  • This video is about my CoPart Hummer Purchase and the issues that I am discovering along the way. This Hummer was bought to be a Father-Daughter project for when she turns 16. We will learn and fix it up together, I just have to get it running first. But, a potential Rod Bearing problem and a Stalling issue is keeping us from diving in and really fixing it up for her. On this episode, we try to diagnose the Stalling issue by installing 2 Camshaft/Crankshaft sensors.

My 2006 3.5L was doing the exact same (extremely rough idle, stalling, no power on acceleration, dying out, was exhibiting a little knocking but more like when it's running too lean) thing after replacing the coil packs. What mine ended up being was a dirty and loose MAF sensor. So I cleaned it, made sure all connectors were snug and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body. Haven't had an issues since. Just sayin, in case someone else with a similar problem stumbles across these comments.

The h3 is 👏 love mine. Easy to work on. Quite reliable if you go easy on it. Does most everything you need it too do. Mine has 415,000 I’m now and still going strong 💪 I’m decently mechanical so I go over it twice a year and replace whatever it needs 4:28 myself. Blew the cat last year and dropped in a new manifold. Blew the water pump the year before. Changed it myself. Alot of the parts now are pretty new. I try not to question too much if I need it I just get it. Can’t go wrong because it will always be far less than buying a new vehicle 🫡🇨🇦

I currently own a 2009 Hummer H3 with 3.7 liter 5 cylinder engine with 121, 700 plus miles that I put on it. It was never abused or driven hard. Mostly Highway miles. The only problem I have with my Hummer is the ECM -- engine control module might be going bad. It was displaying several dashboard codes. I had the ECM reprogrammed by a good programmer and he cleared all codes for 1 day. Then I parked it for a day and the same dashboard codes displayed when I started the engine the next day, I let the engine warm up for a few minutes and the dashboard lights went off and the check engine light came on steady. So I connected my diagnostic tool under the dash and it was showing the O-2 sensor was bad and the EVAP valve was bad.

If your still dealing with this ...clean the throttle body flap..they build up deposit really bad and mess with the position sensor on it..also clean or replace the maf. Good luck as for radio..when you take it out there is a little box that allows you to adjust the door chime and excessories beep

GM went cheap on the battery cable terminals. Replace them with mil-spec style. Also, the H3s have problems with corrosion on the underside of the fuse box which puts the entire vehicle into an erratic "brown-out" condition.

My H3 had a similar knock sound also with camshaft sensor errors. Run a quart of Synthetic ATF for a few hundred miles, change the oil and add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil, and the Problem went away. For my situation it seemed to be stuck lifters from gummed/gunked up old oil. It also solved my Cam Sensor issue (due to gummed oil on the sensor).

I have exactly the same error code, with the difference my engine runs nice, no knocking sound and it doesn't die. So far, I've been done the following:
    - Oil change
    - Injectors cleaned
    - MAF sensor cleaned
    - Replaced Crankshaft position sensor
    - Replaced Camshaft position sensors (both)
    - Replaced Crankshaft position actuator solenoid
    (with an OEM AC Delco)
    - Engine starts easily right after turning the key and even remotely with an aftermarket alarm remote control
    - No engine odd rattling noise, so I discard a timing chain issue
    - No rough ridding
    - Checked crankshaft position actuator solenoid after a long ride if it has any metal burr and it didn't
    - Cleaned all sensor connections with electrical cleaner: Crankshaft, camshafts and solenoid
    - I clear this code with an OBDII scanner and appears every time I re-scan.
In a few words, engine runs normally but this engine light is making me nuts because I want to scan the ECU every chance that I have to make sure than any other error comes up, any advice?

I wish I could help you. I am still fighting mine. Changed out all of the sensors and then the engine blew. Had a mechanic look at and he could not figure out either. I'm not sure about the noise but I think the engine shutting down and the car shaking and running really bad is because of something called "reduced power" which is a really common problem on the H3's. You can search about it.

