I used to videotape NY weddings. All ethnic groups. At the Greek wedding the old men were hobbling on their walkers and canes, but when the traditional music started they transported back in time. Knees to the ground, a slap on the floor, a spin and back up again. Amazing.

Long years ago, when I was a college student, there was a place one the hill, a diner. The owner was Greek, and every once in a while, he would break out into this dance. We all loved it!

I've read the book. I still remember what Zorba the Greek talked about. When I studied the darkroom classes in college, I had a dream to visit the beautiful islands with my cameras. I dreamed about Crete, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Ionian Islands. I still have several books on Greek Islands. If I need an utopian dream, I open and read and read.

This is not a slight to you. Some silly childish fools will joke about these tow being gay, or some stupid idea like that. It's nothing of the sort. This is a coming of age story, in the "classic ancient Greek tradition, the dance of the warriors, the dance for men a Greek comedy, or tragedy, depending on the way you look at it. A man can love another man, purely, without any connotation of sexuality, father and son, brother, and brother, comrade to comrade. Zorba was trying to tell the school boy scholar what living was really all about, what you can't learn at Oxford. The greeks were among the toughest, most fierce warriors on earth 2400 years ago, and have proven their manhood time, and again. Anthony Quinn was a Mexican Genius who created this character in his mind, as well as by script. Zorba is a deeply flawed, but deeply lovable character. He represents the hard nosed fun loving greek warrior and dreamer who sees success just around every corner. This movie is so deep in so many ways, it's impossible to describe in a few words. I miss them all terribly.
Most people think of this song as the pinnacle of Greek music and think that this song put Greece on the map. Yes Zorbas represents the all out, not caring, love for life Greek spirit that is deeply rooted in our culture, contrasting with Kazatzakis's character who is a man that gives most of his attention to literature and contrary to Zorbas likes to remain composed, always have control and tends to keep his feelings on the low side. Also, the love between the two men is indeed a pure friendship type of love but even if it was sexual (which it wasn't) it wouldn't matter because ancient Greek culture didn't care to shame homosexuality and believed love comes in all shapes and forms (condemning homosexuality is a christian concept).
Always makes me think of my father. 37 years after he went on, this song reminds me of that wonderful joy and happiness he had for life. Always telling me of how we should go back to Crete. Thank you for uploading this.

When I studied the darkroom classes in college,
I had a dream to visit the beautiful islands with my cameras.
I dreamed about Crete, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Ionian Islands.
I still have several books on Greek Islands.
If I need an utopian dream, I open and read and read.

I don't know what young people today think about this song, or the movie which is truly a masterpiece of high art. Brilliant performances all around. Apologies to my gay friends,. This is not a slight to you. Some silly childish fools will joke about these tow being gay, or some stupid idea like that. It's nothing of the sort. This is a coming of age story, in the "classic ancient Greek tradition, the dance of the warriors, the dance for men a Greek comedy, or tragedy, depending on the way you look at it. A man can love another man, purely, without any connotation of sexuality, father and son, brother, and brother, comrade to comrade. Zorba was trying to tell the school boy scholar what living was really all about, what you can't learn at Oxford. The greeks were among the toughest, most fierce warriors on earth 2400 years ago, and have proven their manhood time, and again. Anthony Quinn was a Mexican Genius who created this character in his mind, as well as by script. Zorba is a deeply flawed, but deeply lovable character. He represents the hard nosed fun loving greek warrior and dreamer who sees success just around every corner. This movie is so deep in so many ways, it's impossible to describe in a few words. I miss them all terribly.

Most people think of this song as the pinnacle of Greek music and think that this song put Greece on the map. Yes Zorbas represents the all out, not caring, love for life Greek spirit that is deeply rooted in our culture, contrasting with Kazatzakis's character who is a man that gives most of his attention to literature and contrary to Zorbas likes to remain composed, always have control and tends to keep his feelings on the low side. Also, the love between the two men is indeed a pure friendship type of love but even if it was sexual (which it wasn't) it wouldn't matter because ancient Greek culture didn't care to shame homosexuality and believed love comes in all shapes and forms (condemning homosexuality is a christian concept).
This is what freaked the Persians out at Thermopylae.
Always makes me think of my father.
37 years after he went on, this song reminds me of that wonderful joy and happiness he had for life.

I have always loved this. I come back every once in a while to see those two lovely actors. Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. But don't forget the lovely women actors in this movie. It was hard hitting in its day. Lila Kordrova and Irene Papas. Magnificent cast.
