This is a great video! Yes, I like the extra paint footage. Also like that you went through all the different phases from primer to weathering. That is very helpful to me. Many thanks!
Hello from Liepaja (somewhere in Latvia ). And yes? I do have an old kit in my collection. Right now I am restoring my old Russian gun zis-3 from Zvezda (with co-work Italeri). Nice video! I liked!
This was a great tutorial Hank. I have a couple of old kits that live on ‘the shelf of shame’, and which could really do with a makeover, and this video has prompted me to cease my disdain of these kits, and try and give them a new life. The amount of accessories and upgrades for these kits that are available now, might mean they could escape from their ignominious past, and take their place on the ‘good shelf’. Also love the laid back music on this one mate. You have a great channel Hank, and your build and tutorial videos have helped me, along with all of your subscribers, to enjoy our hobby more. Keep them coming my friend, and greetings from Australia 🇦🇺!
Was at a seminar with Mig and someone brought up repainting old kits and Mig's response was to leave your old kits and use them as examples of your progress in the hobby. I've repainted a couple old kits feel I'd always rather just start something new - unless it's fixing damage that may have occurred.
There's a lot to be said for that last comment. Everything I look at my old kits I always remember "I forgot to do that or I missed that". Anyway there's always something on the shelf to start NEW. 😅
Thanks for taking the time to show the painting process in more detail. My first ever airbrush will be arriving soon and tutorials like this are exactly what I'm looking for.
GREAT tutorial Hank. I've refurbished several of my old models and was able to try some different things. I usually just give my refurbished models away to a surprised kid at our annual model show at the Seattle Museum of Flight. It's fun to see their eyes light up with a model they weren't expecting. I also love your choice of background music and the extended painting video. I wonder, why do I seem to do my best work on old derelict models?
1:22 Ammo's Dunkelgelb seems to be more "green" than the Vallejo model Air version which is more of a "bone" colour despite them having the same RAL code. Either way, it is a very useful colour to have even if you are painting more modern AFV kits.
I have been gradually rehabbing and repairing several old (as in going on 25+ years) Tamiya models. Got through 2 or 3 before my airbrush finally showed up. Looking forward to learning how to use it and finish up the rest.
Nice refurbishment -- a great way to try a new finishing technique before you experiment on your latest work of art. Wheel rule of thumb: For soft ground fit mud to tire treads and leave wheels fairly clean; for hard surface/asphalt dirty the wheel and leave the tread fairly clean. (Did those Tamiya wheels not have nylon retainers?) Excellent demonstration!
Another idea is winter camo. Many times they used white wash or whatever white ish paint the had laying around and brushed and rolled it on in the cold so it flaked off real easy. Little hairspray, shipping fluid, or just a light touch with the airbrush can get great winter results.
Loving the slowed down painting footage Hank! It gives the viewers a bit of a chance to concentrate on what you're painting, maybe how to do it, and allows us to relax with said tasty beverage! were you shooting with a number 3 needle, or a number 2 in the airbrush?
Super tutorial. VMS has a stripper that works quite well, I'm still experimenting its best to soak the model however bottles are small liquid quantities, but reusable if you want to strip. The over spray is obviously easier and quicker. Do you control your pressure on air brush? Thanks for sharing.
Great vid Hank,I am actually thinking to do that with Takom’s Hetzer as I picked it up in the holidays of 2023,and I rushed it leaving it unfinished,so a little refurb is on the way, this also gave me a look at the thought process so Thanks, and could you ask me 1 question for a Q&A video that I am gonna do?
Love your videos. I always try to catch them when they come out. I have a question for you. When you were painting the brown with the airbrush, was there a foam around the edges or a ring of another color paint in the bowl? It might be my eyes or the way the lights hit it. it just looked kinda funny. Of course if it is paint, what color was it?
WOW! Such a nice refurbish. Sir, I know when you airbrush you are wearing a mask if you are still using the same setup from that video from I think 3 years ago.. Do you use some type of airbrush booth in conjunction with that or just a spacious area? Thanks in advance.
Which of Cremeweiß are you using? Vallejo or other unknown brands? I also repainted Older Tamiya Gepard model..I've painted just olive drab , but changed to three tone NATO colors.
I have a Bolt Action Tiger 1 which I have repainted so many times to try out new camo patterns and/or weathering products. How do you thin your paints for the airbrush? The recommended mix of 1 part water, 1 part flow improver to 3 parts paint doesn't always give me a smooth finish or even causes my airbrush to spit on occasion.
Was a driver of a 1/1 Replica of a Sd.kfz 222 Very cool, I have 3 of these models, one in Panzer Grey, one for the Afrika Korps, and another for Eastern Front late 42. Add in a Sd. Kfz 221 and some other vehicles... LOL now that I think about it I have practically 2 platoons worth. Another nice display Sprues! Edit: also could not find the stowage stuff for the 222, or did you just randomly use some of their kit.?
i saw some people stripping old paint to the bare plastic before repainting the model, what do you think about that? there are some products that melt dry paint layers and allow you to remove them, like VMS clean slate rmvr 3.0
I wish my old kits was saveable and transformation able they are so raggity from sitting on a self and not in display cases like all my most recent builds from last 5 years. Most of the ones that was on shelf and not display boxes or my huge glass display cabinet cause I was a kid and teen and didn't think of dust ruining them and falling off shelf ECT lol. I have maybe 4 out of the 50 models that have gotten ruined from l age and dust from when I was a kid and very young teen. I stopped model building at age 14 and just started again as an adult 5 years ago at age of 26 and now in smart enough to put them in a single display case or in the display cabinet. But thanks for the tips I should be able to rebuild most of them now using some of the tips and techniques you used in this video. I'll just reglue everything that's broken off and then repaint the whole model as one and not take it all apart and rebuild like that cause then I risk destroying pieces for no reason thanks.
Hello. Very nice and impressive transformation. I love this little vehicle. So congratulations. Please, may I ask you a question ❓. What product have you used to weather the tires? Great video and keep in touch for the incoming ones. Best regards from France. François
If you look at some real footage of this WW2 armor vehicles. The soldiers just slap on some paint with paint brush. It looked so sloppy. It's not always spray painted and looked professional.
Most vehicle crew members only had access to brushes, brooms, mops and even rags. Paint guns and compressors were few and far between. Repo-Depo troops had them, so a major repair or retrofit activity would have the painting tools.
This is exactly what I needed
Wonderful!

