The batteries on my partial favorite AOTC R2 finally gave out.. I just love that version. Something great about those heavier astromechs too.. I have a hard time paying $16+ for this but who knows, I might if I continue to see him out and about.
So far, my favorite 3.75" R2-D2 is the one from like 15 years ago that makes sounds. They had a version with removable batteries and one that didn't. I haven't checked to see if the one without removable batteries still works, but I bet it would be a mess inside of corroded batteries.
The domes are actually quite different, paint-wise. The new one has a glossy black eye, as opposed to the matte eye on the original. It also has an unpainted panel on the back of the dome, which is actually accurate to how the dome was painted in ANH. The silver is also much more metallic now. Probably the most silver Artoo dome we've had aside from the vac-metal versions from POTF2 and TSC.
I’m a Black Series collector, but this R2 and Darth Vader from the same wave are my first 2 TVC figures. I’m glad this is a good release, but I’m not ready to open my TVC like I do with my Black Series. I got Leia the same week as the first 2 and plan to get the pipelined heroes when they release.
Vader, Stormtrooper, Leia, and R2 I have ordered at BBTS. Luke, Han, Chewie, and Obi-Wan will be coming out eventually. Now we just need a clean C-3PO and an updated version of Grand Moff Tarkin both on ANH card back.
This entire TVC wave showed up at my Walmart just a couple of days ago, so I picked up this R2 and the Stormtrooper. I do also own the Sensorscope R2 (which is why I requested the comparison). Overall, I think the scale and the shape of the dome is more accurate on the Sensorscope R2 (I think this and that Black Series figure are both based on the 2010 VC25 Sail Barge R2 mold); but Hasbro's insistence on putting dumb "play features" on R2 figures kind of ruins it. That front panel is also extremely annoying and I'm considering just gluing mine shut. Anyway, thanks for the comparison!
The legs are a different mold on the new one. They say it’s corrected. The bolts are placed differently. The two bolts are forward I believe while the old one was opposite. Which is funny because during the movies the bolts move around.
I have this R2D2 pre ordered from SAF along with leia new hope and stormtrooper to be shipped out to me the other VC R2 I have is the sensor scope one carded and a couple loose black series and force link and the 3 original R2D2 figures
Hello there, always a great review. I actually have almost every single R2 that has been released in all sizes from micromachines to the 2015, 31 inch. All that being said, out of the 3.75 R2 s I think the Power of the Force release is one of the best but the new TVC one hasn't arrived yet so I don't know but it really is hard to pick one because the original Kenner R2 will always be a favorite too. May the Force be with you.
Your mention of the Choke Hazard warning label not being displayed on this one caused me to question what standards the Toy Safety Gods use when determining whether a toy/figure needs one… the dome on this pops off, as well as the center leg, and we all know kids are prone to dismantling things (I know I sure did, way back when), so both of those parts (once removed) actually could possibly be choking hazards. I presume they rate the figure “as delivered.”
You missed the figure variant detail. 4:14 on your video clean R2 is missing a blue paint app on the square on the back of his dome. It's silver. Dirty R2 the square is painted blue. Its worth thousands! lol. Love R2
Enjoyed the video, Bossk! Just got mine in the other day and had fun comparing to the original VC149, which is really the figure that got me into collecting TVC! This is also my favorite 3.75 R2-D2 mold, but I would like them to retool the dome a little bit so the top holoprojector is on the correct panel (it should be on the panel behind where it is currently, which is a common issue for 3.75 R2s)
Great review BB! I was wondering what's the difference between this one and my Empire Strikes back Artoo... Now that I know the difference I kind of want grab one of this as well. Fun fact! For a long time my favorite Artoo was that one with the beep-boop-bop sound feature from Movie Heroes 2013. For some reason it always cheered me up when I needed.
I really like this newest version but my favorite is the retro collection (would be perfect if it was on a TCV cardback without the sticker and fake weathering). They go great next to each other MOC and loose.
The ESB version with the sensor scope is by far the best of the ones you show here, in my opinion. I've always hated the Build-A-Droid mold- the legs are way too far out from the body. The ESB one you have (based on the VC25 Sail Barge R2-D2) is a great mold with better proportions, including the curvature of the dome.
Hot take: Best R2 figure we've had is the Clone Wars version. Its not movie accurate, but it had two arms, a grappling hook, a sensor scope, a removable third leg, and removable jets, while also having the basic head and leg articulation you want from an R2 at a 3.75" scale. My perfect R2 is a movie accurate version with all those additions, maybe a couple extra like a compartment to hide a lightsaber, or the ability to swap the sensor scope for a lightsaber.
