  • Part 3 of our buying a new caravan series. We visited Highbridge Caravans, based in Burnham on Sea in Somerset. We looked at a couple of Adria caravans from the Adria Alpina 613 UK Colorado to the Adria Alpina 613 UC Missouri.

    It’s all a personal preference thing. We LOVE ours and must say that for us the build quality was a must and we bought new and have not had a single fault. However saying that we are currently filming a snagging list 😉 which will be up soon. 👍👍

    The adria remind me of bland modern hotel rooms, and things like somewhere to put your cuppa when in bed and like you said, no shelf for your phone etc if if you were charging them. It's like they arnt expecting you to be living in it like a home from home, just somewhere to sleep and be out of it all day. I like Luna caravans 😊

    I think you have to take credit for trying Adria. I see Why Andrew Ditton likes them as he likes that minimalist style. It’s not your taste. Rather than be disheartened, view it this way you have a clear view of what you want. I wouldn’t be surprised if you go for a Luna often what you do find will be closer to home. I’m looking at 2 berths oddly enough I felt the Adria was cold shame as they’re so well built

    Hi Dan.
    Don’t be downhearted. There are lots of different vans available. It is important to remember that what you are buying is basically a home and as such you need to feel at home in it. We have had two Swifts and one Lunar and have loved all three. We also looked at Adria and felt they were not for us. They somehow didn’t feel right. When you find the van you want you will really know that it is the one. If you like the styling of Lunar vans then in some ways that’s more important than how they are constructed or how many usbs they have. You can always add little extras to make it the van you want. It is more difficult to change the styling if it is not to your taste. Steve.

    At the NEC show last October, we spent an entire day walking around every single manufacturer looking for a replacement for our 2016 Swift Conqueror 630. We ruled out the updated 630 - too much plastic on the interior and then ruled out everything from everybody apart from Adria. We both agreed that the clean boutique hotel look was exactly what we like and what we wanted.
    Unfortunately, though, we rally with the Swift Owners Club and enjoy spending time with all the friends we've made over the years, so that's a high cost of moving to a non-Swift or non-Swift-distributed caravan - the Adria simply wasn't good enough to justify that cost.

    Finding these vlogs really interesting Dan, especially today's. It's interesting that you compared it to an Ikea showhome, because we thought the same, but for us the simple lines were appealing. But as you and Angela pointed out, its a good job we're not all the same haha!! On the other hand I think Chloe looked really comfy on those sofas :)

    Hi Dan, as with caravans as with cars in my case. I know within 10 seconds if a car I am looking at is for me. If i have to think abut it , then its not right for me.
    Apart from one terrible episode with an Abbey dealer special from Michael Jordan, we have have always had Coachman vans. They just seem to tick our boxes. Fit & finish is not as good as it was 15 years ago but we still go back.
    You must be like me, you just "feel it"
    Happy hunting & loving watching others g through it. LOL

    As you've said Dan, it's down to personal taste. Personally I think the Adria's look really smart. Very clean and modern but I get what you mean about the "ikea" look. German design tends to be quite minimalistic and you're either gonna love it or hate it. You can't deny the quality though! It will be interesting to see what you think of the newer Lunars.

    One thing I do like about the Adria’s is those high seat backs and headrests, most caravans have seat backs that are way too low for me.

    Dan - we were in the same position as you at the end of last year. We had a Lunar Quasar 546 and wanted more room. We liked the layout of Elddis Avante 840 but didn’t like the interior so we went for the Compass Casita 840. It is the same size van as the Elddis Avante 860 you looked at. Don’t get distracted by the 840 being a 6 berth. Like you, we are a family of 3 and we love the new van. So much room and you get that relaxing feeling as soon as we sit in it. Go and see Doug at Ennis Caravans - superb. We live in Torquay and brought ours from Doug, despite having another big Compass dealer (that you also visited in this video) just 60 miles from us. Happy hunting.

    Hi all
    It is really difficult when looking for a new van, we know exactly how you feel and you do at times get deflated. It's well worth going around them all as you are doing, because it does highlight that they don't always look as good in the flesh as they do in the brochures. I know I've told you to check out the dealer special Sprite models, but I agree with what you said about their interiors. We bought ours in 2017, and are glad we did because we don't like the 2018 models with their white clinical Dentist's waiting room look. I take it that none of the Coachman's tickled your fancy either? You are perfectly correct, and it is all personal choice and if you do end up with another Lunar, then so be it. Sometimes it's better the devil you know. Just for a bit of information, Lunar are one of the only manufacturers that still use sprung seating, all the other manufacturers use this new lighter foam filling, which is nowhere near as comfortable or as hard wearing. It might not seem like it at the moment, but you will get there in the end.

