Good job Lou on filming this rare Canadian ford! It truly is a beautiful car in the stunning red and white! Good for Kerry for finding the car like he had that is so great!been a big fan of the 59 fords and Meteors myself and I’m lucky enough to own one of each! Such great looking cars and a lot of fun!
Hi bob haygarth, Thank you for the kind words, as that's always appreciated. You have some cool cars too, and you hit the nail on the head as the cars are "a lot of fun!" :-) Lou
Greetings Lou. You always seem to find the rare and unusual classic cars! Gorgeous and RARE! I'm pretty sure Ford used those wheel covers on the Galaxie as well as the Montcalm...figuring no one would know, or care :)
Impressive moustache and stylish hat. I like the car, too ! The tissue box is a worthwhile option that needs to be rediscovered by automobile manufacturers everywhere.
Hi Andrew Graham, Ahhh the tissue box. Good point. For the large family SUV's you would think this would be a must, or even the paper towel bar dispenser for those minivans with kids with the easily detachable trash can for easy unloading from the last drive thru fast food restaurant. Ok, I might be overthinking this one, :-) Lou
Rare to find one so far south of the border. I've been learning about the 1950s Canadian car market in recently but information & TH-cam videos are surprisingly scarce. The trim on 1955-56 Monarchs is particularly attractive. Thanks for this rare review & I hope to see more Canadian cars in the future. This video was a real treat, thanks Lou.
My dad had a 1959 Meteor. I don't know the series but it was a lesser one than this Rideau 500. It was a gorgeous car, black in colour and the first automatic that I was ever in. I was 12 at the time. This brings back so many memories. We had a 1954 Meteor Niagara before this one.
The Rideau 500 was one notch below the Montcalm. It had a little less dash bright work and a different roof with a wraparound rear window. That’s what I have 😊
What a interesting car! Its so strange, in a cool way, to see that these cars where perfectly normal back in the time... thats just amazing i think. Thanks for the video!

I think the reason Canada had some of it's "own" car models was due to a US-CANADA trade agreement called "The Auto Pact"....it essentially was a deal that if the US manufacturers made a certain number of cars IN Canada there would be no duty on US cars shipped to Canada.

I was waiting for the top to fold away into the trunk Lou LOL. I always got a kick out of Canadian cars being a tad different than US with names and trims but same engines. And especially on the Pontiac using Chevy drivetrain.
Nice Meteor. The purple lights were marketed as anti-glare lights. The best way to hook them up was with a separate switch and they gave just enough light so you wouldn't be fumbling in the dark getting dressed, lol.
What a unique car this is! I thought it was a Ford but never heard of this car name till.you said it was from Canada then I figured it was a different name. Great colors too!
Unbelievable.... a 59 Montclair Metor Rideau, a Canadian Version of the American Ford Fairlane/Galaxie Family, as another Poster Said, you had the Canadian Version Pontiac, 59 Dodge's with 59 Plymouth Rear Ends, Canadian Version Dumont's, from the American Chevy Chevelle, Mercury Pickup Truck, Canadian Version of the Dodge Trucks Known as Fargo Trucks. What Else did I Miss in Canadian Version of American Cars Sold Only in Canada?
Just something I never hear about the 59 is the T bird roof line and the sterling silver tread in the seat covers . Thanks for the memories of my all black 59 ford . Sure wish I had it today.
The Montcalm was to the Meteor what the Galaxie was to Ford. And, as such, they shared the same trunk lid lock, so of necessity the Fairlane/Rideau 500 trim was retained (you'll recall the first "0" of "500" covered the lock).

