Actually Omniscient Reader Viewpoint is a goated story where every character feels alive and important. And the whole world feels fluid and it somehow makes sense. Just amazing.
Omniscient readers viewpoint is actually peak. Some of the foreshadowings in chapter 50 of the lightnovel gets explained at like 500 or something and it doesn't even feel like forced.

He's coming from the perspective of someone who didn't really try to understand it too. But i don't mean this as a harsh criticism to Garnt, everyone has their own tastes and there will be a bunch of really great games and other experiences that you'll enjoy but are out of your confort zone. In his view, randomly generated is stricly negative, which is a way to see it. The way i see, his main problem with it seemed to be not feeling like things are created in an intentional way, but there's intention in choosing and tweaking randomness. There's a vison of a desired experience in what choices you can and cannot make and how all of it affects gameplay and how much you can do to play around through experience and strategy. Maybe as long as Garnt can understand that he could enjoy it a bit more. Honestly, well designed rouguelikes feel like they're the easiest games to play, crisp gameplay and intuitive mechanics paired with the inconsequence of losing and trying again makes a very relaxed experience to me, he's doing the opposite of how i personally enjoy rouguelikes by overthinking...anything at all, just don't think, enjoy the game.
I think he's probably coming from the JRPG perspective where procedurely generated maps exist for the purpose of padding out content and are really simple and monotonous. It's different from a roguelike that specifically tries to take advantage of randomness to improve the experience. Like randomness in slay the spire exists as a thematic element as well where you are exploring the unknown. It plays into Balatro's randomness aspect of being a card game and roguelikes have to be randomly generated since you could just replay it. I think Garnt just hasn't played too many games outside of mainstream titles, especially since almost all good roguelikes are somewhat indie (other than maybe Hades, but even then it feels very indie-like, but maybe im just capping lol) He mainly just plays JRPGs (like Palaces in Persona 5 are so much better than Mementos which is randomly generated) In my opinion, there has to be consequence for procedurally generated games to be fun, and those games aren't for everyone. Like in RPGs in general, you only really gain and can't lose anything so a random dungeon isn't scary or tension inducing compared to a roguelike where it can be a run-ender. Like randomized Pokémon without nuzelocke is just boring, since there is no consequences, it becomes a normal game without the intention behind it. Randomness is a great way of adding tension and unknown into games, but it only works for games that have permanent loss like Roguelikes or want to capture discovery (like in Minecraft)
I love that they are clowning on "A fantasies of a stepmother" thinking it's something degenerate, while it's actually one of the best written manhwa out there and is generally beloved. "Fathert, I don't want this marriage" however, is just as melodramatic as it sounds (and I loved every second of reading it)

Nah, it depends from game to game. I'd say the most important thing is the rng to get the build you want, sure for that to happen u need some knowledge gained by playing the game, but with most games u can pre search all this shit to try and achieve an op build and clear it. So for most games like Dead cells, Vampire survivors and even Hades learning attack patterns it's not as important. After all it's not a souls game where u have this super OP bosses
we currently have like 3 terms traditional roguelikes, the ones which are most like rogue itself modern roguelikes, games with perma death and no metaprogression roguelites, games with metaprogression between runs it's such a weird thing too cause the only reason why rogue had permadeath to begin with was cause it was made before saves were made lmao and somehow that's the part which stuck

Heavily agree on Garnt's recommendation of ORV, it's one of the only "regression" webtoons that I think is actually top tier. It does a good job of taking the standard regression trope and doing it a different way that ends up working really well. It's also such a great series to binge because those first couple of chapters immerse you into the story so hard you end up flying through the series. Hopefully it gets an anime adaptation sometime soon because that series really deserves a good one.
Hearing Garnt trying to sell them on the regression trope was hilarious. I love that he somewhat succeeded with ORV because it is genuinely good compared to the mountains of slop manhwa and korean webnovels.
It's too bad they didn't end up recording this a little bit later, after Not Like Us had dropped. Omniscient Reader's Point of View is such a hard sell. I didn't like the synopsis or the concept either but the more you read it, the more you get invested in the entire thing. Highly recommended. Also, if Connor can stick to FFXIV all the way to Endwalker that'll be our proudest moment.

