Not many teams in the leage can have 6 of the top 9 out and stay anywhere near .500. Defense and goaltending have not been great. Getting healthy will help with the defense, and if the defense is better the goaltending will also improve. Defense will never be top 5, and goaltending wont be top 10, but that isnt who they are. The big question is will they get healthy in time to salvage the season.

There is no rationale behind it but the team just hasn't felt the same without Landy. Missing a teammate, a friend and your captain seems to have them scrabbling and just ever so slightly 'off'. That on ice leadership role has never been filled and having Gabe around the club but not competing must be a strange situation for the team. I still worry that he will never be able to return but if Landy can hit the ice again I think the Av's will get a fire under them again and restore that missing key piece. Again, no actual reason behind this but just a feeling with the team.

So their goalie situation has been very interesting within the last 10 years. Starting with Craig Anderson. Then simyon varlamov and both of those guys did okay keep in mind that these guys were in Colorado during the rebuild. After varly came grubauer for a couple of years and he did well enough to get that contract in Seattle. Kuemper want them this Stanley Cup and then got that contract in Washington. So I thought that those two goalies played well for the Avalanche to get those contracts. The grubauer contract has been terrible. Kuemper not much better. So those two guys played really well with the Avalanche so you can think that the coaching was pretty good at the time. Georgie may not even get another job in the league. He may be in the KHL next year. Problem is that they don't have money to go out and get a decent goaltender in the long-term. They have to pay rantenen this offseason and you would think it would be north of that 10 million per year. Remember if the cap goes up the salaries go up and you can't tell me that as the cap goes up the team saves money because that's just not the case. Salaries just follow the cap. Colorado is in big trouble. Their window to win was this year.

The thing about the bad defensive numbers is that it's not just the defensemen and goalies, but the whole team. when you look at the injuries/suspension, you have Nichushkin who should be a Selke finalist every year, Lehkonen is probably their second best defensive forward behind Nichushkin, Wood is a key penalty killer, and Drouin actually turned into a very trusted player in the d zone last year. Getting these guys back in the lineup isn't just an offensive boost, it's an even bigger defensive boost.

Avs play really tight when Georgiev is in net. Trying to play perfect usually leads to the opposite.
Injuries are killing us because the Avs rely on the defense of their forwards in their scheme. Lehkonen and Nichushkin and even Drouin to a lesser extend all play a 200 foot game that the Avs severely lack right now.
Also, Mikko Rantanen is slumping HARD. No goals since opening night if I remember correctly or one of the first couple games.
    Avs need their players back.

They seem to lack any real cohesion, instead relying on a handful of really good players to do 90% of the work every game. Their goaltending has been pure trash since 2022 as well. Not the teams fault necessarily, but they have maybe the two most annoying home announcers too, that act like the Avs are some God tier team even when they're playing like crap, and the other teams "just got lucky!" Idk, just can't stand the Avs, which makes me sad since they were the team responsible for getting me into hockey in the first place.

I've been watching the games. The most consistent defensive liabilities have been Georgiev, Manson, Girard, and Makar. While not solely to blame, Georgiev lets in a lot of soft goals. Annunen has played much better and deserves the starting position. Manson is too slow and is often out of position. Girard is overly aggressive and gives up a lot of of scoring opportunities. Cale has been getting beat physically and missing coverage down low. To say that top 6 forwards don't have an affect on overall defensive play is a lie. The question is, how much of a difference will they make when they return. In the case of Cale, i think they'll make a huge difference. In the case of Manson and Girard, they probably won't do much. The Avs defensive woes are nothing new and imo, Manson and Girard need to go.

I hope not. I want them to miss the playoffs.
The Avalanche are so focused on making the playoffs for what will amount to an inevitable underwhelming run that they keep aggravating this stuff and wasting time.
Part of me wonders if they are better off with what happened to Vegas. Miss the playoffs for a year, rest, come back healthy and make an ACTUAL run for the cup.
Also, I just can't see this team winning a cup without Landeskog at the moment.

I'm kind of in the same boat. They run themselves into the ground the last couple of seasons getting the playoffs.

IMO Avs need to move on from Landy, and trade for a goalie. McFarland is wasting time here…

Also lmao @ all the Altitude brainwashed Avenues fans crying about being injured as if other teams don’t go through worse than them constantly

@@ak8ishAre you serious? John Cooper wasn't fired after losing in the playoffs the last 3 seasons and actually regressing. Bednar isn't getting fired. There literally isn't a better coach right now. All the good ones are with teams.