two seconds before you said the sound could put babies to sleep I noticed the same thing, he could sell that sound easily as a relaxing method for older men also, brought me right back to those sleeping on road trip days. I probably couldnt drive that car at night,, lol
Thank you .... particularly interesting with the Canadian Friends And Relatives : fascinating differences from USA production ; seems like there may be a lot more Auto/Truck Gems saved from Canada’sSalvage Yards and tundras.......etc...
Lou, that door looks like an unbelievable amalgam of Naugahide and extruded aluminum! In 1958 we went to Canada and saw Mercury pick up trucks, Dodges with Plymouth front ends, and Pontiacs were called Parisiens. Really strange. By the way, Montcalm was a famous Canadian general,(admiral?)
He was a French General.. tasked with defending New France.. (present day Quebec..) he died at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759 when the British, under General James Wolfe, captured New France. Wolfe died in the battle as well. The next invasion was 16 years later in 1775 when General Richard Montgomery of the Continental Army unsuccessfully tried to capture Quebec City from the British.. he died as well, taking grapeshot to the head. Benedict Arnold participated in that battle, but unlike all those generals, he survived.. and went on to serve as military commander of Montreal, which had been captured successfully. Anyways, back to montcalm.. he may have died in battle, but unlike all those others, he atleast had a car named after him!
@@MK-fc2hnThe Plains of Abraham? New France? I had a French Canadian Grandfather (a Mountie) but never heard of these places. Thanks for the history lesson.
Canadian dealers served smaller populations than American dealers. Meteors were sold by Canadian Lincoln Mercury dealers. Ford dealers sold a downgraded Mercury called the Monarch. Canadian Chrysler dealers were once divided into Chrysler-Plymouth-Fargo Truck and Dodge-De-Soto-Dodge Truck dealers. And in Canada, Pontiacs shared platforms with Chevrolets. The GM dealer networks were Chevrolet-Oldsmobile and Pontiac-Acadian-Beaumont-Buick-GMC Trucks (Cadillacs were sold by both networks)
Just a note about several of the cars you had that came with the optional spot light/lights. The Police and taxi vehicles were usually the full size Model for GM , FORD and Chrysler back when the the apartment craze didn't take off because houses were still cheap as a multiple of your income . When homes had a long fontage it was normal to see the address painted on the curb by the driveway ramp but that didn't always happen in every town or suburbs. House numbers were tough to read at night from a distance for the taxi or the Police car checking a home after a call. My guess is that in order to help pay for the spot lights requested on Fleet buys it was made an Options on that same full size Model. Prior to FORD making Fleet sales only in the late 1990's for the Crown Victoria to the Police , I wanted to by one and saw the Option list that included the Police package for performance and the Taxi package with the rubber floor covering and heavy duty vinyl seats , radio delete, HD battery and Alternator and wiring harness for add-on . Based on the number of Movies I've seen dealing with the pre-1960's, Taxi's and Police cars had spotlights that were mostly used for checking an address . In the last 1960's i saw the Hand-Held spot lights used by taxis where the driver owned it and it plugged into the cigarette lighter socket . I only point his out because many buyers today are way too young to know why those lights were on the cars as an Option which would have caused FORD to lose money on each sale by the cost form making each unit and custom holes near the A-pillar.

What’s the engine displacement? In 1964 I bought a used 1959 Rideau 500 convertible for $500. It had the 303hp Edsel 361 ci V8 in it. I put Thrush mufflers in it. Cruising in Toronto at night with the top down was way cool. It sounded and felt like a boat.

It’s hard to say what this particular model had since they were available in the United States with either sixes or V-8’s. My 59 Galaxy came with the largest V-8 which was the 352 at 300 hp.
I had a 59 Meteor Rideau with a 332 V8 and you have 1960's valve covers and as for the engine who knows what you have? The Meteor used the same style valve covers and air cleaner as Ford but instead of teal green for the 332 we had a metallic gray engine block and black valve covers. The 361 Edsel V8 was our only other V8 engine option and it could be equipped with a 223 six cylinder as well. Ford offered the 223 six, 292, 332, and 352. If you had the 352 Thunderbird V8 it was painted a dark blue including the air cleaner. As for hub caps Meteor had a unique hub cap with the Meteor Star and those are possibly Ford on your Montcalm. I'm still looking to see what the Montcalm typically had.

The engine looks newer than 1959 by the PCV hose because the 331 have black rocker covers that were rounded on the top like the 352 Tbird engine or 430 Lincoln option enigine. That air intake is much like the 1961 Tbird but the style seems more like a 1963 FE 390 . That Montcalm was a mid-year Badge just like the Fairlane 500 with the Galaxie trim option. The Meteor used the Rideau 500 which gave it the Montcalm trim. Later on the Galaxie became its own model as did the Montcalm in Canada. If he likes odd ball cars he should have looked around in Alberta for the Meteor version of the Ranchero that was under the Niagara badge . Sales for the FORD and Meteor version from Oakville were not good in 57 with a total of just over 700 . The Meteor ranchero was axed just at the start of the 58 production in 1957 which was a good move as auto sale dropped and the VW's version were popular . Only 52 of the 1958's were built while just 12 had the optional V8. The good news for restoring one is that the Meteor Niagara wagons used the same side trim while the rear was still a FORD and didn't change in 58 other than the new quad headlight and fenders . The bad news is that the grill area was unique to the Meteor version and with just 52 made , I'd buy a bad body with the whole front end before a solid body with no front end since the odds of finding any of the other 51 that weren't crushed for scarp will be tough . www.oldcarscanada.com/2010/04/1957-8-meteor-ranchero.html Check out the 58 Meteor Ranchero front .
When the '59s came out, neither Ford nor Meteor had the squared-off "Galaxie" roofline. Even the hardtops had the "Fairlane" style "C" pillar. I'd be curious as to when the "Galaxie" style roof came out with the Meteor, I assume it was sometime during the middle of the 59 model year (perhaps the same time that the Galaxie was introduced?). Do those cars have a special model name? Gorgeous car, by the way...
chana when ford introduced the square thunderbird roofline on the 59 fords which was introduced halfway through 59 production the ford was renamed fairlane 500 galaxie and the meteor was renamed Rideau 500 Montcalm so yes both the ford and the meteor were a special model hen they got this roofline.i own both.