    Build quality and trouble free caravaning is what Adria provide. You should have visited Bristol caravans they are the main dealer and service agent for the west country. I personally don't like Highbridge as they strip second vans of all accessories which you then have to buy from them or preferably elsewhere. One friend who bought a second hand Lunar was not even given a step to get into the van.

    Dan, what is becoming apparent to me following you current search is that it seems that the current UK manufacturers are not cutting it in your search - could I suggest that you have a look at Knaus brand as we have Knaus Sport 500 FDK and are VERY HAPPY with finish inclusions etc. I suppose I’m saying look outside the square ? 👍😉🤔

    Fair play on your review and you may only have shown the 2 top end models but when looking at our new van we thought the Alpina range (top end) were no where near as good as the Isonso that we purchased. Nice finishing but no where near as practical. Hope you give them another try. Andrew Ditton's review helped convince us, and I'm sure you've seen it.

    Just been through what you are doing now, but with a Motorhome background rather than a caravan experience. Not only disappointed with quality and presentation of vans at dealerships, but also by the take it or leave it attitude of the ‘sales people’. Large dealership near M4 was particularly disappointing. Nearly new vans were filthy outside and totally unprepared inside. Ended up with a nearly new Elddis after being let down by a Lunar dealer. We finally focussed on which brands/models suited our lifestyle and narrowed down to five models and hunted for them. Fortunately, we found our ideal van at our second nearest dealership - small company but with a strong ethic of customer service. The big boys don’t always take so much care of their customers. Happy hunting, it will happen, but maybe not as quickly as you might want.

    Hi Dan & Family
    Thanks for your comments on Adria just a note we currently have our Luna cosmos 554 (twin bed ) on a seasonal pitch and we will take it off to do some touring later on one of my new friends has an adria and they have mega issues with after sales on a three month old caravan the front windows have pushed into the van and he was told to take it to a main dealer to have the work done on it they don't tour with the van He has been told to tape it up with duck tape and drive to Preston as the windows are not screwed into position they get bonded they will not come to the site to check it out so take care with after sales As for the Lunar Cosmos i had it new from December 2016 no issue as yet

    I wanted an Adria a few years before we actually bought our Swift. By the time I got to see the new ones at Highbridge last summer I just felt they were sparse, even if they had bigger beds for my growing brood (one of which will only sleep in the awning anyway!). We would have needed to spend extra to get the toys we ended up with in our dealer special, like the dual fuel hob, external lockers, gas etc. We had the Ikea conversation too. Great vans, but just not for us either. Partner was too tall for the Lunars, so we ended up with (his choice) of a Swift.

  • @scenicdti
    @scenicdti 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did like your comments on the bathrooms. We had an Adria Astella new in 2012, 8ft wide and toilet was so cramped was one of the factors along with others that made us change van. Also the 8ft width visiting small cls and meeting other traffic did result in more window scratches than we have had before or since. We just swapped to a new Unicorn Pamplona, which funny enough at NEC last year i disliked the interior colour scheme. But looking again this year it clicked for some reason. Also the central washroom ideal for us as privacy at each end of van. Not perfect but no van is, but as a compromise ticks 90 plus percent for us at this moment in time.

    At the end of the day its down to personal taste but adrias looked to clinical to me . This year at the NEC exhibition we bought a new dealer special based on the sprite major 4 EB. We had to make some compromise`s but we absolutely love it. Looking forward to see what you decide on. We have been caravanning for over 20yrs now but this is the first time we bought new. It was very exiting.

