Yes! I sometimes stream American channels for cheap games and they will make the screen smaller to run ads during the game which would never happen in europe.
Already happened in Germany years ago. They will always find a way to make more money

@@Cymru85 it happens in South Africa but it's almost always well timed like when there is a foul or stoppage for something it's not random which u can get used to real quick
but that also comes with it's own downsides, that is why it is being tested to have a more NFL/NHL/NBA style of 30 minutes halves with the clock stopping when play stops
there are rules in place to help that games have at least a total of 60 minutes of active play per 90 minutes, this is why in 2023 IFAB advised referees to increase the extra time compensation for every time the game has to stop due to fouls, injuries and/or VAR reviews
however having the players literally stop for 10 minutes for a commercial break can actually increase the risk of injury - just watch what happens in the NFL -, that is why it is believed stoppage time in that version of soccer probably won't be used for long commercial breaks like in the US

High scoring isn't always a good thing. A basketball game that's 100-100 is basically the same as a 1-1, they are tied. A point every 30 seconds or so isn't interesting
Also, some games are so bad, neither deserves to win.
I went to an NBA game when I visited the US and left at the third quarter.
I GET that the tension comes from the difference between the 2 teams but honestly, the scoring just isn't interesting to me. You could not watch 10 minutes and your team might have gone from say, 6 points up to 4 points up. Big woop. Point isn't that nothing changed. Point is that nothing changed despite the baskets being scored. It counts for nothing.
Actually just commented the same thing about basektball (which was on my mind forever). I am NOT alone!! 🙂
Not until you have Promotion and Relegation in the leagues, that's why a 0-0 or 1-1 isn"t boring. Have same teams win or lose same league is boring, no relegation or promotion it's just a franchise and a way to get money and nothing else. No passion .
World Cup in USA? Dont think most fans enjoy it. No public drinking and i guess if they party in the streets like at the Euro in germany SWAT teams will intervene. LOL

The thing that made makes soccer such a global sport is there are so many ways to play soccer, that a way a country plays soccer is really a reflection of their culture. So a country can imprint their cultural identity onto how they play. So England play fast, aggressive football physical football. Japan play a very methodical and complex passing style because they don’t have the physicality of many teams. Italy traditionally plays a very macavillien style of being defensive and tactically intelligent and using exploiting the weakness of the their opponents. African teams tend to be very athletic and skilful and play off the cuff physical football but don’t have the organisation many other teams in other parts of the world do.

I've heard that an NFL match is at avarage 4 hours with 14 minutes of playtime. That means that less than 6% is a ball in play.
Soccer is 45min + 45min non interrupted play with a 15min break. That's 90% playtime.
Time doesn't stop running for injuries but the 2nd judge adds playtime depending of how long the interruptions have been.

@Cymru85 That's why they've started added loads more injury time in football, to make up for the time when the ball isn't in play. 15 minutes of injury time in the Olympic game between Morocco and Argentina earlier today

an average American Fotball game is about 3h long with 1h real Play time but that doesn't mean you see 2h comercials, it's more about 1h 1h formating huddle und then 1h playing, i lik it mutch and i'm from Germany