Awesome! I'm really glad to hear it - thank you!
Slow and steady wins the day :-) love the new chill out music. Always a blast getting a new video from this channel!
Definitely like the extra time showing the whole technique
thanks for your video. car/truck modelers do this all the time.

The extra footage is surprisingly helpful, thanks.
Wonderful! Thank you for the feedback 👍
Updating a very old Tamiya Panzer II (that somehow survived two moves) was my 'gateway' back into the hobby after a long absence.
Ah fantastic! That's great!
Love the extra length on the painting portions, Hank.
Wet nicely done my friend
Nice video, the armored car looks great! You have inspired me to update an old Tamiya T34/76 I did 20+ years ago, thanks!
Quite an upgrade!
Dam thats a nice build as usual keep up the great work boss. 👌
Thanks very much!!

I really enjoyed this one. Nice and relaxing. Thanks
Nice job. I think it came out really well.

@@cmbart1 Yeah the idea that a work of art is never finished, it's merely abandoned. Then you start the next.
There's a lot to be said for that last comment. Everything I look at my old kits I always remember "I forgot to do that or I missed that". Anyway there's always something on the shelf to start NEW. 😅

I was wondering what needle/nozzle size when he applied that green camo, as well.
@@bobrivett7645 I'd suggest a size 2 for close up detail , OR use a 3 and take the tip cover off, and spray at low pressure...
Good Job from Ok to Top 👍

Wheels should be MIG-0033 rubber black as you never see perfect mat black wheels 🛞 in real world 🗺️
Don’t be afraid to have some overspray when painting 3 toned camouflage as it was like that in reality and plenty of museum tanks also have overspray.
