It would seem easy enough for MLB to declare the situation unacceptable and mandate changes. But this is a delicate dance of corporations with a partnership worth more than $1 billion. The offspring of the relationship is a problem child. But the league and its official uniform supplier, Nike, have been reluctant to take responsibility.
Original reporting: theathletic.com/5388778/2024/...
In a statement, MLB praised Nike’s “expertise in bringing innovation and design improvements” and its “extensive multi-year process” in arriving at the 2024 uniforms while acknowledging there are issues for Nike to address.
“Nike chose the letter sizing and picked the fabric that was used in these jerseys,” MLB said. “Fanatics has done a great job manufacturing everything to the exact specifications provided by Nike. As part of this significant transition, Nike will continue to explore necessary adjustments to certain elements of the new uniforms to meet the needs of MLB Clubs and players.”
Such gentle jabs are as far as MLB has gone in putting any of the blame on Nike - while accepting no fault of its own. Nike’s statement Tuesday was only its second since players began complaining about the uniform fit and design this spring, and the first time the company has said anything about the product needing change.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Nike is being cheap. I want Majestic back.
This is why my Cubs jersey is Majestic and I will never buy another jersey probably.
I don't think nike would have ever got the contract, If majestic didn't sell to fanatics.
Unfortunately, this is an epidemic hitting every company and every industry. “How can we spend less while making the customer spend more.”
My first thought also, but then I remembered Fanatics now owns Majestic... 🙁
@@danedefense2046 solution: don't spend on it
It’s an economic scam. It cost a lot of money to make ‘authentic’ uniforms that the fans can buy. So they bacially decided to go knockoff and call it “authentic” so they can still charge premium prices but manufacture them as cheaply as the asian knockoff
Your comment perfectly embodies what Fanatics has done to the sports retail industry.
The Asian counterfeit jerseys are much better quality than the new authentic MLB jerseys, at 1/10 of the price.
This is exactly it. They are lowering the quality of on field jerseys so these same “authentic” are still $300+.
@@psychoof78 ive bought those knockoffs for a while and I am starting to become more and more convinced that the "knockoffs" and the "authentics" all come from the same factory except the "authentics have marginally better quality control. It makes no logical sense that a buttoned up short sleeve shirt with some front and back stitching should cost $300 besides insane markups.
that's called capitalism baby! 💰
To Joe Buck’s point, a professional ballplayer deserves a professional uniform. They have worked their entire lives to have the privilege of wearing a uniform that most of us will never have. Their names should be large, their name, number and team name should be EMBROIDERED. This is absolute garbage from the worst of the 4 major sports leagues in the United States.
4 major sports? Whats the 4th? Bc all there is here in the states is the BIG 3 major sports. NFL NBA MLB. Nothing else and sure as shit isnt soccer
@@ItsHeavyHitterNation I hate to break it to you, but just because YOU don’t like hockey, that doesn’t mean the entire country is with you.
@@Milehighmez15 lmao get outta here brah 🤣💀 ngl i was thinking you were talking about soccer. I respect hockey more than soccer so ill give ya that. My bad dude
@@ItsHeavyHitterNationhate to break it to you, but there’s a bunch of these things called Illegal Immigrants coming over in spades who ONLY care about soccer. Wouldn’t doubt if soccer ends up taking over that 4 spot by this time next year lol
@@LawrenceofMinnesota hate to break it to ya. But they dont mean shh and will be deported once the man takes back whats rightfully his! Soccer will never take off in the states!
This, and all of MLB’s issues, can be traced back to one root problem, an absolute clown of a commissioner. Manfred must be removed now or baseball will be dead by the time he finally retires.
Could not agree with you more. He has to go.
I completely agree with you, however it won't happen. This is the same problem the NHL has had with Bettman since 1992... as long as the owners are raking in the cash they won't make any changes that might impact that, especially one that might seem like the peasants (fans) are right. Remember, the commissioner represents the owners, thats it...
