    Thank you. I am a music teacher, developing virtual content for my students to access asynchronously. I am looking to use green screen videos to better engage students and encourage them to watch the entire video! Your instruction is very helpful in getting me started. I can't wait to try this out!

    Great video Salma - love the how to/explainer. Here's two things I didn't realise.
    1) Masking. I film in a small space and I used to fill the frame with my green screen so consequently, my talking head videos were REALLY close. I only just realised (after 6 months) that I can use a mask to crop out the white walls and the doorway etc, so that it only shows green - means I can put the camera further away.
    2) You can stack the Ultra key preset. So if you are really struggling to eliminate the green, use one Ultra Key preset - pick a shade of green. Then hide the first preset so you can see the green screen again and on a second Ultra key preset you can pick another shade of green. This has been working well for me to remove shadows (so it's one ultra key for highlights and one ultra key for shadows0
    Keep those videos coming! Love the glimpse into the process.

    Hi Salma. Thank you for creating very useful videos for new content creators like me. I’m setting up my green screen studio in a very, very small room. I’m also about 2 feet away from my green screen and I want to know how far are you from your camera. By the way, since I’m just starting out, I’m using my mobile phone. Just like what you said in one of your videos, “no excuses.” And so, I’m doing just that. No excuses. I need to start using whatever resources I have at hand. Btw, I’m doing a standing shoot and I’m just an arm length from my phone camera. My green screen is a bit small. It’s 5 ft wide and 6 ft tall. Any suggestions on my scenario? Thanks a lot.

    Hi Salma, enjoying your videos, very well planned and thought out. I'm wondering why you emphasise not using a smartphone - just because of video quality or are there settings that will directly affect the ability to chromakey? I use a smartphone to film all my videos in 1080p, but I have an expensive smartphone...

    • @SalmaJafri
      @SalmaJafri  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! To be honest my husband is my video editor and I consulted with him on this video. He told me that there's no big rule you can't use a smartphone but that the results would be better with a proper camera. Editing a green screen video might become a nightmare if the footage is shot with a lower quality camera. That said, feel free to experiment! I would love to hear any workaround you might have :) Thank you for the kind comments!

    Thank you Salma. I really enjoy your teaching style and presence and your knack for explaining all this in such simple terms (well sort of- chromakey thing I have to go back and understand), So the challenge for me is the lighting and setup as well as the audio- Can't seem to eliminate the shadows despite using a 3-point lighting with light boxes and an uplight for the background.
    Q: If you are eliminating the green screen background completely, in your editing software why are you ironing and clamping and making sure that there are no wrinkles etc. since you are substituting the color background. Did not understand this part.

    • @SalmaJafri
      @SalmaJafri  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gayathri Shylesh Great question! The answer to ironing out the wrinkles is because wrinkles cause different shades of green, thus making it harder to key out the background cleanly. Having it all one shade of green makes it easier to remove.
      If you're still getting shadows with 3 point lighting, try adjusting the lights at a greater than 45 degree angle and moving them further away from the green screen. By doing so you'll cause the shadow to be formed outside the frame of your shot.
      Also try to move further away from the green screen for best results.

      Kannan Makino Take another look, there's some free audio devices mentioned such as the earbuds that came with your phone and also a low cost mic ($20). You can use your smartphone to film, so no need to buy a camera. The video starts with $0 spent on gear and equipment and moves up from there to cater to everyone's budget and tastes.

    Most challenging part is to face the lights.
    I shot my first greenscreen in 2015, it was a totally DIY setup. Glued some green paper to the wall, placed a couple of bulbs in shoe boxes and got going. Back then I found it very hard to film for more than fifteen minutes with the bulbs blaring in my face. Right now I have a custom made portable background which I bought from Nisbet Rd. Lahore. I've screwed it to the wall. For lighting, I bought a light kit from AliExpress. I'm in a pretty good shape. But, I'm in online courses & I see that a lot of people don't show their faces in this line. I'm trying to build a bunch of courses without showing my face. Trying to get at an advantage point before indulging in fancy stuff :).

    • @SalmaJafri
      @SalmaJafri  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naeem Akram If you can get over the fear, definitely show your face! It helps build trust much faster with your audience, especially in an online course where they can't physically see you. Glad to hear you got your gear sorted :)

    I worked on a green screen for a long time before I got it to work. My main problem was getting the background to be smooth, and lighting. I finally got it to work well, but... I sometimes make so many edits because of stuttering, rambling, coughing, vomiting and badger attacks (just kidding, no vomiting or badger attacks) and other things, that I found in editing, in my video software at least, I had to apply the chroma key to each clip even though it was just a continuous speech (an educational video). So I finally scrapped the green screen, which I love, and just do my videos against my bookshelf.

    Can you make a photo your background via green screen? Will it blurry? Does it have to be a certain clarity? I'm going to try this; this might be the answer I need right now... Much thanks!

      You could, it'd have to be a really large resolution though to not pixelate when printed.

    The most challenging part is now having known that making videos using a green screen requires a decent camera. Because spending hundreds of dollars on the setup and struggling for four days in a row to make it work and finally understanding that it's about your camcorder kind of sucks. I think every personality making a video about a green screen MUST mention the importance of using at least a semi-professional camera (or an iPhone which captures 4k videos). So, what's your camera?

    Nice explanation,
    Seen your lot of video that helped me a lot, i personally recommend you to re brand your background. Try out without green screen, creat a youtube studio. It's been long time you are using this background. You can continue your purple color as your brand color. Your contents are nice but I think some creativity is missing in your videos (not content vise).....
    Real setup will create real consultant image of your personality. You can add some brand elements like:nice backdrop / bookshelf / art elements which shows your personality....
    I am randomly suggesting you ...You need to workout on that...I am from india...फिर भी मैं suggest कर रहा हु....Just kidding,😉😉..As a well wisher of your.. suggesting you any way...
