If you're buying the 850 ranger, the battery compartment is very small , I cut some of it out to fit a 900mah battery. Still barely fits. Only disappointment. The pa-18 is awesome, no complaints. Dx9
I have this 850 and for some reason I’ve crashed it twice and made repairs. I felt like junking it but I keep fixing it because I can’t believe I am having so much difficulty keeping it in the air. My gps stopped working. I removed it from the top of the wing and 3 of the 4 wires were disconnected from the solder joints. As of now the plane is waiting for another attempt at flying it. I’ve watched other TH-cam videos on this plane and yours is the most clear explanation concerning the transmitter controls. Great job! I am now a subscriber.
Jay, I had no idea what to get my son who has been asking for a plane. Your videos demystified the buying process for me and saved me a ton of time and money. Thank you!
I've been flying RC since 1979 and you my friend are a very good flyer and teacher, I loved the way you explained everything, Thank you for the video I can show it to my grandkids that want to learn how to fly and make my teaching for them a lot easier hehe !
I started last year in October with the apprentice and got the wife involved in flying too . We now have a small hanger for our toys equalling 30 plus planes. I would love to add a ranger 1220 to my collection but I am a little farther away than others. Great content Jay keep Cheyenne flying it's a great couple hobby. Vancouver Island BC Canada
Because of you, I purchased a Ranger 1220mm for my Christman gift this year.. Still in one piece after two short flights and on final, 1ft off the ground, I got slow and yes, it will stall! Busted the prop. But dang, I was unprepared for it jumping off the grounf in less than 2 feet on takeoff. Tons of fun! Once I master this, Habu is next :) Thanks for your videos which helped me alot.
Aeroscout, yeah I was told by so many people to start with that so I did and I really love it . However, that ranger looks a bit more peppy and more agile. Great vid bro
Great video Jay, I like the Ranger 1220 but things like the "reflex" and other terms I didn't understand. I think I could master the Ranger and will investigate further.
Jay the ranger 1200mm is my fav bird to fly. I will tell you ive done some stupid things with this bird and crashed it twice for being dumb but wow so strong and easy to fix it just keeps flying better and better. Great Job my friend.👍👍👍👍👍
ive been playing flight simulators for about half a year now, gotten pretty good at it, i really want to see how that would translate into real life. i feel like it was be so fun to get an fpv set with a headset and camera and hook it up to the ranger, and just fly it like that, then its just a real life flight sim lmao. i really hope i end up getting that ranger for christmas, being only a month away.
I got good news. And that is that the ranger was replaced after I sent in a video of what was happening. They even said they would send it overnight. Jay was right again.😊
Jay I have watched this video quite a few times and you make it look so easy !! I just received my Ranger 1220 a couple of days ago and can't wait to get it in the air. One thing I would LOVE is if you were to make a video devoted to control inputs and exactly what they do ( with the picture in a picture screen ) You did show take off with full power and up elevator to get it off the ground. It really does look simple and I hope to see more videos on the Ranger 1220.
Good luck with it! I will definitely be doing a few more videos on the Ranger. Unfortunately the weather on Long Island has not been cooperating. As soon as it calms down and warms out Ill get out to fly it!
@Jay Kujan, I was looking at the Ranger 850mm, (the cheapest one) on its website. There are 2 versions, whats the difference between this one with the RTF and the one with the PNP (with Reflex V2). Since the PNP version is much cheaper.
PNP means plug and play. It means you have a remote battery and charger already. So you plug in your receiver.. add your battery. And fly with your remote. RTF means ready to fly, comes with everything needed to fly in the box
I am definitely thinking of getting the fms ranger I’m guessing it’s very durable and it’s a good price but all these planes look great great vid keep it up
Jay, I'm trying to get into flying and looking at getting the Ranger 1220mm but i can find the RTF online anywhere.. do you have any tips on where else to look? Appreciate the vids, and love you passion for everything RC!
I'm a beginner RC pilot. Not sure what Expo is exactly.... you're pretty good about assuming a beginner or first time viewer is watching your videos but it would help if you could explain the slightly more technical terms. Thanks.. PS I like the dynamic between you and cheyenne. Women like strong confident men!