Probably not soon enough for most but he plans to retire in 2029
He can’t go away fast enough. I’ll never forgive him for that publicity stunt he pulled with the all star game in 2021
@@tomeddy3664 Yep. NFL same thing. They are not going to represent the fans; they represent the owners. The fans get screwed. At this point I don't think MLB is worth saving. Let it die.
The worst year in jersey sales should fix this garbage
doubt it. fanatics is all about cheap, dogshit products. so i bet they’re making just as much or more in profit. look at nearly anything in recent past. hell video games. consumers have been complaining about the “quality” of product and still terrible product is being produced while those companies are making record profits. don’t see “low sales” making any difference
Heard from a former Yankee executive, "They should be wearing cotton".
"Polyester is not a natural fiber"
Where’s George Costanza when you need him!
Babe Ruth was nothing but a fat, old man with little girl legs.
Shamefully underrated comment
Several corners were cut in order to maximize profit. At each cut corner, an executive was showered with praise. Repeat that a few times and you end up with a product that looks like this. Many High School teams have better jerseys than the MLB product.
I NEVER thought I'd utter this phrase... but here it goes... I miss Bud Selig
Like if Bud Selig was a better commissioner than Manfred. They were both terrible awful commissioners. But you could argue that Landis was the worst.
@@wizardoferror9942 Selig was a bumbling idiot but Manfred is a rat. There is no doubt that both are better than Landis though!
How Nike managed to get the PA to approve these jerseys is beyond me
Iron on letters are an absolute joke. Little leaguers have better quality unis than the pros now…
Agreed. The iron on stuff is pee wee grade garbage
It’s time to just scrap these jerseys and go back to the old one.
For real. I hope it's not too late for the MLB to just do this
It feels to me like when the military (Navy for me) decides to change uniforms every few years for no apparent reason other than someone high up on the food change had an idea to validate their salary.
Blue camo. I was there for the implementation and it being taken away. 😂
This has “Costanza” written all over it.
The decision to shrink down player name lettering is 100% to clear up room for even more advertising space. No other explanation for it. Owners are happy to squeeze every last dime out of this "product" at the cost of tradition and fan experience.
Am I the only one wondering what you're talking about? MLB jerseys don't have any advertisements on them. Maybe the replicas do, I wouldn't know about those. But there's no in-game advertising going on with the uniforms for the owners to prioritize.
@@redlion145He's talking about what is coming. I watched the Yankees versus the Mexican team they're in spring training and the Mexican team had no less than 30 logos on them. It was absolutely disgusting and it's a sign of where this is heading. Which is exactly why I was so pissed off when they allowed the one logo on the sleeve per team.
@@redlion145 on the Royals game worn Jerseys there is. QT patch on the sleeve..what are you talking about?
@@andystreepy3146 Congrats, you found a single example. Some might say the exception that proves the rule. Anyone else in MLB doing ads on jerseys? No? I rest my case.
@@redlion145 Google mlb teams with ads on jerseys...there are a bunch.
I remember when Nike took over the contract they purchased all of majestics’ inventory. Did that inventory finally run out causing Nike to make their own? This is such an issue with the new stuff. Why is it so difficult to go back when there wasn’t a problem with literally anything? Players hate them, fans hate them so what exactly is MLB doing here? But then again they allow angel Hernandez to continue being an umpire so why are we questioning anything at this point?
Whether they can go back or not depends on a few things.
A: Does the MLB contract allow the MLB to force them to go back or is the MLB bound to accept whats supplied?
B: Did Fanatics retain the machines, IP and suppliers for the old Jeresys?
C: Is Manfred a person or a very advanced Animatronic operated by a megalomaniac mouse and his well meaning but rather dimwitted buddy trying to take over the world?
Nike did this in the NFL. Their first year was marred by sweat panels and other issues.
Then they kept the same shape for replica jerseys…except we don’t wear shoulder pads lol. I have really big shoulders, yet my Fitzgerald and 🫣 Ray Rice jerseys from that era fit so awkwardly.
