  • Non-traditional education has it's merits, however, overall it is detrimental to a child's future ability to get a job, make friends and enter higher eduction

As someone who was homeschooled, most homeschoolers do socialize and have friends etc. We dont just stay at home all day. There are co-ops. Sports teams, etc.

Unschooling is different than homeschooling. My suspicion is a large reason for people who choose unschooling over homeschooling is the total lack of organization, structure, support system, standards, or anything. 'Child lead learning' is perfect for parents who don't want to be parents or exert rules for their kids. For unschooled kids to socialize with other kids their age the parents would have to hook into a homeschool network or other method to find other kids around the same age who did not already have commitments. My suspicion (could be totally wrong) is that majority of homeschool is due to religious preference while unschooling is due to ultra-libertarianism. The religious do as their 'priest' tells them; libertarians do not follow anyone (in theory. I find them to be sheep to conspiracy theorists) so the followers of the 2 paths do not necessarily mix well.

Unschooling is like throwing a book at a child without teaching them how to read

The individualism factor was a really good point that could probably be expanded and explored a lot more, I bet!