An awesome compare and contrast review as usual.......By the way, your segway music tends to be an earworm. I've lost sleep because of it--way too addictive!!!! Cheers Mate, Pjw
Great review! Great figure as well, but I do think I prefer the Last Jedi version as the paint being a lighter blue on the TVC body really sticks out to me. It doesn’t match the blue on the dome, and I really think the darker tone is what it’s supposed to be if you look at references. The drawback to the Last Jedi version is the missing paint apps of course, as he is also missing some blue on his feet. Keep up the great work!
hello bossk , I don't know if you paid attention but blue is also missing at the back of the dome on the reissue, right next to the yellow dot, I'm waiting for mine to check
I rifled through all my current R2-D2s when trying to decide if I should get more than one of this new release and did much the same thing you did. I'm curious what your thoughts are on the "shoulder" joints/spacing. Some prior R2s have the shoulder sockets that put the legs right up next to the body. The sculpt used on the new VC has a bit of space between the body and legs due to the additional material at the shoulder. The space was off-putting for me at first as I wasn't used to it because my default display R2 didn't have it. Is the spacing more accurate? Not that it's so much of a space to really be an issue either way - more of a curiosity as to which is more accurate.
I still feel like they’ve never gotten the scaling of R2 or 3PO exactly right in TVC. If you put them next to other figures 3PO is obviously small but R2 appears to be a millimeter or two too big in every modern version scale-wise.
It hurts to watch you open cardbacks lol So straight up non weekly question Bossk, Is this R2 the best option- and is this plastic gonna stay white away from sunlight? I really do want an R2, but i don't wanna replace him in a few years because he started to go yellow, i also dislike the ESB R2 because of that stupid panel, i have the droids repaint they're awful the panels.. But i really do need a proper R2 so- is this the one? or should i wait for another version? (I also wanted a TBS R2 but i recall they have scale issues)
This new “clean” R2 has the top center circle on his dome painted blue (which is accurate to R2), while the prior “dirty” R2 was missing the top center blue paint. To me, the missing top center dome blue paint on the prior R2s was totally inexcusable on Hasbro’s part. Go back and look at all your historical R2s again and you’ll see it’s like 50/50 when it comes to painting the top center circle blue. All the dirt and grimy ones were fine because I could use those in Dagobah displays, or battle of Yavin damage. But the dirty ones with the missing blue top circle just ruined it for me. Also, you forgot to point out that this new “clean” version also has blue paint stripes on the torso under the “armpit” area that was never painted before either. Just goes to show, once again, how many times Hasbro screws up the painting on our beloved figures. 🤦🏻♂️ Every single R2 released has some type of paint missing or included compared to the others. No two figures are alike…🤷🏻♂️
I found that same R2 in my GameStop the other day. It's just re release same figure from the last Jedi. Slight paint applications it. They charge $16 dollars for same figure when I got last Jedi one for less. It's crime they did that. It's the same force link one from before just without the force link in it. It's same from the galaxy of adventures assortment too. They're just repacking it un vintage card, slight paint applies make it different. And that's it. I can get pass the princess Leia action figure she's not been made lately in 20 yrs. Darth Vader is just same Vader from dark times the difference is his robe is over his armor & nothing else. I guess it's because there's piles n piles of unsold left r2d2s from the last Jedi line slash the galaxy of adventures assortment they're trying get them off the ground & sell them off again. Un vintage card back. Hasbro is committing crimes. Slash doing good things slash making bad choices. Princess Leia is pass for me.
That Empire Strikes Back Wal-Mart figure I HATE! It's a mold that been reused for many r2 units, and I hate that you can't have the middle leg retracted at the same time as the scope is DOWN. It should NOT be an either or prospect and it the dumbest "action feature" that Hasbro ever came up with.
OMG! The way you manhandled that card and ripped it opened after all the care I took to packing it!! -🤣🤣😆
haha! Let them breathe! lol
I picked up five Last Jedi R2's out of a clearance bin at a discount toy shop about 4 years ago for next to nothing. Best day of that year for me.
I've been waiting for your review. Mine came last week and I couldn't find any videos on TH-cam!!! Woohooo
Can never have too many R2's!