From what I've heard, soccer academies in the US still tend to run as a pay to play sort of deal. So you get a lot of kids that play not because they're the most talented, but because their parents can afford to pay for their kid to attend such an academy. A lot of extremely talented footballers worldwide come from modest backgrounds. You miss out on such players if academies focus on "paying customers".
This doesn't mean that in Europe, for example, there aren't youth clubs where parents pay for their kids to play, but professional clubs tend to have their own youth setups where paying for your kid to play isn't really a thing. In a lot of cases they can even support the kids through school. That's because the clubs look for talent, not revenue at youth level. Basically the money you invest in supporting the club academy is recouped long term through the players you develop that will have intrinsic financial value once they turn professional. Even at a relatively low level players can still get transferred (traded) for hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.
Another thing that's different and that I'm not sure works in the USA's favor is that the American style of college sport isn't, in my opinion, very well suited to football. In football if you're 20-21 and still not playing against the pros, you're behind the curve. In fact you will often see 17-18 year olds breaking into the first team of professional clubs. A similar thing also happens in basketball and I think Americans are starting to make note of it: you will learn much more as a young player if you start getting game time against established pros, especially when it comes to team play and tactics as opposed to trying to show off your own individual ball skills.
Another thing that's unusual for football but common in the US: franchise teams and closed leagues. That's how the MLS works too. There's no promotion/relegation, no established second tier where teams that do well can earn a spot in the top league. I think this affects the strength in depth of a sport. In football a lot of countries have very competitive and pretty high level second and even third tiers. Sure, they're not as good as the top league, that's why they're lower tier, but because they're competitive, professional and there's something big to play for, they can be a good place for younger players to develop before they can make the jump into the big leagues.
I'm not saying football won't keep growing in the US, despite it being set up so differently, I'm just trying to point out some key differences in the structure of the sport between the US and pretty much everywhere else. The only big country that I can think of that has some similarities with the US is Japan. They have a "regular" league system, like everyone else, but they also have a pretty high level college league system. So it's almost like a middle ground between what everyone else is doing in football and the traditional US college sports system. That said, while Japan has a good league and can produce quality players, they're not exactly world beaters either.

Well said. We seem to be in some kind of 'transition' phase in the US. Even with our 'closed league', clubs are waking up to what an academy can do. Here in Atlanta, the initial plan when we were granted our franchise included a robust academy. We'd seen Dallas do it, and Philadelphia do it even better. We're lucky here - we're "rich"! Our owner also owns the NFL franchise here. You should see our training grounds & facilities, it's insane. Even has food service run by our nutrition specialist.
We just traded Caleb Wiley (homegrown) to Chelsea. I think they're going to loan him out first, but we have high hopes. Young man was 12 when he was in our original academy class, IIRC. Dad might have 'got him off the ground' in youth play, but when the club found the kid, 'pay to play' was straight out the window.
His dad owns a pizza place in the city. Dad loves the game, even helped finance a minipitch next to the restaurant. Kid doesn't come from a slum - but he's no Trust Fund kid, either. It's a wild time for football over here. The excitement that we're finally 'getting somewhere' with our game in this country - but knowing that there's still a lot to do.
Japan has one of the best national teams in the world i dont know what happened.....but they have a mad team now. Outta this world good team
And being low scoring doesnt make a game boring, we do get very very dull games but also so exciting 0-0s

Andy, I think a lot of the problem in the US is that many here don't know the rules. They don't see that in a good game, most of it's spent with someone "..damn near about to.." (as we say in the US), no matter what the score is. Not such a problem with people under 35yrs old or so. We've had a couple of generations here that have played the game as kids now. My daughter and her husband love it.
@@fredshred5194 Well that's a problem of the organization of a sport, not the sport itself. In all honesty - baseball and American football would greatly benefit from relegation as well, it would make the leagues a lot more interesting.
The problem about a relegation system is the size of the US. Here in Europe we have a multitude of different leagues - in the USA it is just one league for a country that has roughly the size of the continent of Europe.
Maybe they could install state leagues, then hold a playoff style tournament for the winners of the state leagues and the best 20 teams then play in a national league or something like that, but a European style relegation system is difficult to install in the US.

For football to start growing in USA an element of competition has to be introduced into the system. One variant, and it is just one of the possible variants, is to form national ligue with 20 best teams, under it 4-6 regioal ligues, then state championships etc. With advance of the best to the higher ligue and relegation of the worst, more games would be important, dramatic and interesting for the viewers. Also a cup competition, where lower leagues teams start in first rounds and are latter joined by higher ligue teams has to be introduced
america is to big, thats why the system with two leagues east and west isnt a bad idea they have now.
but the main problem is the MSL is as other sports a "buy in" league and so will never be able to compare with the rest of the world
There's just not enough football here yet. It's not like the rest of the world where the local football club is part & parcel of the community like the schools or the fire department. And @DaxRaider is right. Nobody looking to get into our first division league without the blueprints for a new multi-million dollar stadium in their back pocket. Those folks aren't spending that kind of money to have the risk of relegation. I'm not happy about that - but I'm not denying that it's true, either. We *do* have an FA-style "US Open Cup" with lower leagues, though.
Closed league system is what makes the teams the most money and works for the NFL, more investors willing if there isnt a chance you get relegated