  • @danwhite4157
    @danwhite4157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It sounds like it needs the variable timing solenoid replaced. It is on the exhaust side of the engine, toward the front and is held in with one 10mm bolt. It will throw various codes when bad. Sometimes the screens on the solenoid get choked off and it only needs cleaning. I Run full synthetic oil with a good filter. Mine has 300k on it and I pull the VTS and clean the screens every oil change. It about a 5 min job.

  • @tltsw
    @tltsw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Well all engines have what they call a knock sensor and it tells the computer to advance or retard timing though what they call a cam phaser found on the end of the cam shaft and this is your problem. The rod knock is causing this stall. I work for GM and have been for 30 years and my H3 had this very same problem. Now all that being said it's time to make this a Alpha truck.

Sounds like it jumped a tooth giving that reading , that knock was the camshaft jumped 1 or two teeth . he could have saved it by replacing the timing chain with a timing chain kit , front and back includes tensioner . when ever you hear that knock shut off immediately, timing chain is stretched and will jump out of time destroying the valves. Stalling is map sensor dirty or needs to be replaced

After changing all the necessary Sensors , i would do a Compression Test , and see
the Results , and maybe a Leak down test too , to make sure Engine does Not have
Mechanical problems such as oil leaking inside the Combustion chamber or Anti freeze
leaking inside the Head cylinder and combustion chamber [ there is a Liquid Test
that you fill up the Tube and put it on the top of the Radiator cap [ first take out some fluid
from the radiator cap , to have some empty space as not to touch the Tester's
Suction Tube ] , then pump the top to see if the color of the liquid turns yellow which
is the presence of Antifreeze in the Head cylinder ] ...Did you as well change the
Variable Valve Timing Solenoid ? [VVT ] ....
Or maybe if you have found the problem please let me know in here , thanks .
Change oil as often as you can [ once a month ] never use FRAM oil filters
they cause deposits on the Engine , they are the worst Filters in the world ,
next change all the car's oils , such as front and back Differentials , Transfer case oil
and finally the Transmission filter and Oil , PLUS the Water Pump , Thermostat ,
and for NOW ! hehehe , the Thermostat Sensor ...
Adding Marvel Mystery oil to the Engine [ not all of it but lets say 400 ML ] can
keep engine healthy , i would also add full bottle for the Gas tank to clean all the
pipes clean and Lubricate the Gas pump .....
Worst thing is that you may Need another ENGINE all together .

Sensors will make these h3 vehicles act all kinds of stupid. And the BCM is basically garbage in them. Not throwing shade on them they’re great little snow trucks and great climbers. Towing isn’t terrible other than the mirrors and tiny windows. The dying is a number of variables. Be aware that if it gets the dreaded flashing check engine light and starts rattling like it’s about to explode stop driving it and replace the spark plug and coil pack and if that’s not it look forward to injectors. They certainly require a lot of maintenance if you daily drive them. But the cam sensors they have two one at intake one at exhaust side. The oil sensor is accessible from the top without removing anything it requires some reach. The EVAP Thing can give a fuel cap light if replacing the cap doesn’t fix it and the hoses are good it’s likely the purge valve solenoid. I can list all sorts of reasons they’ll act and sound that way. But again not hating on them I know this because I have one of these as a daily driver and it’s a constant project to have these once they’re older. Definitely a interesting vehicle and good 4x4 but it takes a lot of care to make them reliable and maybe buy back ups of all of the sensors and just store them in it because it’s always bound to happen when you’re far from home. What’s under the engine cover that has the vortex logo is the coils and plugs. There’s a spacer you’ll need to get for your catalytic system otherwise it it eventually always throw a code for it because once they’re older the sensors don’t detect right and the spacers are cheaper than replacing the converter.

I haven't finished watching the whole video yet . but I'm going to think that when the camshaft sensor went bad that the camshaft was out of line , and something under the valve cover went wrong . and I'm assuming it's probably a bent push rod. either that or a broken push rod... most likely a bent one , and that's what's making all the noise....

It has a new set of tires with 20 inch fuel zephyr wheels. I looked up wheels without tires are 2k. People here in New Orleans don't buy off road types of trucks and with gas prices so high i think i can talk um down to at least $9,500 out the door.
