I agree, I don't think normal spirits have the power to do this. These scratches were made by something different, probably by something that wasn't human at some point. Also at the end when he says Heather started screaming claiming a shadow figure kept getting closer it reminded of me something I was looking into called shadow beings and if you see a shadow being with a hat you should run.
