Back in 1994, Auger was the world’s first tension-leg platform, operating in the US Gulf of Mexico. A true deep-water pioneer, it was the first to float in water, moored to the sea floor thousands of feet below.
When production from its fields started to slow, Auger looked destined for decommissioning. But in 2010 its fate took a dramatic turn.
Using a new breed of seismic technology, Shell’s engineers discovered a whole untapped field - called Cardamom - hidden behind a vast salt deposit, 4 miles (6.4 km) below the sea floor. To reach its oil, they drilled one of the world’s longest wells.
In September 2014, Auger began producing new energy from Cardamom. This is the story of a legendary platform and the oil field that’s reinventing it - a success story unlike any other in deep water.

I worked on this rig, when it first started drilling and it was amazing. I was able to pay cash for college that year. :)

The engineering and technical advances that have came out of the oil industry is wild. Just shows what a lot of money and private enterprise focused on profits can achieve.
I’ve been on Auger a couple times and still get lost on it. It’s still in good shape for it’s age.

I worked on their a few hitches in the early 90's
Technology used there was brilliant innovation achieved by the petroleum industry.

what gets into the ground when oil and gas are taken up? what material has the ability to stabilize the subsoil as good as oil and compressed gas. Nothing can replace Oil and Gas so subsoil worldwide is and will be unstable.

Renewables are only a bit less damaging to the enviroment. Batteries for solar are very hard to recycle and often are not and they spill, releasing the extremely polluting acids inside them. Wind farms devastate bird populations and allow for insects to grow in number, which is devastating to farming.
You want clean and safe for nature? Go nuclear.

What do you do when the wind doesn’t blow? Try again. Oil is the best we’ve got at this point. If you feel so strong against oil, go buy an electric car. Just know that most electricity comes from power plants powered by natural gas, another product of offshore production platforms.