Fast forward to 2016 and I got sent a Texans authentic Watt Jerseys and they fixed that issue. So they’ve gotten away with it before…
@@jeffrey.a.hanson
Wild right?!? Maybe like the nfl, they’ll make the necessary changes. This seems way worse in mlb than the nfl. Players and fans are more vocal about the poor quality. Even had a tigers player tearing his pants sliding into home…
I will not be buying an MLB jersey until this gets fixed. I’m glad I have plenty of much nicer older jerseys. These look like knockoffs aesthetically in quality it is ridiculous to think someone would pay hundreds of dollars for these.
MLB most not have done their due diligence. If NASCAR has had issues with Fanatics and only has them as an ecommerce partner, having them produce on field products isn't the best solution.
I know, I dread them producing the new NHL jerseys next season, because I have a feeling that they are going to screw those up as well
Never buying another jersey again…for any sport
I’ll acknowledge that Nike really f*cked up but Fanatics continuing to buy out and monopolize the professional sports retail industry needs more widespread coverage. I worked for two and a half years at Lids, and after Fanatics became the new parent company, there was a stark downward shift to both the store and employee modules, plus poor customer service for online orders. I’m okay with Fanatics being the scapegoat if it means a more reputable brand w/ better manufacturing practices takes its place.
I like 47 brand hats and clothing
We have an oddly similar problem in Ontario with license plates. The provincial government decided to issue blue license plates that were new, improved, and the greatest thing in license plates ever. The only issue is that...well, they're useless. They can't be seen or read easily and there are safety issues. The government had no choice but to revert back to the old white license plates. Unfortunately, they haven't recalled the blue ones and over 100,000 are still on the roads.
Nike should learn from our provincial government and skip to the part where they revert back, making sure to recall the new flawed jerseys in the process.
A license plate thar cops can’t read is a good thing
The Pirates now have 2 A’s on their white jersey because the A has to be cut on the right hand corner. Looks so dumb. The A was always perfectly centered. That is driving me crazy more than anything.
Vapor chassis is corporate speak for making them cheaper.
Reminds me of the NHL jersey debacle when Reebok took over in 2007. The new technology was so good at moisture wicking, sweat was pooling in players' gloves and skates. I think it took Reebok not even half a season to come out with Edge 2.0 which was basically going back to air knit fabric. I will say the Edge 1.0 were more comfortable.
My slow pitch softball jersey is nicer than these. And it was $45. lol.
Until Manfred is replaced by a commissioner who truly CARES about the game, these stupid changes will continue. Manfred has set baseball back decades
I'm not sure how this is surprising to anyone who had to deal with Fanatics before. They're quality is absolutely horrendous
The old ones “were not fine” to MLB brass and NIKE. They cut corners on purpose to save a couple million, and thought everyone was too stupid to realize.
I saw the Diamondbacks elite jerseys in person. I think the what is looking cheap on TV looks really cheap in person. I'll use local teams as an example. The Giants had 3 layers of twill on their numbers and letters previous to this year (gold shadow, orange, then black) the A's 2 layers (yellow then green). Now it is one layer with all colors dyed in it, it loses depth and craftsmanship. This is why the Yankees removed the white layer behind the blue on their road jerseys. The same can be said for the patches it is a loss of depth and craftsmanship. One side note. With advertisement patches teams should remove their team patches for special events including the World Series, Jackie Robinson Day, etc. Adding patches to the front of the jersey looks bad.
I could solve this non problem in about 5 seconds. Go back to the old ones that had no issues. Done.
I'm forced to agree with JOE BUCK?! When JOE BUCK is correct about something, that's a sign you really screwed up(or a sign of the apocalypse).
I made the huge mistake of buying an Anthony Volpe jersey that cost $409 yes you read that right and when it finally came in I was immediately appalled by how awful these jerseys were and went online to look for the 1-800 number and called them and said that I want an immediate refund and to take this piece of shit back. They tried to tell me that since it was custom made they cannot accept any returns and I said that’s ok I’ll dispute the charges with my bank and get the refund then and sure enough got the refund and still kept the jersey to which I couldn’t even give the damn thing away and to think that some players like Judge, Ohtani, Acuna are going for damn near $500. What a fucking joke.
