    WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
    This is a random dot autostereogram... music video.
    HUH? A WHAT?
    A stereogram is an image which, when viewed with two eyes, using one of several different techniques, produces the illusion of depth perception. They're cool. You can read all about them on Wikipedia. Some of you will already be familiar with the autostereogram, which was popularized by the Magic Eye® book series in the 1990s. These are made on computers, and use subtle changes in a repeating pattern to combine depth information for both eyes into one single image. By tricking your eyes into viewing these images a certain way (see below) one can see a three dimensional scene. This video is made up of a sequence of something called a "random dot autostereograms". These are also made on computers, but use subtle differences in a randomly generated field of noise to create the illusion. And a music video... is a music video.
    HOW DO I SEE IT?
    To view autostereograms, one must simply "decouple" or defocus their eyes, tricking the brain into seeing the slight variations in the repeating pattern as depth information. All autostereograms are made to be viewed in one of two ways, using either the "crossed-eye" method or "parallel-eye" method. Some can be viewed both ways and still look cool, but not really this one. To be nice, we made this video viewable both ways because some people are better at one method than the other. Though there are several ways to learn how to see them, there's a decent step-by-step for how to view parallel eye stereograms here (www.wikihow.com/View-Stereograms). Crossed-eye stereograms are basically the same principal, but done by crossing your eyes, rather than "relaxing" your eyes or "looking through" the image. It can take a while to learn how to see them, but try practicing with some stills and take your time. It's worth it.
    BUT WAIT, THIS IS A VIDEO. HOW DID YOU MAKE IT?
    This is where it gets technical. To make your own autostereogram, one must first create a thing called a "depth map" which is a 2D representation of 3D depth information. We collected real-time depth data of Young Rival performing the song using an X-Box Kinect hooked up to a computer. The computer was running software called RGBD toolkit, designed for capturing the depth information from the Kinect using its built-in infrared system. Once we had our depth information, we unpacked it into image sequences and edited these sequences as if they were regular video. The only difference in the editing process was that depth was represented by luminosity. For fun, you can view the black and white depth-map version HERE. With much trial and error, we then ran the data through an algorithm which took each frame of depth information, converted it into a random dot stereogram image, and repacked it into the final video. Lastly, there was one more colour pass at the end, and voila.

    I feel bad for those who can't maintain the de-focus for the duration because this is a fantastic, well executed idea for a music video.

      @TheJawRaw 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Keshan D once you maintain focus(or defocus, whatever) then slowly start to back away from the screen. If you're not so close up it's easier to maintain focus and also see the whole picture. But I have to start really close to see it

      It really is a bit of effort yes. Here's another problem. While your eyes are orienting as if on an object farther away than your screen, you still have to focus on the surface of the screen, which is much closer. I think that's a little unnatural so it takes some extra concentration.

    • @ruben307
      @ruben307 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      well i only defocus at the start till i see the shape then i focus on it. But it is a little hard to not focus on the surroundings when the singer leaves the screen and you have to go over static to see the phone or drummer.

    • @Sukuraidogai
      @Sukuraidogai 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Everyone can focus on objects in the distance, it's just a matter of figuring out how to focus your eyes at a specific focal length when there is no object to focus on. It's a muscle contraction you can control, just like every other muscle in your body.

And then I woke up and found out I was dreaming the whole time after that I found out I never really learned how to see the picture and it caused a lot of problems I kept making mistakes at work I was mad at gosh I hate those pictures why did they ever make them. LOL just kidding I remember back in the 90s when they created these and they had them at the mall from far I saw several people looking at these pictures on tripods and I was trying to do the and you can hear some people yelling out there it is or I got this one and I couldn't get it I kept trying as hard as I could and everyone would tell me do it like this do it like that and I remember there was this young boy that approached me and he said it's going to be different for everyone try this and he told me to get close enough to where my nose almost touches the picture and slowly separate myself further back further back and I started seeing something form in 3D and then I lost it then I did it again and I could start seeing the whole picture after that it was amazing how they invented this it looks better on a screened cuz you could move your phone or your pad and it gives it more of a three-dimensional look with lighting

      About 4% to 10% of the people out there cannot use stereopsis to see the images (or at least see them clearly enough to make out the shapes), and that is a sufficient amount of people to dissuade some people from using it as a method of production. They are not hard to make as others have said, but a video would be rather time consuming to put together.

    Thats awesome. For those who can't see it, it takes practice to understand exactly what you're supposed to do with your eyes. I recommend staring at a black and white tiled floor for minutes at a time. That's how I learned it when I was a kid. The floor in the hallway outside our apartment was little black and white patterned tiles. I used to stare at it a lot and at points it would jump out at me, like I could touch it. Then I learned how to make it jump out.
    EDIT: I learned to parallel-view just today to watch this properly. I've been cross-viewing all my life so almost every autostereogram was reverse-depth. Now I can see the images popping out, not in. Nice.

    I finally learned how to see these images within the last week, just in time to learn that this video existed. The timing could not have been better. Excellent execution! I will also repeat comments I’ve seen below; if you can’t see it yet, just keep working at it. Once you learn how to defocus your eyes, it gets progressively easier to find that spot. You’ll get it!

      there are 2 types of stereograms, parallel and cross vision. If you are skilled in magic eye images then you should be able to see this video using both, but 90% of the time, stereogram images and videos (like this one) use parallel vision so you have to unfocus your eyes instead of crossing them. You can learn both of those methods, it's not that hard

      I have a theory that Stereograms that require Lenses are Real, and these Magic Eye pictures are just to see who gaslights each other..
      Even the people who "See" can't seem to agree can they.. they just come to a consensus on what they were "supposed" to see.

      You can see 3D figures, no lie. you just have to set your eyes up corectly, it gives you an illusion of depth and you can see shapes. Try practising on something that doesn't move maybe? google "stereogram". It's pretty awesome.

      They all lying, if you go through the comments even those who "See" can't agree on anything.
      They come to a consensus on what this video actually was.
      Magic Eye pictures were "Rediscovered" and out of all the Actual Stereograms (the ones that require lenses and even half blind folk can see the illusion, eg Blue & Red 3d glasses) Only those ones were forgotten.
      It's because they're lies and people are just Gaslighting themselves into Autohypnotism because of fear of being left out..
      Don't be a Yuppy, be proud you don't lie to yourself.

      PRO TIP FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T SEE A DAM THING: Make sure it is full screen, hold out your finger between you and the screen and focus on it. Then move your finger forward and back until the dots come together. keep your finger and head in that position as a reference point. well actually this will make it 'negative', now try imagining your finger behind the screen. If this doesn't work then you are either cross eyed or blind in at leas one eye.
