Back in the early 80's, when this was originally released, the band received an honour from a native American organisation for highlighting the plight of their ancestors.

Lol, the lyrics are a bunch of stereotypes. I love maiden but if you think the song lyrics of a British metal band accurately portray the American west, you might as well watch reruns of F Troop for your US history knowledge.

@@mr.e8432 THis is already a better way to introduce a genocyde to the masses. A lot of fans have been into native and amerindians history because of Maiden.

Started jammin to Maiden when I got to middle school in early 90s. I grew up in the satanic panic and my dad was trying to prevent me from listening to metal because of that. Some Iron Maiden songs like "666, the number of the beast" and Holy Smoke were retaliatory songs in response to the satanic panic.

Oh well !! ..They opened up and slowly and slowly people started standing up .. and by the end of the first song .. The House erupted !!! .. As a Maiden fan since the early '80's, I've always enjoyed their music. They are spectacular in concert. I always try to see them when they're within a 6 hour drive of where I live. Most of the songs are written by Maiden founder, bassist Steve Harris, some in collaboration with band members. They delve into history and literature, which is really great. It's what led me into reading and learning about the influences behind the songs.

Everything about this song is iconic, from the lyrics to vocals to bassline to guitar solo. But what gets me the most are the drums. That pause and then doogla dish! Doogla dish! Followed later by doogla doogla doogla doogla do! You can’t listen to the song without doing some air drums at that point.
And that’s why I love it and Maiden in general: every instrument is represented. You can hear every member play, unlike other bands where their songs are primarily singer and guitar, with the rhythm section kind of just in the background. And even on guitar, with two leads, there’s usually two separate solos. And a bass solo to boot.

Oddly enough, the person who wrote this shit (your words), is none other than the much vaunted bass guitarist you mentioned, Steve Harris!!! Steve wrote the majority of IM songs in collaboration with Bruce Dickinson, so there's no coincidence that the overwhelming majority of IM songs contain strong Bass riffs and runs!!! If you want to hear a song where the bass is really prominent, try listening to "Aces High"....will knock your socks off!!!

The facial expressions during the listening says it all :) I remember my first time listening to Iron Maiden as it was yesterday. I was about 7 or 8 and the only music i had really heard was my parents music in the car or at home. So one time we went on a trip to my uncle's house and he asked me if i wanted to hear some cool music that he liked. So he put on the album The Number Of The Beast and now 26 years later i have been on Iron Maiden 10+ times and have 3 tattos. Steve Harris on one arm. Bruce dickinson on the other and Eddie with the puppet devil on my back :)

Number of the Beast is a great album. It was the first with Bruce Dickinson on vocals and it's the record where they moved beyond quasi-punk and into what would later be dubbed classic metal. I'd say Maiden is Maiden. Harris tried out quite a few musicians and singers before they got their breakthrough ca. 1980, he is famously ruthless when it comes to who gets to be in his band. Murray, McBrain, Smith et.al. wouldn't be in Maiden if they weren't superb musicians and contributors. He's a manager, Harris, very clever. He wanted a certain sound, a certain level of performance, and didn't stop until it was to his satisfaction. Took him six or seven years, but listen to their first two albums, not to mention the rest of their 80's output, and what you hear is the result of stubborness, hard work, plus of course a genius at work.

How did Iron Maiden sneak past me? Did I just think they were a head-banger band and so didn't bother to listen? My huge loss! But discovering them late is better than never. I am in absolute awe of their unique powerhouse performances, musically and lyrically pulsating with history, art, intellect and philosophy. Genius! Beyond exciting. The galloping bass, the harmony guitars and Air Raid Siren Bruce Dickinson are probably the three trademarks of a Maiden classic. My recommendation for a follow-up would be Aces High.
EDIT: A good "off camera" Maiden song for a musical epic would be "To Tame a Land". The lyrics are about the sci-fi novel "Dune", so they are a bit impenetrable if you aren't familiar with the book... but musically it's one of their better epics.

This song strikes a special chord with me, as within the last few years I learned about my heritage as a member of the Lipan Apache tribe.
During the late 1800’s into the early 1900’s, the Apache and Comanche were among the last tribes holding out against the US government and their forced relocation plans. The US government had succeeded in assassinating many other Native American leaders, forcibly mutilating the genitals of women to keep them from reproducing, murdering the elders, crippling many communities by getting them addicted to alcohol, and sending the surviving tribes to live on inhospitable lands (reservations) no one else wanted so they could slowly die off.
“Run to the hills, run for your lives” HURTS to listen to because I know from my Mom’s side the Lipan Apache were forced by the US Army’s Cavalry (“Soldiers in Blue in the barren waste”) into the mountains under siege for months, with many Apache dying or resorting to cannibalism until we finally capitulated and were forced to surrender. A little girl was forced to watch her own family members eat each other alive out of desperation, and that little girl ended up marrying and her descendants are now my Mom’s side of the family.
We didn’t know we even were Apache until recently due to the US Government listing us as Spanish on the census back in the day in an attempt to erase the official numbers of the tribe. A Paper Genocide as I understand it’s called.
Damn does this song make me feel so sad to listen to...
