  • I got called a full frame snob. So today I ditched the full frame cameras and took out a (loaned to me) Canon G10 compact camera. Initially sceptical about this little camera I was very quickly won over by just how capable this little compact camera is.

The person who called you a snob is the snob. Your preference in cameras is nobody else's business. You have nothing to prove to anyone. Great channel.

Thank you. This video was a little tongue in cheek. Honestly, sensor size isn’t really that much of a big deal to me. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.

Had my G10 for over a decade now, bought a couple higher end full frame camera’s over the years. I honestly sold off everything but this camera. It does all I need as a non professional. Solid build, great features, long battery life, and enough functions to handle all my abilities. I actually bought this from a professional who used it as his “candid” camera when doing shoots or day to day stuff. He actually wanted to buy it back from me, had to decline.

Yes, the battery life in this camera is awesome. Seems like you have had the same positive experience as I, only I purchased mine brand new. I've toyed with selling it, as I have the M50 too, but I just can't bring myself to sell it!

Any experience how the g12 compares to the g10 in terms CCD Colors and image quality under normal circumstances?

I’m an amateur photographer, love taking pics of scenery & wildlife. I have a Panasonic LUMIX TZ80 & it’s a fab point & shoot. I wouldn’t know where to start with a full frame camera. Plus it’s light weight & easy to carry around. I’m glad you’ve given these type of cameras an airing. More please lol 🤓👍

The camera you use should never really be a factor in the images you take. This video was a little tongue in cheek - probably the wrong day and the wrong place to use the G10. I actually had a lot of fun with it and I’m going to look at getting something similar for myself.

Thanks for this. I have a Canon G12 and did not realize it has that ND capability. I bought a front end adapter for a polarizer which adds another ND full stop making it an ND16 - I hope to try that out soon. BTW the G10 & 12 are small sensor cameras but not the smallest. In fact it was about 70% larger in area than most other "small sensor" cameras. The crop factor for the 1/1.7" sensor it used is 4.6 vs. 5.6 for most other P&S compact P&S cameras. I am convinced that this larger size results in measurable improvement in IQ. It also uses a beautiful (now extinct) CCD sensor (you get cult points for that) - the last of this breed to do that. Yes, it is P&S but you can use it fully manually with nice hard dials & controls. You can also add wide or telephoto lenses using the same adapter. With the adapter it has a good 36-140mm (film equivalent) reach (the 28-36mm range is obscured by the adapter lens barrel). It shoots RAW and has image stabilization. It's built tough. Well designed and thoughtful camera - nothing cheap in its design or function. There is even a hard left-thumb dial to adjust IC two stops either way. Jewel of a camera, really - and the end of an era for that sensor size and type.

I have a G12 that had sensor dust (actually a fibre in my case), which was visible when shooting high apertures (well as high as the camera can go so f/8). As you've probably realised the camera has no inbuilt sensor cleaning function 😔, however I did pick up a tip that with some vibration it might be possible to dislodge the dust. So I stuck the camera on top of the washing machine (on a cloth to stop it sliding off) the next time I ran a load of washing, not really expecting much, but to my surprise the offending fibre is now gone from my photos! 😀 Might be worth a try for anyone with the same issue. My only minor problem with the camera now is hot pixels, but they're easy enough to edit out if the show up.

Happy to hear that, would you share how to store the camera?

  • @kmoecub
    @kmoecub 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    1. I have no idea what happened to that example during its life, but it is extremely unlikely to get any dust on the sensor. I bought my G10 in 2008, and have no such issue with it.
    2. At the time this was the go-to second camera for most photojournalists, and other professionals. It still holds up today, especially when shooting in RAW.

Hi Chris. I just want to say that I enjoy your channel and I hope you will continue it for many years to come. There are a lot of snobs in photography circles who focus too much on equipment, you don’t fit that description. What particularly comes through in your videos is your enjoyment of the environment and the photographic process. I used to enjoy the great David Thorpe’s channel, now yours fills that void.

    • @ChrisBaitson

Thank you Wayne I appreciate that. To me the gear doesn’t really matter all that much which is why I try and avoid making content around specific cameras or lenses too much. This video was a little tongue in cheek in all honesty.

Back in the days I had the G12 and I loved the camera. The ccd colors were ooc just great. After that I tried the S100, which was ok but not as good and not as fun as the little black brick. Maybe I buy one again just for fun. Bye the way, I bought an original 5d some months ago, which I use with a 85mm 1.8 as portrait machine. Phenomenal.

Great video! I love my G11, had it since release. What sold me was the quality of the noise at high ISO. Very monochromatic; almost film-like grain. And of all the different camera brands I’ve owned I found the Canon OOC jpeg colors were my favorites. Until Fujifilm and their film simulations.
All that said, what L Bracket is on the G10?!?!?!

The Sureshot G range is fantastic for a daily carry, and I've owned a G16 (no need for an ND on this one) since new, and it's always been a great experience when out and about with it.

At a time where most people rely on Iphone/Smartphone photos, this is a treat. These have larger sensors and more fun as you can be more creative. I've never had one, but these would be nice for travel.