Thanks for the update. 100% agree. Was watching the Dodgers play on the road in their gray jerseys and they looked so unprofessional. To not have the tops and bottoms color matching.. I mean really? That's like the most basic thing. Get the color right and make it all match. Top and bottom doesn't match. That looks works than my kids little league uniform. They need to fix this.. so they don't continue to look like complete clowns.
the "performance" is making more profit for nike and fanatics.... this way theres no lead time if a player goes off in 2 days they can have jerseys shipping to customers so if a player goes off for 2 weeks then dies off they get all the jersey sales its all about selling jerseys to fans not about players performance thats total BS its about cheap fast fan gear that they can say the same as the players and charge thru the roof
It’s all an excuse to use more inferior material. Have you ever heard a player say “man if my jersey was 2 ounces less, I would’ve swiped that base” 😂
Thank you for covering the mismatched grays! I thought I was going crazy! Plus, what happened to other color uniforms? Seems like the teams only have 2 colors.😢
I’m really glad that I replaced a lot of my older jerseys over the last year or two before these new ones hit. I won’t be buying these.
I went to a game yesterday and sat 16 rows from the field, and I couldn't see the last name of either right fielder. What's the purpose of even putting the name on the jersey at that point?
not buying a single one - enjoy your surplus stock
the small letters look dumb as hell on TV. i'm not buying one so don;t really care. heard they were like paper.
I watched a Yankee Spring Training game and was shocked to see Aaron Judge's jersey completely darkened by perspiration. It was not something I have ever seen on a Yankee grey away jersey. Not normal
My wife got me a Joe Burrow shirt and bengals hoodie from fanatics and the shirt literally was black and brown, I was shocked by an official NFL gear , I sent the shirt back immediately and cancelled the hoodie for a full refund. Will never buy anything from them again.
Good thing these uniforms were extensively tested with players before they rolled them out. They all seem to know a lot about the uniforms, and they were clearly very involved in the development.
On a side note, I'm surprised the fact that some teams are having to reschedule or cancel their promotion nights featuring specialty jerseys because these new and improved uniforms are on backorder.
Just a FYI about your point at 11:38... "The person said Fanatics raised concerns to Nike this winter about the varying gray tones. In most cases, the person said, Nike said it fell within their window of variance and instructed Fanatics to use the fabric."
All jerseys are basically swingman jerseys even the authentic 1s
Who wants plastic paper on a t shirt
Chafin!! Loved our "chubby reliever" (his words, not mine! 🤣) when he was here in Phoenix!!
Just use the old ones. Classic example of finding a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist.
Glad for your efforts on this topic. Thank you.
Mentioned at the end, but MLB should have been aware of this for a while. The jerseys were used in the ASG and no one complained. The Royals also used these for an entire Spring Training
Talk about falling off the rails.
"Little accountability from MLB" - Does MLB even know that word exists?
Nike has been going downhill for a while. Let us not forget the "tear away" jerseys they implemented in the NBA 😂
I had fully planned to buy a jersey but these things are total garbage so it’s not happening
Come on. It’s the use of cheap import materials… let’s be real here. That was a bogus face saving statement. They just strapped a fancy description on it to market it to the consumer. We’re all being taken advantage of..
If this is on Nike and not Fanatics, they need to lose their license. These are kids' iron-on t-shirt jerseys.
What was the material of previous jerseys?
i'd have to look at the label. very synthetic obviously, but not dri fit for sure
The fact that there shirts are being darkened by sweat means that the sweat is being absorbed by the material and it’s not wicking away to be evaporated. This can actually hinder performance and not Aid in it.
Props to keeping up the coverage on this.
I love that you're covering this so thoroughly
Why not fix it by the all star break…they got more than enough time for all these jerseys to be fixed by then
How are merchandise sales of the new jerseys compared to the old ones? I own a couple of "real" Verlander jerseys from his time with the Tigers, but I'm not motivated to buy a new-style jersey.