something is weird on this Meteor, they made a Montcalm and a Rideau 500, but not a Montcalm Rideau???? somebody added the extra nameplate, but I don't know which one???
well, it's odd, but it's correct, which freaks me out cause I thought I knew all of these Canadian Models, but I've found other Rideau 500 Montcalms.....but only in 1959....my 1961 is just a Montcalm
Osborn when ford introduced the galaxie and changed the roof they kept the fairlane 500 name and so they’re called fairlane 500 galaxie. The same thing happened to the meteor they added Montcalm when they changed the roof and so they are called Rideau 500 Montcalm i hope this clears things up lol
...So METEOR was the Canadian division of Ford ? I thought I had seen Canadian Mercurys' -but perhaps they were actually made by 'Meteor' then ? They even out-chromed the American Fords from '59 ! Decoration everywhere !!
I'm walking past this Ford and I'm looking and all of a sudden I stop and say to myself....wait a minute somethings different....for me to video and share a car like this is like finding a treasure :-)
Lou Costabile ...Yes some of those Canadian (well I'll call them 'Fords') are pretty spectacular and I am just glad you did film it. -Hey Lou, if you ever get the chance to film a 1960 Mercury, I'd love to see that too ! Not sure if you have featured one of these yet ? Thanks again. = )
MungoidHen Canadian Mercury's were called Monarchs & had slightly different trim from the American versions. They had identical engine options & like Ford/Meteor were essentially stylistic changes. If you want to get complicated then look at Canadian Pontiac's & Dodges, they really totally different.

If you look closely, there is a second straight piece of chrome where the "fin" bulges outward and it too goes straight to the back of the car. Some Meteors had that section two-toned, something like the Flo-Tone option on late '50s Mercurys
Lou what's better than awesome? Lou remember that rap music song & video by mc hammer you can't touch this? Well that's exactly & just what he meant. The cars of the 1950's,60's,70's & 80's era mostly your luxury land liners & land yachts were the real cars back then to this present day &the future the auto makers and manufacturers all the big 3 knew how to build &create them, that also includes the muscle cars as well.... Hi Ivan, Back in my dating days I remember a few girls I was trying to get to know, and they reminded me of that MC Hammer song "You can't touch this!" :-) Lou
Maybe so, but it gave Canadian Lincoln-Mercury dealers a lower-priced car to sell. Canadian Ford dealers had a "copy" of the Mercury called Monarch to give them a medium-priced offering in the showroom

well, it's odd, but it's correct, which freaks me out cause I thought I knew all of these Canadian Models, but I've found other Rideau 500 Montcalms.....but only in 1959....my 1961 is just a Montcalm
On Rideau/Fairlane 500s. the first "0" in "500" covered the trunk lock. It was easier to change the side trim than the rear trim
Im in South Africa, looking for a front windscreen and radiator automatic for 1959 Ford Galaxie 500
Hi Prani, eBay? Lou
@@loucostabile ok will check,thanks
...So METEOR was the Canadian division of Ford ?
If I see a good one, I'll see if the Owner and I can do a video :-)
Thanks man. And I know you will find a good one too = )
MungoidHen Canadian Mercury's were called Monarchs & had slightly different trim from the American versions. They had identical engine options & like Ford/Meteor were essentially stylistic changes. If you want to get complicated then look at Canadian Pontiac's & Dodges, they really totally different.
Ford Fairlane 1959 WOW
Glad to receive a "WOW" from you Teniete Danielshon :-) Hope you see many more cars on this TH-cam Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
@@loucostabile greetings from Mèxico !
I thought he said it had more chrome than the American 59 galaxie?? I doesn'n't have any more than any of my 59 Fords....

If you look closely, there is a second straight piece of chrome where the "fin" bulges outward and it too goes straight to the back of the car. Some Meteors had that section two-toned, something like the Flo-Tone option on late '50s Mercurys
They don't make em like that anymore
You're right.
303 has one of these
Ok, I'll ask, what is "303"? Lou
Very nice car. Not exist in France.
Hi Breit Rolo, Glad you enjoy this nice one :-) Welcome to the Channel and I hope you see many more cars you'll enjoy, Lou
It’s just a copy of a ford
I understand why you say that.
Maybe so, but it gave Canadian Lincoln-Mercury dealers a lower-priced car to sell. Canadian Ford dealers had a "copy" of the Mercury called Monarch to give them a medium-priced offering in the showroom
Ford couldn't keep up with the styling of the GM cars in the late 50's and early 60's.
I totally disagree tom fords looked hot if not hotter than gm products during that time frame
there was a reason more Fords were sold in 59 , Chevy's had the coolest dash but that was about it .