For me as a German it’s always fun to see reaction videos about football. I went to Highschool in Indiana, PA, back in 2008. And in that time, as far as I could judge, football was huge in that particular school (Of course not as big as American Football) but still got recognized. Americans are not as bad in the sport as the world says. Pretty good ballers. It was hard to keep up with the best. Even for me playing my whole life. Maybe I am not talented enough 😅.

Football is part of our culture, social fabric. As a kid after school you would play in the streets with your friends until dinner. Whenever I had free time I would,play on the streets. Later you become a member of your local amateur club where your parents, family and their friends would meet and socialise, not just playing football. I remember spending the whole weekend there. As a kid I played on Saturdays and my dad on Sundays. Your local football club is like your school, your church, etc. Also very working class at its core. After a week hard work this is where families went in the weekend. At the same time you would also pick your favourite professional team because of your,parents, your friends, etc. So you will end up supporting two teams, your local amateur club and a professional team. It’s not a sport, it’s a way of life and part of your identity.
i also believe in european football the skillcap is by far the biggest of all those sports, some kids just have a ball in their feets for 4 hours a day since they where four years old, you can take your ball anywhere, no further equepment needed. just jiggeling the ball, put jackets on the ground to make 2 goals with ur friends just anywhere, visualise a point on a wall you try to hit and controle when it comes back, kick it high in the air to controle it on the way back. you can do it anywhere anytime, schoolbreaksz after school, in ur backyard. also many things come in considiration to become really good, stamina, fysic, vision, athelics, feeling, speed, controle, agility, flexibilty. if you have all of that only than with 1000s of hours with a ball on ur feet you will reach the pro's.

Ice hockey is the number one for us Finns. Might be due to our climate. Also, our football leagues are played during the summer when most other European leagues span from Aug/Sep to Apr/May/Jun. Most matches in winter months would be dealing with snow and freezing weather.
G'day mate , I was born in Belgium but we moved to Australia when I was 3 , played football for a few years here before starting Aussie Rules Football (AFL) and the soccer help give me the skills to kick both feet in Aussie Rules and even though I don't follow a side I love watching the best of the best in the World Cup!
The most surprising part to me that we don't really have in our sports is that soccer teams always play for something, like either they play for the title, play to qualify for continental tournaments or the weak ones play to avoid relegation to lower tiers, they also play domestic cups and super cups and if that's not enough, they also have national teams qualifiers and tournaments which occur throughout the season so

If you really want to learn about football and how it works, and also how passionate fans are about their team, you should pick any team in Europe, doesn’t have to be 1 of the big clubs, actually I would say your better picking 1 of the smaller teams, and follow 1 of their fan pages. Keep an eye on who they are playing and in what tournament. Check the results and what that means for the team. 1 fan page and you will start to understand football pretty quickly. Would be great to see you react to what’s happening with your team and see you progress.

About the high-scoring. The most popular sport in the US is NFL football. The average number of touchdowns in an NFL game is 3.2. The average goals in a soccer game is 3.1.
The difference is the average NFL game is 3 hours and 12 minutes long, during which the ball is in play for an average of 6 minutes; whereas in soccer the game is an hour and a half long, where the ball is in play constantly throughout.
So, given the scores, the average time it takes to get those scores and the amount of actual on-ball action, can anyone tell me why in America they think soccer is boring and football isn’t?

Yep, you nailed it, you can not really interrupt a broadcast of a Soccer match with Commercials all the time.
Also, Baseball, Murican Football... The fans in the stadium (want to) have time to do one of the most American things: Eating!
Having said that, I want to mention how the Soccer Culture in places like Seattle is actually a big deal, the stadium is loud whenever there is a soccer match, and Fans gather in Downtown (Occidental Square) before marching over to the Stadium.
I only want to say one thing about the fact that football is long and boring. If you have your favorite team and you watch their game, you cannot be bored in the true sense of the word because you care about the result
A friend of mine also explained that the "boring" bit is also an advantage. If you're watching a soccer game with your mates, you probably won't miss anything important just because you're chatting with them. If something important is about to happen, someone will notice and you turn your attention back to the game, jusi in time for that important thing to happen.
NFL can be low scoring sport too if they change the system and 1 TD is 1 point :D Greetings from Hungary!