      I've done several motorhome holidays in Australia & when talking with caravanners on sites, it's always amazed me that Australian vans never had washrooms. Is this something that has started to appear on yours or is this why a lot of European (especially British vans) are now being shipped across used

    • @navaraute
      @navaraute 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most vans these days have showers and toilets pretty much standard except for the smaller vans. I think the popularity of vans imported from the UK is to do with the lightness of the vans. Our locally manufactured vans are pretty heavy and made for rough roads. We still have dirt roads in the outback and the vans reflect this. People are more and more wanting to leave the main roads and get to camps in the bush. Mine for example has a gross weight of 3.5t. We carry 60lts of drinking water and 200lts of general water in 3 separate tanks. We have 3x 150watt solar panels on the roof charging a 400 amp\hour battery bank. The van is higher for good ground clearance and has independent suspension. We can bush camp with no services or water and the only reason to leave is running out of water we carry. We have A/C for the heat and a diesel heater for the cold. The off road caravan is very popular in Australia at the moment.

    Hi Dan have to whole heartily agree with you on Adria, we had a look at them as well but did not like them, I said the same as you about looking like they were built by IKEA, however, we are currently looking at a dealer special from Glossop Caravans a Swift Celebration 580 which is based on Swift Challenger 580 perhaps you could cover dealer specials on your search for a new Caravan?

    Good video . I think It’s all down to personal taste. I like wat Adria do . they make good solid built caravans and now really Moderen looking ones . For years caravans wer too Traditional looking .same fronts etc with the we cupboard thingy . Now it’s all about the wrap around seats and wider space and sleeker look . Things the europeans hav been doin this years . To me its either Move with the times . Sleek and moderen Or stay with Traditional .

    I see a Bailey in your very near future...Unicorn Barcelona specifically. Mark my words. You can change the colours...go for layout first and foremost (which Bailey have sorted in my view) and then just re-cover seating/curtains and then add a Vango 5m Air Awning and you will be sorted. I am sure Bailey would look after you guys given your high profile and existing relationship with them. The current model has USB charging ports in the lights for heavens sake!

    Hi Dan. I am puzzled why you only looked at the Adria Alpina range as you'd said previously that you were looking at mid-range. You should look at the Adora, much more family orientated and not such a clinical look to them. Alpina is pretty much aimed at couples only and meant to replicate a boutique hotel style in my opinion.

      I agree with David, the Adora range looks really good as well and the Isonzo is my personal favourite but for the layout you are looking for, you'd want to look at the Seine. Unless you like bunk beds as singles in which case you have the brand new Adora Sava

    I'll rock the boat a bit and say that I quite liked the modern (Ikea) look of the Adria, well sort of. Anyway, that's not what I came here to say. I'm very new to caravanning and my first real van is an older (2000) Abbey Spectrum 419 twin axle. We bought it to test the water as it were, to make sure we'd enjoy caravanning before splashing out on anything too new or expensive. Well as it turns out we love caravanning but there was a bit of a surprise when it came time to upgrade. Like you're doing now, we looked at quite a few new and nearly new vans but we honestly could not find anything that suited us better than the old one we already had. Yes there were newer gadgets to be had and better heating options than the Truma system we have but hey - our 18 year old £3k Abbey had literally everything we could want. A new van was going to cost at least £20k, that's a whopping £17k difference, and for what? With £17,000 in the bank I can afford to do more than a few upgrades (most of which I can do myself anyway). The old Abbey is in great condition inside and out, it's a dream to tow and parts are readilly available. It has all the home comforts we want and an amazing end washroom and shower. So far my only expenses have been to fit a couple of USB socket (£20), replacing the old halogen bulbs with LED's and installing LED mood lighting (£50). That still left so much in the bank that we willingly forked out to get a quality, all wheel drive motor mover fitted. I guess what I’m saying here is that new or nearly new is not necessarily the way to go. I understand the desire to get shot of the kids before they turn 18 (12 is fine Chloe) but a van of that age can still give years of pleasure. Maybe you should consider this as a vlog topic for the future. If I was up to it and had the free time you have Dan, I might have even tried it myself!!!
    I wonder who will be first to suggest this is a typical Scotsman’s attitude 😊
    Anyway. Good luck with the search folks.

    Hello the trudgian family, have you had a look at the sterling europa caravans, we are on our third and think the are really good, the shower in particular is great. By the way love your informative videos. Regards Phil Murray

    Liked the video. as you know you will just walk in one and say ' yes this is it '.. but sadly we all go through the mill of looking and picking faults with them for us.. as i stated i realy fancied a bailey unicorn Alu tech construction Aldi wet heating and when we went in one it was like meah.. We ended up with sterling eccles sport 4 berth side island bed rear washroom and blown air heating.. what a lovely van that was..... if you like your lunar vans don't give them a miss, check them out.
    I have found some of older vans likesome motorhomes have so much better build quality on them.. or is it just me.
    Don't get put off keep looking and you will find your second home.

