    Picked one of these up on eBay recently. I know you spoke of modifying the handle yourself but the knife connection handles really make this knife great. They add material near the top and bottom where it's desperately needed

      I've had my Nightstalker in some seriously questionable logs that would have cracked 1095. The rangers weren't built for comfort, that's for sure, but they're the toughest knives I've ever used.

    • @Ruger44Redhawk
      @Ruger44Redhawk 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @jimbusmaximus4624 And the best part, in my opinion, is they are affordable. I don't have the money to drop on customs. Trust me, I'd love a Chris Reeve Green Beret or Pacific and the like. So, I was able to get the RD6, RD7 and RD9 for the price of a custom. These are tools for work, not art for collection.

      @@Ruger44Redhawk yeah it's a shame they're no longer available tho. The options today are very slim. I love the Chris Reeve Green Beret but on my salary it's just not a realistic option. And honestly I'd probably trust my RD6 in a life or death scenario over ANY other blade. Except maybe Justin Gingrich's signature series line lol

    The grain in that almond wood is gorgeous, would make a nice handle on something like a puukko. Oh, for large knives with exposed tags I find it easier to feather stick by hammering the point into a stump and pulling the wood back along the edge, might be worth trying out next time. Thanks for the video.

    I used to have one. Had an rd 7 also. Sold them years ago. If I’d known they would’ve discontinued………oh well. You should try out the silky nata hatchet. They used to be like 70 bucks or less. Cost about a bill now. They come in chisel and v grind. I recommend v grind. Great handle that is removable. Not premium steel but used to be great budget chopper/batoner.I made simple kydex sleeve for mine. Great video. Keep up the good work sir.

    The DG stands for dark gray. The DG coating was more durable than the black. They also used the best US manufactured 5160 available on these. Unless you bought the Bush model, those were 1095 but were thinner stock. Awesome blade, you'll seriously be amazed once you grind them scales down! Changes the entire knife.

    If you buy custom handles from the knife connection. Makes for a way better feel in hand. I absolutely love mine. I have two of them. I’m not a mass production guy. But this one is my go to.

    That is probably the worst blocky handle for me that I have ever used....With some modification of the handle it can at least be made to be useable...I thought it would chop a bit better too but sometimes it just don't work out that way....They really should bring back that blade into their line up but I am sure they just want to make money at this point.....Nice vid....Good stuff....

  • @dlrmon1
    @dlrmon1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I had the old Ontario RD6 and thought the handle was to small. I believe the scales were the same as the RD9 (not sure). Most of the big knives back then were blocky, what I was expecting you to say something about the room available for your finger’s...Most of my Ontario’s are 8-10 years old, I’ve never experienced any problems with exception my lasted purchase of the Rat 6 in S35vn. Seems heat treated well for a bigger blade but the fit and finish sucked...

    • @peterbiltknifeguy

      @dlrmon1 OH yeah those did look nice too, were they also USA made?
      My SK5 has the American 🇺🇸 but I can't read the tag anymore its worn out. .
      I never bought that series of blades , they looked cool esp the big one . I also didn't mind that they started using 420hc, it can be really good steel. My Gerber Prodigy is 420hc USA steel and I honestly beat the tar out of it over the years. It's the knife I always use when I don't want to damage a nice one and the edge has been great. Of course it has my own profile though 😉

      @peterbiltknifeguy it seems over hardened in my opinion. It's still a nice blade. Very small edge chips right in the middle. Never batoned it. Did some stabbing on an interior door to see breach capabilities. Maybe I hit a staple.
      Wouldn't expect chips from a staple but you never know

  • @iscariotproject
    @iscariotproject 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    the handle has larger problems then being blocky its made in mind of the maker who is a giant mountain of a man,you will find sanding does very little to fix it unless you got xxxl hands,also the 5160 will rust from just being exposed by the air so dont remove the coatign im not kidding its prone to pitting rust its like having invisible worms eating the steel.i dont know where Ontario sourced this steel because i got other 5160 that doesnt rust that bad.