10:09 there is not just 1 game a week, that 1 game is just the competion game, inbetween you also have cupgames and european leuague games like half of the season there are 2 games a week for some clubs
The key to making soccor more popular the leagues have to be european style. Not not in the way the NFL is set up in the usa.

I saw a video that claimed the USA academy system was completely broken because it requires high fees to participate, which excludes anyone without committed, wealthy parents. The total reverse of Europe, where most footballing talent comes from working classes. In England for instance kids are recruited a very young age into football club academies, as young as 9 years old.
I heard the same thing in 1994 during the World Cup in the United States.😂 The American sports system of closed leagues (no relegation and promotion) as well as the format of a football match, 2 halves of 45 minutes with only 1 break of 15 minutes between the 2, therefore fewer ads for the TV channels, mean that this sport will not be popular with the media and de facto with the general public.
In times of NFL Europa I was a big fan of Rhine Fire and watched every game at the stadium. And I support the following club with same name after they where rebuild in 2021 now playing in the European League of Football (ELF). But I played and trained football and support "my" favorite Team for now over 40 years.
of course its going to grow in popularity, as more parents become aware of concussion issues and stuff, but to be a bit cinical the fact that you have so many people flooding through the borders and they all come from countries that love the round ball is only going to increase its popularity

The second most watched sport in the world is Cricket and Cricket USA are investing Billions of dollars to make it better known in the US. There are already hundreds of youth teams, girls and boys, and adult men and women’s leagues all over the US though mainly on the East and West coasts at the moment. Obviously there’s a large variety of people originally from Asian and African countries who live in the US who want this game to expand and children and teenagers who don’t make it big in baseball find more opportunities in cricket.
This will take time of course but it will surely succeed.

In Caribbean region (northern) of Colombia we are baseball-people, but we are also football-people, both are fun sports... In other regions of Colombia baseball is not a big deal as football.

the world cup countries are selected way in advance, weve known for years now the usa is hosting in 2026. Im worried though based on how poorly the usa hosted the copa america this year.
Think FIFA take a much more hands approach when it comes to everything around the organisation of the World Cup i.e. stadiums, security, ticketing than CONMEBOL. But I think you're right the US authorities are going to get a rude awakening when they see the shear number of fans who'll travel from all around the world to attend, many just to be in city on game day who don't have tickets.

Funny thing is yes football is very popular in the UK, but USA have a better men's national football team than Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, you're actually pretty good at the game! A team in any of the top 4 leagues in England will regularly play two games a week and if they have a very good cup run and are in Europe they can even find themselves having the odd week with 3 games. Wrexham AFC have also got a growing US fan base due to their high profile owners and the very popular documentary 'Welcome to Wrexham' following their progress. Yes it's official, the 2026 world cup will be jointly hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico.

From my perspective Americans tend to obsess over techniques and special skills of individual players over the flow of the match and the overall team.
These are things that are rather prominent in their sports but really not that important in Football.
Also unless the US copies the league structure from everyone else as well as the academy system it won't go anywhere.
And even then you have to fight against the cultural bias against Football.
Here's a comment that I have been posting for at least two years but surprisingly, Muricans don't reply!
In your hour long game that is stretched out to at least 3 hours, whereby you don't actually touch the ball down for a touchdown, unlike our Rugby where the ball is touched down for a Try, where the ball is rarely kicked with your feet in a game called Murican Foot ball, the four quarters of your hour long game, instead of being 15 minutes, last for 45 minutes, each interspersed with adverts, Defence on the field and off again, offence onto the field and other "Special" teams, flags on the play, timeouts, do you know how long the ball is in Play on average?
Eleven, 11, yes, ELEVEN minutes, that's it, done, that's your lot!
What a game! 11 minutes! Over three hours! This equals 6% of the time!
As for low scoring, NFL 18 TO 12 BUT the winners didn't score 18 times, they only scored three times, 3!