I was thinking that when I was editing. Expo softens the first percentage of the stick movement. Adds a curve to a linear line. So if I say 30%… for the first 30% of the stick moving it won’t be as sensitive. Some people run higher numbers. (Essentially if your fingers are shaking or you are over-correcting .. expo will often all those stick inputs) I will show in a video soon!
I bought the FMS pa18 for a first plane was a mistake for me I crashed it so many times trying to fly it to slow and would drop a wing lol bought some smaller ones and worked up to a umx turbo timber evo after I got comfortable with that I tried the PA18 again and now I love it defiantly like the umx stuff better I’ve been teaching myself on my own and now can hover kinda with the evo super fun hobby
Yeah super rewarding once I got it! I bought the RtF originally and now have it switched over to my NX6 switched out the prop on it to a apc 12x6. Your videos actually what made me give the hobby a go and I’m glad I did
Hi would you be willing to do a video on uk supplier for rc planes and which makes and model would be ideal for beginners as only one of these planes we can get over here
Im looking to get into this hobby and will probably buy the recommended ranger. Iv seen on the website there is also an 1800mm ranger could anyone tell me what the difference is from the 1220mm? Same plane just bigger? TIA
My first watching one of his videos … I liked his style and philosophy such as “a big part of the hobby is learning to takeoff & land” … only thing is: I didn’t catch what he doesn’t like about the Ranger 1220. Can you tell me?
Seeing the way you fly I'm not sure I can trust your advice 😂🤣🤣🤣 FMS 1220 on order THANK YOU for showing us how great that plane is. The Australian summer isn't far away
Menard's has an inexpensive 12 ft electricians wire fishing rod that breaks down into 4 pieces. The hooked end can snag a branch and dislodge your plane. Once you throw one in the trunk of the car you will probably never hit a tree again.
That's how it always is. I bought a compressed air-powered bean bag line launcher Bazooka to retrieve planes and drones from the tree. Used it once and haven't used it since in 3 years. lol
Great video. Thanks. Heads up. I have a Sport Cub S2 and I found a real weakness in the brush motor that seems to last only a few hours. The little airframe is good, but I should have paid a bit more for one of these. I should have bought a UMX Timner Turbo Evo
Those are a ton of fun, the issue is with the gyro off they are very hard to fly. So not a plane you can really progress with. I love my little volantex warbirds though !
I recently got the 1220 MM Ranger and I’m not confident that I can fly it and not crash. I have already crashed it once and snapped the landing gear off. I glued the gear back on though. How should I get the confidence to fly it?
Big field. Ensure the gyro is on. And get it up high to feel it out. You can't crash if you are high up! Get the jitters out and then practice your approach. LIGHT ON THE STICKS!!!! Everyone likes to slam the sticks making the plane do crazy stuff. Have to be gentle!
I got the pusher ranger 400 for my son and it's awesome. Can't break the prop when he noses it in and it's super durable. Don't hate on them. When he gets better than he can get something that "looks like an airplane ".
Just bought my first plane, volantexrc sport Club 500mm, and if I conquer it LOL I'm going with that Ranger 1220 something about the look of it I just fell in love with it. I wanted to buy it first but I was afraid I would crash and burn LOL😅
Volantex are good planes. The warbirds fly a little better than the Cub IMO.. dont let that small plane dictate your opinion on these.. The bigger planes fly WAY better and easier.
Horizon Hobby Apprentice STOL has so many great features and flies so beautifully I'm amazed it didn't make the list . Great video lot's of fun to watch with some really great advice , I've searched the comments but did anyone rescue the Ranger. If you pick up a new one what color and will you please make a review video on that one.
If I was shopping for a beginner RC airplane, I like the 1220 Ranger; couple summers ago saw kids flying float versions. What’s the competition to FMS?
Hi bro I’m from Cyprus and I just bought the super cub 1300mm and I’m wondering if this plane can fly with 1300mah 3s battery and what time I will expect with this battery.Thank you ❤
I would love to know where you buy your extra battery's!, I'm thinking about getting the 850mm because I'm new to flying but I want a longer flight time so it would be helpful if I knew where you get your battery's from.
Genuine question here not any sort of diss. But what is the big deal about the last plane not automatically inputting down elevator to counteract the flaps? Because that’s how the flying really does work I understand it’s not as severe as this plane in real life but still it’s the same concept. So I’m just wondering if you just dislike that for the beginner side of it or what, Because that makes sense for it being a bad thing for people learning but you said once you get good and get a programmable remote that you would program it to do it automatically but to me that sounds a bit backwards?