Went to my first Reds game of the year, sat first row and whoever approved these jerseys should be fired. The names on the back look ridiculously small. They look like the lettering from the women’s jerseys last year. It’s especially bad on players with short names like Cruz, Baty, Diaz, etc.
Excellent coverage of this-exposure of the different venders and swabs of fabric needs more traction. No more "exploring options" to remedy. ACTION! required. nike must go.
In the summer time, the light weight jerseys would be nice... but I doubt that's worth having cheap uniforms with a laundry list of problems.
I wonder how difficult it would be to simply go back to what was being made by Nike/Fanatics from 2020-23. I can’t imagine it would be *that* hard to do.
History repeating itself. 12 years ago, Nike took over the NFL jerseys and there were complains about the jerseys. After a couple of washes the collar would fade badly. Issues with material and also various parts would discolor greatly when wet making the jerseys look terrible on TV. MLB should have learned from this when dealing with Nike, but I guess all they saw was the money.
I’m a Mariners fan and I will NEVER buy another Mariners jersey the way that Fanatics/Nike have made them. We previously had the best name plate in the league and now we have THE WORST. They changed the font on the back our navy blue road uniforms to something basic. Some of the team’s name plates don’t look too bad but ours look absolutely horrible. The navy blue on “Mariners” on the home uniform isn’t Mariner navy either. It’s way lighter.
Let’s just call this what it is: Nike and Fanatics are making cheaper jerseys and calling them “authentic” to rip the fans off. And MLB approved it. Why? Because MLB doesn’t care about their fans at all. They’ve made that clear for the last decade.
Another big issue is some jerseys aren't ready yet. Like Seattle's Sunday (Cream I believe) ones are apparently not going to be worn until May or June when Nike/Fanatics can get them to the club.
It's Nike. It's not just players apparel but MLB Staff is having issues this year too.
How about the issues of availability? Some teams have not even got their jerseys in-time for games. Also, as an international fan I have to buy my merch online, however most teams only have home jerseys or older uniforms available for purchase.
Fans, do not buy any new jerseys. Don't buy that crap.
Summer is coming... Do the braves have grey jerseys? It gets hot in Atlanta
Brodie, (I'm at about a minute in and you may get to this point later on) what about something as simple as official team colors? I think it was the Cubs players that notices that the Cubs colors just looked different on these new dumpster fire jerseys. Absolutely no one is willing to own this mistake. I just hope fans aren't buying them, but we know they are because many aren't really tuned into this conversation because they're perhaps regular Joe type fans (which is fine). I just want them to be aware that the money they're spending is being spent on trash and they should hold off for a bit.
But this is just how stuff goes (especially in the world of tech). We are supposed to want 'new' and 'improved' as consumers and if we don't see that from companies we like I'm guessing the thought becomes fans are just indifferent about gear and nothing feels like its moving. Well, the world doesn't have to move at such a brisk clip. Right now MLB and every other company under the sun wants to be a 15 second TikTok video, building trash product only meant to die for the sole purpose of being able to sell us more junk. ZERO quality, just trashy nonsense. I'm out on these jerseys. I don't buy every year, but I will occasionally as new jerseys or players hit that I like. Once the Nike logo landed I was out, but this? Forget it. Keep 'em.
Teams should just be in charge of their own jerseys
Let’s not forget that we’re not in summer yet and once humidity rises, these jerseys will be soaked!
I'd be interested to see what the difference in sales is between this year and last year.
Nike made my college unis in 2004 as part of an update and the greys were the best quality I have played in.
Perfection.
Yes, the tops were a bit heavy for hot days, but they improved that in 2010s.
The Yankees road uniforms looks like a sweat suit
They look awful. I’m glad that the older jerseys on MLB are still available and cheaper than this current crap.
Mr. Brazil, let us know if the NHL is going to back out of the Fanatics uniform deal now that MLB is dealing with bad situation.