The popularity of soccer is a slow burner in USA. It has increased since 94 and their MLS could become a top league in the next decade or 2. Producing a team to win the World Cup will likely take longer however.
I don't understand the American system that gives scholarships to people just because they play well. At our university, you have to study a sports field, and such a field is not only about playing, it is not easy to graduate, and only those students who have excellent results in all subjects will receive a scholarship. A lot of non-sport fields have compulsory exams in a sport-related subject, e.g. canoeing or football. Probably the main difference is that studying here is free.
I'm from germany and i'm a fan of American Football.
Most of the night Games here are really in the middle of the Night so most of the Time I watch them relive an then i can skip comercials, normaly a game is about 3h without comercials its only 2 😅
Allso i think American Football is more interesting because every play can be a big one a Match between some less good soccer teams can be very boring because both sides play only defece, on the other Hand 2 really good teams are very interestig to watch for example CL
In Aus most people that like soccer have relatives from England or where ever that soccer is their No.1 sport and it rubbed off.
Other boys that play soccer Here is also due to parents being concerned with their kids getting hurt playing Aussie rules or rugby. I think basketball is played by more people in Aus than any other sport

I am a Brit I now prefer MLB but I do have to much time to fill. So "my team" being on nearly everyday keeps me hooked. Football can be great when you are fanatical about a certain team but I find it harder and harder to watch random games like I can with baseball. Then again Im far from normal. :P LOL
They tried in the 70's, they tried it in the 90's. Maybe it just has to resonate with a culture, a billion of Indians prefer cricket too. Soccer football is not ideal for commercial television because of the format, and you have to take the boring and frustrating matches with the great ones too, entertainment is not assured. So you probably need local clubs with local fanbases European style wanting to do better than other cities clubs.
It's a tough sport, it's important the kids best at sports are going to play it, not just the ones not good at basketball and American football. People want to watch the best and toughest athletes. It will probably have to come from the number of Hispanics growing, bringing the passion from Latin America. .
To be fair as an European i can see huge progress of football in the states. Especially since lots of known ex players invested in it. It is not uncommon to have good Eu players go and play in MLS. No just old retired ones. When it comes to football its not all about goals and scoring, it is a different culture. Its almost like a battle and all most fans want is for the players to understand the passion and give their all. So when you have two teams like that it is not uncommon for the match to end up in a goalless draw but still be very entertaining. Also US national team is becoming well established, it is a team no one can underestimate.
I'd be cool if you make a video learning (and teaching) just a little bit of the history of football. Most of all the origins of football(soccer), american football and rugby. And yep, they must have a common ancestor 😅
allow me to let you in on a little secret about football and advertisement...yes it's 'harder' to fit in commercials (although they happen all the time tbh) but what do you think it's more valuable, one slot in a 3m segment or a 15s hyper quick spot during a live game? football makes big money on the sponsors and those quick ads that come during a sub for example, where the game is pretty much on hold for a few secs.
yeah you can have more reels on american sports, but inescapable ads in the middle of a live game are much more important to a brand

the MSL needs to be removed or reformed to ever have america get big in soccer ... the "buy in" league like you have in american football basketball icehockey and all the other usa leagues can never compare to a free system ... this ONLY works if you basicly have the only big league in teh world.
with no relegations and no free clubs the system breaks from the inside.

