predicted the GOP would pick up 70+ House seats in 2022.

This is the first time the democratic base has been energized since 2008…
Contrary to those virtue signaling while enabling the objectively worse candidate, most Americans are not single issue Gaza voters (btw she is still the best person running on this issue).

This is the number one comment right here. I could not tell you the number of conservatives in my circle who have told me how excited they are to watch the debate tomorrow. I hate to say it...but she needs to be openly critical of Biden policies perceived as bad....like the border and gaza....
She was the border czar😅
Biden, and Harris have both worked to have legislation passed, which the republicans despite their support of, and work on the bill, decided it was better for Trump not to solve the boarder. Harris was not boarder czar ever. Harris has a very good stance on ending the conflict now and fighting for their to finally be a Palestinian state.
@@grandgibbon2071 ...most of the resistance to Harris from the left is that they wanted to hear her have more support for Gaza and condemnation of the actions of Netanyahu. I agree she couldn't have done much more on the border than what she has already done....but taking a more hard line approach to the atrocities committed against civilians in Gaza would help with those "uncommitted" voters in Michigan, Minnesota and such. One can still be supportive of isreal as an entity, while pointing out the actions of its leader have been callous towards loss of life to Palestinian civilians.
@@naomihahn7319 The problem is one Harris does have a pretty hard stance on the issue and is the one driving the Biden administration on the cease fire issue. Harris though cannot really come out to one way, or the other because one it doesn't really seem like the left even matter electorally all that much, and taking a hard stance against Israel will lose a lot of voters as well.
I would love to see polling, and focus groups done up to see what the net effects would be from both sides.
The reality seems that more people were not support Joe over his age, and metal faculties then his policies on Gaza.
In general, though Harris, and Biden have both been getting push into a harder stance against Israel. They are continuing to push the cease fire and are becoming more hard line on it. They are taking more actions against settlers in the west bank. So we are slowly as always getting better policies, and shifts.
@@grandgibbon2071 ...yes I get all that. But Biden won by literally 10,000 voters in a couple states. That is less than the number to vote undecided or uncommitted. The U.S. has sponsored this genocide for decades and decades. This violence didn't suddenly escalate. But for trump/the GOP/evangelicals: it's specifically one of their tentpole positions to fanatically support Israel. It's essentially a doomsday cult. You understand this, right? Are you putting down an ideological red line or are you genuinely trying to say with a straight face that the Republican party and donald trump wouldn't give them a larger blank check and encouragement to do as they please?

Because Trump wants to glass Gaza and become a dictator.
Everyone is sponsoring the gen-o-cide, so it's a non-issue or at least not a point of differentiation? That's my best guess.