WEBCOMICS/WEBTOONS MENTIONED OMG - ORV is so good!! i've only been reading the webtoon but it's AMAAAZING. (would not compare it to squid game tho LOL as the two are very different) i wish garnt was a bit more deep into webtoons since there are actually quite a few that are really great reads and not just trash. the webtoon space as a whole is relatively new as long strip comics were developed in tandem with the infinite phone scroll that smartphones have to offer, so obv there's a lot of new territory that comes with that. i find the new space exciting and super accessible, even though the writing isn't always impeccable or even that good. but there are definitely a few worth talking about with incredible writing!
ORV is actually really good. Basically Kim Dokja reads this ten year long novel that updates like everyday as his lifeline. However, when the novel ends, the main protagonist of the novel got a rather vague ending which Kim Dokja thought wasn’t the ‘good ending’ his protagonist deserved. Hence his main goal is the reach the end of the story with the best possible ending. I personally prefer the novel more despite how long it is as it better conveys emotion (and most importantly angst) and has some hecking good characterisation building and world building. You can read it with a shit ton and spoilers and not actually be ‘spoiled’ due to how the plot is built up. Anywho give a read please. I’m actually begging you to read it.
I personally prefer the manwha for a couple reasons: 1. I find manwha to be more expressive when the artist is good at drawing 2. I like the weekly hype/anticipation of a new chapter coming out 3. It's probably the manhwa with the best art 4. I'm a child that can't read chapter books because of my short attention span

I think I prefer the novel because I’m a big literature nerd and I like how the style changes from kinda amateur-ish when Kim Dokja is still clearly a ‘reader’ and when he becomes a ‘character’. The wordplay and style is something hard to encapsulate in images. The experimentation with formatting is also great and I think inner thoughts and emotions are more poetically portrayed. The manhwa is absolutely hecking amazing tho and they somehow incorporated these difficult ideas from within the novel into well drawn and formatted pictures. I look forward to how the manhwa will continue to produce chapters that heighten the ORV experience through imagery.

1:22:30 Rogue is an old game that used permadeath as an actual mechanic rather than a limitation of hardware. Roguelikes and Roguelites are called that because they’re like Rogue. Roguelike means permadeath, Roguelite means you have some form of meta progression but still lose your progress each death. You don’t need to have all 8 of the things that website listed to be a Roguelike or a Roguelite, it’s usually just defined by how death affects the gameplay progression. The other stuff is mostly irrelevant, just common features.
Nah, Garnt explained it pretty poorly. It's one of the greatest manwha (korean webcomics) of all time and my (and many other peoples') favorite. It shows it's true theme after chapter 60 of the manwha or so, but even before chapter 60 it's a really good action series. I highly recommend giving the series a try if you like manwha.

Like in RPGs in general, you only really gain and can't lose anything so a random dungeon isn't scary or tension inducing compared to a roguelike where it can be a run-ender. Like randomized Pokémon without nuzelocke is just boring, since there is no consequences, it becomes a normal game without the intention behind it.
Randomness is a great way of adding tension and unknown into games, but it only works for games that have permanent loss like Roguelikes or want to capture discovery (like in Minecraft)

Kendrick Lamar and in it Kendrick's verse was playful rivalry but Drake didn't like it so he started sneak dissing Kendrick for years until the last straw which was First person shooter then Future and metro boomin had beef with Drake and it lead to where we are today.
In Roguelikes and Roguelite the progression is the knowledge. You progression isn't biggest numbers, stronger gear, stronger equipment. The progression is the knowledge about the enemies and their patterns

Nah, it depends from game to game. I'd say the most important thing is the rng to get the build you want, sure for that to happen u need some knowledge gained by playing the game, but with most games u can pre search all this shit to try and achieve an op build and clear it. So for most games like Dead cells, Vampire survivors and even Hades learning attack patterns it's not as important. After all it's not a souls game where u have this super OP bosses

Heavily agree on Garnt's recommendation of ORV, it's one of the only "regression" webtoons that I think is actually top tier. It does a good job of taking the standard regression trope and doing it a different way that ends up working really well. It's also such a great series to binge because those first couple of chapters immerse you into the story so hard you end up flying through the series. Hopefully it gets an anime adaptation sometime soon because that series really deserves a good one.