I just got him, best R2 I've bought in this scale ever!

Oh, thank goodness I am not the only one who opens their figures this way 🤣
I just got my R2's and it's really a great figure
Another fantastic unboxing of star wars R2-D2 keep collecting bossk bounty great video has always 👍🏻🇬🇧👍🏻
idk why but the sensor scope version of R2 will always be my favourite R2, probably because of the nod to the Kenner years.
Every Star Wars figure is a nod to the Kenner years..

Amazing how you can keep straight which figure is which. I'd need to tag them haha
😂. I had to remember which one was the BS 3.75.

Just picked this up today
I like the mechanical retractable middle leg feature.
Cute. Finally gonna get one.
Great thing about that r2 is that he can be taken apart fully.
I don't know, they all look great Tim!
This is the version we should have got took hasbro more than a year to get it right but amazing nevertheless

Yep that is accurate to ANH.
The older version, the carbon scored version, looks better in the vintage collection Luke Skywalker's X-Wing.
VC R2 = TLJ R2 = Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures R2-D2 Figure & Mini Comic
I had some of these as a kid. Ended up losing my r2d2 somewhere outside 😔
Didn’t we all lol. I remember my C-3PO went over the neighbours fence. I found him 3 years later when I went to retrieve a ball that went over 😂
3:05 I felt a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of carded collectors suddenly cried out in terror
I always thought the muddy R2 was actually from Dagobah and they just simply got the wrong film on the card back.
It’s classed as from A New Hope
The muddy grime on Dabobah R2 is completely different than the grime he has on him in other scenes of the OT movies
resurgence r2 is the only r2 for me.
Pretty sure that’s the same as the 3.75 black series version but with sand deco on the lower half.
@@BossksBounty yeah probably but i like how the sand makes the sculpting pop.
How old were you when you received your first Kenner Star Wars figures? I was 11, in 1978.
I rifled through all my current R2-D2s when trying to decide if I should get more than one of this new release and did much the same thing you did. I hadn’t noticed really so not an issue for me
I agree with you. It bothers me that the legs look a little too far apart from the body. I don't think that is film-accurate
I still feel like they’ve never gotten the scaling of R2 or 3PO exactly right in TVC. If you put them next to other figures 3PO is obviously small but R2 appears to be a millimeter or two too big in every modern version scale-wise.
I wish I could turn my head and make my centre leg pop out 😂😂😂
Hey Bossk I prefer the POTJ R2D2 Naboo escape to the POTF 2, are you shocked ? Anyway nice review.
Goddamn you, Hasbro. Just when I quit collecting modern, they pull this classic Kenner crap on me. Just can't say no to those sweet cardbacks 😍
there is no escape, they probs planned this out years ago to keep you in.
I'll just stick to my 10 dollar The Last Jedi R2D2 which is literally just this one but with slightly different paint and those accessories.
It hurts to watch you open cardbacks lol
So straight up non weekly question Bossk, Is this R2 the best option- and is this plastic gonna stay white away from sunlight?

I assume it's also the same BAD version of R2 that came in the Royal Starship Droids multipack.
TANK COMMANDER WAAAAA!
Do you have the 40th edition that came with? C3PO from the disney two pack? he should've been included too. He's a BAD. better tatooine deco.
@@agathavincent9487 Solo packaging? Super rare over here. Was a Toys r Us exclusive

It annoys me when they change paint or whatever, but keep the same number.
Never understood the spelling out of R2D2.
🥱🥱🥱
Feel like none of them have the right 'sheen' on the dome. They look too plasticy and not chrome enough
