13:19 that’s a great point - people usually trash talk when they’re up. Larry Bird did it whenever the heck he wanted and he backed it up. That’s special. That’s why he’s a legend.

The Atlanta players on the bench weren't laughing at their teammates. They were having a ball, amazed, watching the greatest player in the NBA going NUTS on the court. Nah man, you have to watch that entire in bounds sequence against Worthy(#42 with goggles) to understand how they were defending Bird. Not just a few seconds of a clip. They set up strong side(opposite Bird). Parish(Kareem is guarding him) sets a screen for Dennis Johnson(Magic guarding him) and ends up getting a switch and Magic is on him, so they have to double with Kareem. Bird sets a weakside screen for Ainge under the basket and he curls out to the 3 point line. They doubled Parish, he threw it back out to Dennis Johnson. The Lakers doubled DJ with Cooper. Cooper was on Ainge at the top of the key. Magic also ran back out to defend DJ on the right side. DJ kicks it to Ainge, who is wide open. Ainge was a very good 3 point shooter, so Worthy was the closest to him and he had to rotate out on him. While that happened, McHale goes under the basket, which draws a defender and Bird back up right to that corner to shoot that 3 when Worthy had to rotate out.

People always talk about the poor defense of these teams against Bird. But I think the context missing here is the other ways that Bird played. He was an insane passer and willing to get rid of the ball. He would drive the basket, he had no issues shooting obviously. Not even talking about how often he'd fake people out.
You could not cover Bird by just blocking his shots. Every other person that talks about Bird and the way he played will tell you that throughout the game Larry was wearing these guys out on the court in ways that was not simply just his shooting game.

You couldn’t play bird close because of his passing. Besides, tight defense wasn’t the name of the game back then. It was under cutting players, putting feet under the player when they go up for a jump shot. Half the time you could draw blood without a foul being called. But with bird if he drove someone got a guaranteed layup. It was damned if you do, damned if you don’t guard him close

@@martinhenderson8636 I watched it live. Season tickets in Detroit. Defense was tough, just not lock down defense because it wasn’t needed back then. If they did drive you could put your hands on them and turn them. Clips from TH-cam don’t show the whole story. There weren’t many Michael Jordan’s who could drive inside and survive a long career. Plus there wasn’t all these illegal defense, touch fouls so there was no need for lockdown players. Jordan, Isaiah Thomas, and Gary Payton were the start of those types of players. Others were good because they put their hands on the players hip but when Jordan came along teams started playing those type players who were bench players before.

They did play off though for the most part, especially bird because of his passing. Skill was better back then so it was more multi dimensional sional. If you aren’t getting my point I’m sorry for you. I’ll say it again, defense was great back then, just different from today. Today they look good because players are so one dimensional but my point was there wasn’t a need for that in your face lockdown guy because players were too good all around back then. Hoping that helps dude

Also MJ learned from Larry and Kobe learned from MJ but more importantly Kobe was coached by MJ, Bird never had a mentor like that in his corner, he was the mentor. Plus another fact that gets over looked a lot, the 3 point wasn't even introduced till Larry's rookie year, it was nothing he really trained for and he still made them look easy and incorporated it into his play. Lebron I don't even have in the top 5

When Larrys retirement was done there was no game at the Boston Garden yet it was sold out, let that sink in "no game yet sold out" for one mans retirement.
For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play.
Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year off in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought.
At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
    Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
    All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
    Career averages:
    24.3 points per game
    10.0 rebounds per game
    6.3 assists per game
    88.6% free throw percentage
    49.6% field goal percentage
    37.6% 3-point percentage
Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

Here is a stat. 5 seconds left on the clock in a close game, Jordan and bird shoot 50%. Lebron shoots 20% in those moments. Lebrons biggest issue is he holds the ball for 22 seconds of the shot clock. He can’t make free throws. His defense is even worse than bird. He passing makes players shoot last second shots. He makes players worse around him. That equals no way he’s a top 10 player.

MJ won a lot of games, against some really great team in Detroit, New York, Miami and the Pacers. Bird won a lot of games against the showtime Lakers, Detroit, Philly, you name it. I can't really pick MJ over Bird just because Bird's team put it on MJ early in his career and knocked MJ out of the playoffs multiple times. I grew up watching both guys play, and I really can't put one as the GOAT over the other. The fact is if either one of them was on your team, you are going to win a lot of games, and championships. I think you have to throw Wilt into the GOAT conversation, even though I have not seen many of his games, but just watching old highlights will show you how good he was.

Jordan and Larry are about the same level of player. Jordan is athletically faster and quicker. Larry knows that but he beats Jordan by playing smarter and using his team better. Larry (and Magic) was probably the smartest player on the court, and he had as much skill as anyone, including Jordan. Larry was also a great team player, and that helped them beat everyone. Also, Larry had tons of confidence. He knew he could beat anyone.
In one playoff game Jordan scored 63 points against the Celtics. After the game Larry said it was like God came down in the form of Michael Jordan and played ball. BUT the Celtics still won that game.
Larry's record against Mike is 17-11 regular season, 6-0 playoffs. Magic's record against Mike is I think 6-7 regular season. They never played against each other post season.

If it hasn't been clarified yet...the reason Larry Bird was 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs is because Larry Bird was playing with 3 other Hall of Fame players and Jordan was basically out there by himself. But Bird himself after playing Jordan in the playoffs described the experience as "God disguised as Michael Jordan". So no disrespect to Larry Bird, but Jordan was just on another level...