I just took my Ranger to the lake and went for it. As long the water is relative calm, taking off and landing are the same as on solid ground. I even was doing it on choppy water w full gyro and it was fine.
What is your opinion on the 1800mm version of the Ranger for a first plane? I realize it doesn't come in a RTF option but lets say some impatient fool (cough) already purchased a radio and still doesn't own a plane would the 1800 Ranger be a good one to learn on? Asking for a "friend".
The PA-18 was my dream for a while, when I finally could afford it (from aliexpress) the brazilian government made a 92% tax for international buying (it goes higher than that) So now I either buy it for 3k or a carbon cub from the US for 5k bucks 🥲
Jay I have all three of those planes as well I’ll agree with you for the pa-18 and the 850mm but the 1220 Ranger I am yet to get that plane in the air. I tried everything from the 1300 to a 2500 and I can’t get that plane to fly.
I have a question for you because you talk so much about expo. I have a flysky i6 radio that you can program expo on and the radio is cheap like 50 bucks so could you use the same receiver and just swap radios?
My favorite RC TH-camr! Those are all great beginner planes that look scale on the ground and in the air.
I started with the Volantex Trainstar and have since added flaps, fatter tyres, and a pan/tilt FPV system. It's an awesome bush plane.
If you're buying the 850 ranger, the battery compartment is very small , I cut some of it out to fit a 900mah battery. Still barely fits. Only disappointment. The pa-18 is awesome, no complaints. Dx9
I use a 1300mah and just use a T-pin. Battery compartment was my only complaint on that plane as well
@@Jays_rcgarageWhere can i fly a 1220 mm ranger for free
I got to my local soccer field

That's PA-18 has my heart😍 Such a great STOL plane!! That Ranger is now donated to the RC tree gods😂😂
I bought the 1700mm for my second plane absolutely babying the crap out of it I'm so scared.
I just got the Ranger 1220. Such a beautiful plane and I am a little apprehensive about flying it. As you can guess I am relatively new at this hobby.
Get a simulator to practice on, some are even downloadable from FMS for free
I've been flying RC since 1979 and you my friend are a very good flyer and teacher, I loved the way you explained everything, Thank you for the video I can show it to my grandkids that want to learn how to fly and make my teaching for them a lot easier hehe !
1979!!! Would love to see some of those planes ✈️
It was your videos and your recommendation of the Fms 1220 ranger that got me into rc flying
I started last year in October with the apprentice and got the wife involved in flying too .
We now have a small hanger for our toys equalling 30 plus planes. I would love to add a ranger 1220 to my collection but I am a little farther away than others.

Aeroscout, yeah I was told by so many people to start with that so I did and I really love it . However, that ranger looks a bit more peppy and more agile. Great vid bro
Love your videos Jay! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and showing these 3 beauties!
Get a hook on a drone to get the one in the tree.
Thanks so much for this video and the info, Jay.
Very informational and entertaining!!
Great video Jay, I like the Ranger 1220 but things like the "reflex" and other terms I didn't understand. I think I could master the Ranger and will investigate further.
I bought a telescoping pole from HD to remove tree-bound planes. It helped me retrieve every plane thus far. Best tool for RC plane flying!
LOL, I like it. A tool knowing we will 100% end up in a tree 😂
I started on a $80 UMX Radian. Folding prop, no bad habits.
HobbyZone J-3 Piper Cub BnF is what i've got!!
5 yrs old flown at least 40 times never been crashed
Bwt can the first plane take off and land on dirt?

Very smart. So many throw money away on planes theyre unable to fly.
You'll be fine. Go fly
Thanks for the discount code! I just bought the 850 Ranger since the others were out of stock.
for the 850mm ranger, how long does the stock battery last and is there a battery that will last longer?
I agree with the terms with You tube tube
I love Star Trek and I love all the wee films about R.C. Planes and boats and all toy’s

Please make another video as well but on planes that are capable of vertical takeoff. Great video btw.
and jay r u able to make new fms codes that are like 30-35 % off?
Westhampton? Calverton?
