Common Waterbuck Video (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) In The Kruger National Park Around Letaba & Olifants Rest Camps
The Common Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a well know antelope species distributed through a large part of Africa, and there are currently around 6,000 - 7,000 in the Kruger National Park - as per the last public animal count (Census). As their name suggests, the Common Waterbuck prefer to not stray far away from water courses - be it rivers, dams or waterholes. The Common Waterbuck is a lot more common in the central to northern parts of the Kruger National Park. They are vulnerable to predation from Lion, Leopard & Hyena, although their musky smell deters predators normally. For example, a Leopard would rather hunt a smaller meal like a Duiker, compared to getting an almost free meal from a Waterbuck. The Common Waterbuck are really impressive antelope, and the males especially are really beautiful.
Distinctive White Ring: One of the most striking features of the Common Waterbuck is the white ring encircling its rear, which contrasts sharply with its dark brown coat. This white ring serves as a visual marker, aiding in identifying individuals within a herd.
Water Dependence: As the name suggests, Common Waterbucks are highly dependent on water sources. They are commonly found near rivers, lakes, and marshes, where they can readily access water. They are known to be excellent swimmers and will readily take to the water when threatened.
Territorial Behaviour: Male Waterbucks are territorial animals and establish and defend territories using various means, including scent marking and vocalisations. They often form bachelor groups or live solitary lives, defending their territories from other males. These territories typically encompass prime grazing areas near water sources, essential for their survival.
In the background you can hear bird calls that can be heard around Common Waterbuck, or close by at least (in general).

Such an interesting looking animal if I'm honest. It's coat just puts me off, in the sense, it confuses my brain that that's actually a buck.