Yes the opposing coach said no when Bird asked if he had anyone who could card him, you had to witness and follow what Bird was doing night after night. Bird is only the 3rd player in NBA history to win 3 MVP's in a role in a era when the league was stacked with enormous talent and I don't believe anyone has did it since including Jordan or James!!!

They weren’t laughing at there own player watch the game they were so amazed at the toughness of these shots and he was making them all he would shoot tough shot after tough and make every time he would take one the bench was like no way he makes this shot and bam nothing but net and did it all game long but when he got fouled he just shot the ball so the ref would say he was in the act of shooting so he could go to the foul line coaches teach you that basic fundamentals so the bench was like he’s just throwing it up to get to the foul and when he let it go the bench is like no way goes in off balance 3pointer as he falls into the trainer and he hits it the bench fell on the floor about how great he was shooting because they thought ain’t no way swish

I'm a huge Bird fan. Grew up in Massachusetts and lived through the whole Celtics-Lakers rivalry in the 80's. But I have to pick Jordan over Bird. And it's true Bird was 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs, but that was all fairly early in Jordan's career. It took a few seasons for Jordan to become true Jordan. Once he reached that level...well, six championships in six seasons.

    • @victorsixtythree

@Ken D Man, it would have been great to see prime Bird vs. prime Jordan...
One check mark that I would definitely give to Bird over Jordan is that Bird was great right away when entering the NBA. While it took Jordan a few seasons to reach his peak, Bird made FIRST TEAM All-NBA as a rookie, finished fourth in MVP voting (Magic didn't make the top ten.) and took the Celtics from a 29 win team to a 61 win team. In Jordan's rookie year the Bulls improved to 38 wins from 27 the year before. In Magic's rookie year the Lakers went from 47 to 60 wins. Right out of the gate Bird didn't just put up stats, he had an immediate impact on winning games.

Bird #1 all around best basketball player we have seen yet. He played TEAM basketball. He didn’t need to be the star but he did need his team to win. I would put Jordan in 2nd, Kobe 3rd and sorry, but there’s a few I would put before LeBron (And a few I would put before Kobe), but out of the four you mentioned, that’s my lineup. And yes I am one of those old time basketball fans. The game is different now. The star gets the ball, takes the shot and if he misses they’re all running back to the other end…very little rebounding, very little passing. I would advise you to watch some of those old games - watch some team basketball. When it’s played well, it’s a beautiful thing. I think Larry and the Celtics did it best.

It's Doug, long time basketball fan since Dr. J was kinng, we used to dress A.B. style, had the red white and blue ball, then a Larry Legend fan since his magical 1978/79 NCAA undefeated season, saw it all, 1980s basketbal was the best, 90s into Kobe's time too...here's my ranking of your 4, #1 Larry Legend, # Magic Johnson, #3 MJ, last LeBron...Legend and Magic both impacted their teams and games the most and could pkay every position and did, MJ is MJ- awesome and he got better and better...LeBron is a tremendous talent with lots of bling, but not as clutch and todays games is so weak, that knocks him back..all great players for sure- Larry Legend took a 29 win team to 61 his first year- no McHsle, Parish etc...2nd year won a title, HOF at all phases of basketball, junkyard dog tough and killer swag and clutch, and his skill so far above he PLAYED AND DOMINATED NBA players left handed! case closed 🐐🐐🐐🐐

Re: Bird's Celtics beating Jordan's Bulls. Bird was in his prime and Jordan had just arrived. Bird & the Celtics had already won 2 NBA championships ('81 & '84) by the time Michael arrived in the league. At that point the Celtics were one of the greatest teams ever. The Bulls were building a new dynasty that would happen a few years later in the 90's. So, yes, Bird was 6-0 against Jordan in the NBA playoffs, head-to-head. But if it had been prime Michael Jordan's Bulls against prime Larry Bird's Celtics - man, I don't know. It would've been a sensational series. Jordan is the best basketball player ever, IMHO. Bird & Magic right behind him. All were superb players and tacticians. Michael had the edge in athleticism, but Bird was a better long shooter and clutch player. You've probably heard this, but legendary Lakers coach Pat Riley put it this way comparing the two (paraphrasing): "If I had to choose one player to shoot the ball to win a championship, I'd choose Michael Jordan. But if I had to choose one player to shoot the ball to save my life, I'd pick Larry Bird." Both had a competitive nature and will to win that were off the charts. In Jordan's last championship year with the Bulls (1998), he ran into Larry Bird again, this time as Coach of the Indiana Pacers. Jordan & the Bulls prevailed - by 5 points in Game SEVEN. I believe they were the ONLY team to take the Bulls to 7 games that year. And it looked like they were going to spoil Michael's last championship year. Again - both absolutely HATED to lose. That's why they were the best. I never saw anyone before or since that had their killer instincts. It was unbelievable.

Jordan had better skills Bird had a better understanding of the game. One on one its gonna be Jordan but in a team setting where one guy car raise everyone around him up is another thing.
I hated both Bird and Jordan in real time as a Pistons fan but theres no doubt both are top 5 to me.
Gotta remember too that this was an era that didnt have the training or diet of today. Bird in todays league would be 10 mote lbs of muscle same with Jordan.
As far as your first question, how the 4 rank..depends.
    Physical prowess goes to Lebron.
Overall skill goes to Jordan and Kobe.
Leadership/will and the understanding of the game itself, Bird.
Jordan is the greatest pure player of all time but if all 4 players on the team are equal, im gonns take Bird over Jordan in a prime game setting.
    So...Jordan
    Bird
    Kobe
    Lebron
No disrespect for any of them, all great and all have an argument to be made for the title of Goat.