It's too bad they didn't end up recording this a little bit later, after Not Like Us had dropped. That one was not only an orbital strike that sent Drake back into hiding, but it outlined exactly how many songs he had in the chamber: 1-2-3-4-5 plus five. Ten tracks prepared. He had an entire ALBUM locked and ready to drop on Drake. We only heard half of it. For how fire Not Like Us turned out, I'm actually kinda sad we didn't get the rest of it. Drake be damned, that album was getting gooooooood.
Omniscient Reader's Point of View is such a hard sell. I didn't like the synopsis or the concept either but the more you read it, the more you get invested in the entire thing. Highly recommended. Also, if Connor can stick to FFXIV all the way to Endwalker that'll be our proudest moment.

WEBCOMICS/WEBTOONS MENTIONED OMG - ORV is so good!! i've only been reading the webtoon but it's AMAAAZING. (would not compare it to squid game tho LOL as the two are very different) i wish garnt was a bit more deep into webtoons since there are actually quite a few that are really great reads and not just trash. the webtoon space as a whole is relatively new as long strip comics were developed in tandem with the infinite phone scroll that smartphones have to offer, so obv there's a lot of new territory that comes with that. i find the new space exciting and super accessible, even though the writing isn't always impeccable or even that good. but there are definitely a few worth talking about with incredible writing!

ORV is actually really good. Basically Kim Dokja reads this ten year long novel that updates like everyday as his lifeline. However, when the novel ends, the main protagonist of the novel got a rather vague ending which Kim Dokja thought wasn’t the ‘good ending’ his protagonist deserved. Hence his main goal is the reach the end of the story with the best possible ending. I personally prefer the novel more despite how long it is as it better conveys emotion (and most importantly angst) and has some hecking good characterisation building and world building. You can read it with a shit ton and spoilers and not actually be ‘spoiled’ due to how the plot is built up. Anywho give a read please. I’m actually begging you to read it.
There are a lot of other stuff like the themes and allusions that are like really good but I’ll spare you from my incessant yapping.
I personally prefer the manwha for a couple reasons:
1. I find manwha to be more expressive when the artist is good at drawing
2. I like the weekly hype/anticipation of a new chapter coming out
3. It's probably the manhwa with the best art
4. I'm a child that can't read chapter books because of my short attention span
@@realization8919 lmao I understand reason four but I literally read all of ORV in one month. The art of the manhwa is also really amazing, especially the action scenes. I think I prefer the novel because I’m a big literature nerd and I like how the style changes from kinda amateur-ish when Kim Dokja is still clearly a ‘reader’ and when he becomes a ‘character’. The wordplay and style is something hard to encapsulate in images. The experimentation with formatting is also great and I think inner thoughts and emotions are more poetically portrayed. The manhwa is absolutely hecking amazing tho and they somehow incorporated these difficult ideas from within the novel into well drawn and formatted pictures. I look forward to how the manhwa will continue to produce chapters that heighten the ORV experience through imagery.

1:22:30 Rogue is an old game that used permadeath as an actual mechanic rather than a limitation of hardware. Roguelikes and Roguelites are called that because they’re like Rogue. Roguelike means permadeath, Roguelite means you have some form of meta progression but still lose your progress each death.
You don’t need to have all 8 of the things that website listed to be a Roguelike or a Roguelite, it’s usually just defined by how death affects the gameplay progression. The other stuff is mostly irrelevant, just common features.

Nah, Garnt explained it pretty poorly. It's one of the greatest manwha (korean webcomics) of all time and my (and many other peoples') favorite. It shows it's true theme after chapter 60 of the manwha or so, but even before chapter 60 it's a really good action series. I highly recommend giving the series a try if you like manwha.