    After getting quietly excited after reading and watching videos about the 2018 Adrias I found them to be a complete anti climax upon viewing at Stewart Longton's in Chorley. I attributed this in large part to their being no carpets in the demonstrators, and the visible floor being nowhere near as nice as those caravans with (fake?) timber floors.
    Also the fixed beds were decidedly not comfortable.
    Like you, I felt very let down.....and almost guilty for not liking the Adrias.

    Lunars are leaky lol! I don’t like Adria at all I think the same ‘you are in IKEA’ and as a said before I don’t like Highbridge Caravans at all! I think you may like Coachman and Swift more. Cheers Oliver

    It's German build quality, great, but I agree with the Ikea analogy. Perhaps we're all a bit traditionalist in our tastes often? Adria are not for us either.

    I also forgot t say that the extra 6 inches makes all the difference (OOOH Matron!!!) It feels so much bigger and doesn't affect towing at all.

    Another great video :-) I also had a look at Adria a few weeks ago & the sales man said they are based on a minimalist design my friend who was with me came straight back at the salesman & said " Does only having your right leg count as minimalist as that's the only way you could use that loo" I didn't like any of the range at all we thought they was all over priced rubbish give me a Swift anytime sorry Adria but it's Keine Punkte from me,

    i thought you really liked the elddis avante 860? no mention of it today, did you look at the 840 also? we have a dealer special supreme 840. a lot of spec and for the same price as standard.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Avante 860 is on our "liked" list - so when we have visited all the manufacturers we want to visit and have a final list, we will critique these even further.

    • @TheBlakelyFamily
      @TheBlakelyFamily 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would really look into the dealer specials on this model before you rule it out as the difference is day and night between standard and the specials as they have a lot of upgrades like more and bigger skylights, better upholstery and colours, more external lockers, upgraded steadies etc particularly the supreme, osprey and Chatsworth models. You can feel and see more bang for your buck.

    • @martinkendal2486
      @martinkendal2486 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andre Blakely hi I couldn't agree more we picked up our new elddis 840 from Preston caravans ( their dealer special is called supreme) a couple of weeks ago you get a lot of useful extras for your cash. Most of the extras are taken from the crusader and buccaneer range. We've swapped from a top of the range crusader tempest and our new van feels just as plush. Glad you are pleased with your van aswell - like you said it's definately worth a look !

    • @TheBlakelyFamily
      @TheBlakelyFamily 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly Martin, when you've seen the standard avantés'/casitas and then seen the well specced dealer avantés aswell as the compass casitas specials, totally different van when you step back into a standard avante or casita. Supreme is definitely the most specced special of them all.

    • @martinkendal2486
      @martinkendal2486 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andre Blakely You've obviously looked into this in as much detail as we have . We spent months and months researching and looking at all the dealer specials . We narrowed it down to the glossop one and Preston caravans one but when it came down to it we much preferred the supreme . Someone else on here has said they didn't like the bed in the 840 because you have to get out of it at the bottom . Personally it's not that much effort to get out of the bottom.of the bed and we'd rather not waste space in the van having space along each side of the bed ! We don't get in and out of bed that many times in.a day!! We just love our new caravan like you !

    Its a bit cheeky using your vlog to ask if anyone has been thankfull they had ATC fitted, or is it a case of if you load your caravan correctly you shouldnt need it. I do enjoy your observations.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest Linda, we have the ATC fitted and only noticed it twice. Once when we were travelling down a farm track (super low speed) and the other was on a bumpy B road at about 30Mph, in both cases the brakes came on and I thought something was wrong with the car.
      I can't help re than that - but perhaps others have a better experience of it for you.

    First time ive seen inside an Adria - Horrible!!! Very plain (very German!) The toilet is designed for a right hand door (Euro type). The dinning room was like an Ikea showroom. Bailey Unicorn all day for me :)

    As you say it's all about personal choice
    The Adria are no doubt a good van but as you say very flat pack and not very homely more surgical
    All I can say is we love our Delta TS 2017 apart from the selves very thin and no selves around the bathroom mirrors
    My wife says it must have been designed by a man