The fact there isn’t one Costanza reference on here is insane
Wait…they aren’t even embroidered jerseys? As a fan, I’ve only ever bought embroidered jerseys because those silkscreened ones look cheap
It almost seems like they started with the Yankee's uniforms and then made everyone else's design fit. The size of the numbers and the placement of the MLB logo on the backs of the Yankees uniforms look normal without having names. Plus, the Yankee's uniforms don't have any piping on them which looks cheaply applied on the uniforms that have it.
The names/numbers on the back look like those from a video game. That’s why they look so cheap and cheesy.
Riley Greene split his pants today sliding. Pathetic.
The A’s jerseys are a notably different green to their caps. Mariners didn’t have their cream uniforms in time for their first Sunday home game, but I know some fans do. How are fans getting them before the teams?
Likewise the Rangers similarly didn’t have their City Connects for their last Friday home game, neither did the Brewers.
I don’t know why they don’t sell fashion first jerseys for fans as well? like surely most fans who wear jerseys don’t actually want athletic wear when they do. Sell actual replicas, sure, but sell something designed for sitting in the stands as well…
Would love to see MLB return to traditional-style uniforms. No manufactors logos or advertisements just the team patches and league logos.
When is MLB going to realise this isn’t going to go away like all of the messes they’ve created
As a Blue Jays fan who saw their first game in the Nike home whites last night, I can attest that the slimmer fit and smaller lettering is not flattering to the more “generously proportioned” Blue Jays…and we seem to be getting more of them thanks to Shatkins.
The knockoffs look better than the real ones. People kept asking me where I got mine. Surprised when I told them they weren’t real ones
Harper flat out refused to wear the jerseys the other day. Wore his 2023 jersey. Lol. The unis and city connects are absolutely atrocious.
This worries me immensely for NHL sweaters next season... The trend of make it cheap cheap cheap, is alarming. I realize that Nike seems to have designed this failure in MLB, but Fanatics has top to bottom design and production for NHL next season. We will see if this was Nike or Fanatics issue.
Get an adidas one while you can
Luckily next season it won’t be an issue, but in 2025, it will be.
@Milehighmez15 Nay, it's next season. 24-25 season. 23-24 (this season) is last Addidas season.
@@dumbcow1 You’re right about that, but the sweaters aren’t actually changing next year. That’s gonna happen in 2025.
Ah, so that's why the Padres looked like they were playing in their jam-jams last weekend!
Institutional arrogance they dont have to listen to anyone in the course of executing and that always ends up like a crap show in every business or organization.
That's corporate America making those decisions to be cheaper not caring about the product
I don't know when the trend started for announcers To refer to players by their initials but it needs to stop
This year I was planning on buying myself a new Royals jersey for myself. Due to all the craziness with the new stuff I ended up purchasing a game issued jersey from 2022 for $163 at an auction. Problem solved!
They look like the iron on uniforms we had in little league only using cheaper fabric lol
Thank God they haven't screwed up the hats, yet. Just leave those alone.
Nike is also catching heat over the flag design on the England national team jersey. Whoever is in charge of all these changes either needs to stop doing drugs, or start.
I purchased the official Nike jersey, fit like a dress. Material felt cheap. So much $$ for so little. Returned it sooo disappointed.
Bottom line…..going cheap on the jersey’s does not increase jersey sales to fans.
I remember majestic authentic jerseys were about $250 now nike wants to charge $400 plus for some garbage . Nike made the smaller numbers and removing of white outlines (Yankees) to MAKE MORE PROFIT BY SAVING MONEY. Smaller numbers , no embroidery and no white outlines means less money to spend on making these garbage jerseys . Even if the jersey is lighter is make no difference in performance !!
When the jerseys were being supplied by a majestic. They didn’t seem to be any problems. I have several authentic majestic jerseys. Very high-quality. I’ve also noticed that the names on the back of the jerseys are smaller. Sometimes harder to read on television. Why did they make all these changes? Things seem to be good last year was Nike now they’ve made all these changes for the worse. Unbelievable.
I watched a game the other day and the camera got a close-up shot of a player's name. The letters on the name were already fraying. That is fine for an MLB team but for fans who buy these, it is a rip-off.