Argentina just won the Copa America. It was held in the US & Canada. Some of the crowds/spectators were massive, mainly Sudamericana or South American. A lot of spectators from Argentinians', Brazilians' & Colombians'. In the group stage the US had some of the biggest crowds, home field advantage. Is somehow seems strange to me, to hear an American commentator. In football it's common to hear different commentators. There's just something, I can't put my finger on it, about US commentators', it just doesn't sound familiar. 2026 World cup in the US, will be interesting.
As a Brit who plays Football (American), I have never liked watching Football (Association) and its much more fun to play it. the entry into the sport is as Cheap as a pair of trainers (Sneakers) or Boots (Cleats) and a ball, where as I just spent over £500 (About $650) on a helmet that could potentially break in its first outing or I need to pay to get it recertified regularly. MLS being a pay to play league is really good for the teams in the league, if the best teams in Europe could break away and make a league without relegation they would go for it, but the fans wouldn't allow it. The Pay to Play formula has allowed 7 of the 10 richest sports teams to be NFL teams. so i don't see why the MLS teams wouldn't follow in the future, especially with Football (Association) being more popular around the world.
a draw isnt a bad thing. 8/10 times a draw is a good result for a worse team. not losing and basically winning a point when ur expected to lose is a great achievement, it gives smaller teams excitement and makes a league more interesting when a big team drops points
For commercial breaks... NFL players do not have endorsements on their uniforms. When you look at soccer around the world, they have endorsements on their jerseys. There are also ads lined up around the field, including digital boards. The ads are constant. The idea that networks, or corporations, don't see value in soccer is a myth. Do they value it as high as the NFL, or NBA, etc. Maybe not, but if the sport were more popular, they'd be clamoring for their name to be the one on the team's jersey, or a spot on one of the boards around the field.

The differences between both LEAGUE & UNION are both very similar Rugby Football Codes but individually their Laws &/or Rules are very completely different also depending on the Number of Players that they both do have per team,
(1 ONE) Rugby League Football has just only (13 Thirteen) Players per team with (26 Twenty-Six) Players out on the playing field with somewhere between (6 & 10) Substitutes as in Substitution Players as Reserve &/or Replacement Players all on the Bench.
(2 TWO) Rugby Union Football has just only (15 Fifteen) Players also per team with (30 Thirty) Players out on the playing field also with somewhere between (6 & 10) Substitutes as in Substitution Players as Reserve &/or Replacement Players all on the Bench as well too of course.
I believe rugby union has a big head start over league in popularity in the US. A lot of colleges/universities have rugby union clubs, there are local clubs outside schools, and even Major League Rugby. Alternately, I have heard much less about rugby league in the US.

Hm, people claiming Football Soccer is boring because it's "low scoring" or "slow" always makes me think that they're probably just watching bad, slow games with unskilled players. Which makes sense as it's a vicious cycle - the game is slow and boring because not much is invested into it, so not many people watch it, so not much gets invested into it, creating a spiral of the game getting worse.
Luckily the USA had some breakout talents that made people start paying attention.
Alot of the USA national team players are already playing in major leagues in Europe. Some even at major clubs and ofcourse some in some lower clubs. It wasnt like that like 10 years ago. Only a few American players played in Europe back then.
I think gridiron (American football) will remain the main game in America.

If the US insists on adverts, then there is a way to do it: For a live game it is initially shown live, then if there is a corner, free kick, goal kick or throw-in, quick ads are shown and a short delay in the live action is introduced. Short ads stop 'channel flipping' and still keep the attention on the game without revenue loss.

In 1994 the world cup was also in the USA. I don't think it will be such a party on the streets like in Germany at the UEFA Euro 2024, because there will be less people interested in it. Hope the world cup will bring that a little bit more to the USA as well. Sure it helps that it will be organized together with Mexico and Canada.

People are worried that they take regular season games to Usa. Example La Liga maybe need that money from Usa so they might host games on Usa soil. But in England, Germany and Italy people will oppose that.
I'm split on USA football - on the one hand I love to see the growth of football into a country that misses out on the best sport in the world. On the other hand USA will dominate globally if it takes off and I don't want to see that.

US, Mexico, and Canada are hosting the 2026 World Cup. Most games. Especially most of the knockout rounds will be in America. However there is concern due to how the Copa America this year was handled in the US. Sure the US Soccer Federation did not organize the tournament, but from an outside POV the 2026 WC has people concerned.
In England we played the US in a world cup game about 10 years ago maybe? Anyway, there was an ad break that shouldint have happens that coindiced with England scoring. so people saw England with the ball- then there was an ad break for about 20 seconds - then they come back to see England celebrating.
