Actually, Alfalfa was 26 in 1955 when this was filmed. But he looked older than he was. What's interesting is that he could have had the makings of a featured character actor in TV westerns with his matured appearance. The unfortunate thing is that he did not mature well with his acting. If he had studied drama and refined his craft, he might have had a successful new career in television as did many veterans of the movies.

Ray Pointer Thing is, he didn't much like Hollywood. He turned down many roles for TV and feature films. The work he took as an adult was for quick cash. His passion was dogs and hunting. I have some wonderful anecdotes re him and Roy Rogers, which Carl's niece has given me for his biography. Roy and Dale adored Carl, and were his son's God Parents.

Thanks for adding to my understanding. However, the proof is on the screen. His acting was limited and a bit contrived regardless of how many offers he might have had. If he had such a disregard for Hollywood, he could have done like others who'd had enough and just leave, living elsewhere. But he stayed in the area anyway. That tells you something, I suppose. But it's great that he had people who cared for him in spite of the bad things that have been said about him.

My information on his feelings re Hollywood comes directly from his niece, Judy Hancock, the daughter of Carl's brother Harold. He stayed "in the area" because he had family here (I live in Los Angeles) and his dog breeding kennels. He also had a farm in Pretty Prairie, Kansas.
He had a great distaste for Hollywood. By "Hollywood" I mean--and previously meant--the business of acting. He had constantly voiced to his family and friends that he preferred his dogs and the outdoors to making pictures. My book covers this aspect of Carl's life in detail, and also dispels the many myths, errors and lies associated with his Our Gang years and death.

Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer was 28 when this filmed--hardly a "boy".

Alfalfa was so handsome. Shame the alcohol and drugs messed him up.
