  • My name is Ethan Chu, 15 year old film student at Orange County School of the Arts. Over my summer vacation, I went to Sendai, Japan to experience life at a Japanese high school for 5 weeks. The differences between Japanese and American culture were so drastic, I knew I had to document my experience and share it with friends and family back home. Using the limited amount of film equipment that I had brought, I shot and edited this documentary while I was in Japan so I could show it to my classmates. I added translation subtitles for both English-speaking and Japanese audiences. Overall, it was an amazing, rare experience and now, through this video, I can share my adventure at a Japanese high school.

so unfortunately that was my last time going, but im very grateful for my experiences there!!
but now that i think about it, it would have been even more amazing if i could have documented my last year like you did, but oh well the memories will live on in my head haha

Ethan...you're a good young man. Your parents have raised you well and afforded you the opportunity to experience great times already in your young life.
I am a retired public high school teacher from Glendale, Ca. I had the opportunity to take 12 of our students from Glendale High School over to Nisshan High School in Osaka, Japan for 21 days back in 2001. We exchanged students each year for many years and it became a favorite time at our school when we hosted kids from Nisshan High. Watching your video reminded me of the many club activities that we were able to experience while over there as well as our job of custodial work at the end of each day. It was truly a magnificent experience.
This exchange went on for many years between the two schools until the Glendale City Council did something really stupid and disrespected the people and schools of Osaka to the point they decided to end their participation in the exchange program. They decided to install a monument of a Korean "Comfort Woman" sitting on a bench in one of our local parks. This act angered and disrespected the Japanese people to where they no longer wanted anything to do with our students which was a shame since we had no influence in their decision to do what they did. Dumb Asses!😲 Thanks again Ethan for bring back fond memories.

I am a Japanese American, born in Japan to a Japanese father but a Californian from infancy. I wrote a letter at to the Japanese Consulate when the Glendale situation happened, supporting the City of Glendale's support for its Korean and Korean-American residents and expressing displeasure with Japanese activists in this country who tried to oppose the placement of those statues. Several other Japanese Americans signed the letter. We believed then, and continue to believe now, that the Japanese state and much of Japanese society are wrongly trying to downplay the evil committed by Japan against Korean women during WWII.

@@hajenso Great! Can you name just one other town, city or state here in the US that decided to get involved in this geo-political mess? Nope! Just our ridiculous Glendale City Council treading where they don't belong.
If they had to get involved in something, they should have put up a remembrance plaque where the Verdugo Hills Golf Course was located. If you know anything about history, you should know that Japanese American Citizens were incarcerated there at the start of WW II. Now how in the hell do you imprison law obiding, US citizens simply because of their nationality? When you can answer that, get back to me.

I like your focus on the details of daily routine, as well as club activities as these two things really stick out to me as defining characteristics that differentiate the Japanese school system from American school. I used to work at a Japanese high school as an English teacher. Now I am a chef in a Japanese restaurant in America, so I like to see that the English teacher at Meisei used to be a sushi chef, too. 挨拶とかささいなことが恋しい、懐かしいね。も字幕は上手! Well done!
