2022 World Championship Flies - Super Simple Pheasant Tail Tutorial

- The name for this pattern says it all. This is about the simplest version of a pheasant tail you can find with a tweak to add some durability to what is typically a fragile material. The pheasant tail is one of the most famous patterns of all time for a reason. Frank Sawyer had the right idea when he started fishing this pattern. It's still just as effective today as it was in his time and is heavily relied on by many anglers in the competition scene as well. This year a simple drab pheasant tail nymph was important for myself and most of my teammates at the world fly fishing championships in Asturias, Spain. It worked well for the spooky brown trout in the low water conditions we faced. I'm sure it will work well for you as well and it's easy enough to tie that you'll be able to crank them out by the dozens.

Hi Devin,
For conventional wrapping (right handed tier that ties over and under...) if you spin PT barbs around the thread in clockwise manner it will get tighter with each additional wrap around the hook.
Thats why when we want to flatten the thread we counter spin the bobbin holder.

I've been tying this for quite a few months, without the CDL tail, just with pheasant tail fibers, and frankly they work better, but do break off much faster, sometimes I lose them all on the first fish if I have to use a tool to remove the fly. That said I just counter wrap the pheasant tail, and then wrap it with the GSP making a segmented look. Even in the smallest size I still use GSP 100 denier, and cord it up to make the rib. I used a pt that was almost the exact same, except I had a little dubbing from my cat as a collar behind the bead. It was great in Spain. Thanks Devin for the video

Man, I appreciate this kind of video Devon !! Going to try the wrapping of thread around the pheasant tail fibers. I like this pattern with a Mounds colored bead from Firehole, it’s a fly that has no flash at all to spook a trout and it’s a very natural looking fly even though copper beads are my first choice for this fly. Thanks!!!!!

Brilliant something about pheasant feathers. It is in it's self a hot spot. I catch 8 to 10 lb Rainbow's at the local stocker lake every other 8 to 10 hour day.

Been tying this exact pattern for a couple years and it absolutly crushes as a dropper under a dry for me.

How about twisting the pheasant tail fibers up with a dubbing loop and a dubbing twister to reinforce the strands? Just another way of doing it or is it more thread dependant 12/0 vs 12/0 Nano silk? A great way of doing it for sure!
You could twist it in a dubbing loop but it would be a bit bulkier and would likely trap more fibers that way. The nano silk is extremely tough and does a good job of holding the fibers to the hook.
I use the same fly but use pt for the entire fly. Learned it years ago on Loren William site.
I have been using that tie for 3 weeks now in NJ. I use it as a dropper and one Perdigon as point fly. This Super Simple Pheasant Tail is AMAZING!. I get about 90% of catch vs Perdigon. Small fishes, large fishes - same. It works so WELL. I am planning on tying with different pheasant tail color (black, lighter brown) and see where it lands. Looking also at different hot spots (purple, green and red) . I love to experiment. And these hooks are stellar. I only use these and the Jig force now. that's it. Can I use these pheasant tails in larger size (like 12-14) and use them as point fly? I feel they work very well as a small offering so curious if others have been luck with larger ones. Thanks !!!
Pheasant Tails will work in pretty much any size but you’ll need long fibers for size 12 or larger hooks.

Can you tie this without wrapping the pt fibres around the thread?ie normal wrap and add fine wire for rib?
You can but I’ve had better durability wrapping it around the nano silk than just counter ribbing it with wire.

can you tie this on a jig hook ?
Of course. My two favorite hooks for this fly, and pretty much all small to medium size nymphs at this point, are the Dohiku 303 or the Fulling Mill Jig Force Short. If you are partial to jig hooks, there's no reason why you can't tie any nymph on them in my opinion.

Put a bead on a jig hook and tie on a tail. Go fishing. I bet it works. Fish aren't that smart.
