@@joecater894 the sell off of council houses was a con it was done to reduce funding of councils from central government so they cut taxes for the rich otherwise they would allowed councils to rebuild their stock of rented properties,the same government abolished the rent cap and allowed rents to rocket also most of council houses that were purchased have now been bought by landlords who rent these properties at eye watering rates,tories do nothing but harm to the working class you can’t rewrite history to suit your narrative!

Cyclists have been forced to behave in such ways because of the absolutely terrible behaviour of motorists. Motorists are massive killers, cycling is improving health and preventing severe costs to the nhs. Cost benefit analyses show that the only form of transport that actually has a net financial benefit to society is cycling.

What Matthew Parris might not have appreciated, regarding the piece about cyclists in Derbyshire, was that a few years earlier a local motorcyclist was badly injured by a cable deliberately strung across the road, between two trees. His piece brought the memory of that incident brightly back, causing many considerable pain and resurgence of the fear of repeat incidents. I’m sure he meant no harm but it was an unfortunate reference at the time. I enjoyed the interview and entirely agree with his observations on what many of the Tory party have become, they are indeed unpalatable and would be more honest practitioners if they stood under the UKIP banner, though I doubt they are able to see it in themselves.

The U.K. Tories have always been a Nasty party (since PM Margaret Thatcher “Mad Cow Zero” ) they have just dropped the pretense that they care.
For anyone who was alive in 1979 the Tories were always the nasty party and have never changed, it’s just that today journos only report what they are told to, and do no original thinking, they’ve now been told to focus on this. This performative cruelty has been in place since 2008, but as it has now impacted Mr Paris it becomes the story.

@@sawtooth808 I am not sure that I would count Enoch Powell. I actually have a lot of respect for Enoch Powell. I think he had an Achilles heel with race and neloiberalism. He also quit the Conservative Party in 1974 and became an Ulster Unionist so he is not very representative. I chose 1975 when Margaret Thatcher became Leader. That was when neoliberalism and back stabbing became mainstream.

I'm not surprised cyclists are miserable. They're seconds from death most of the time. I can't imagine what makes someone cycle on roads as a leisure activity. Looks insanely stressful to me.
