Este partido lo pierde HOlanda porque entró al juego de Argentina. Mucha fricción. Quizas con Cruyff la cosa hubiera sido distinta. Argentina supo golpear en el momento preciso y ese dia el matador Kempes estuvo gigante.
I remember watching this game as a 7-year-old kid and remembering what a battle it was with bloodied jerseys and sometimes outright nasty tackles. What I did not remember is how good the Dutch were. Amazing football to watch - still looking elegant, dynamic, cool and tough where necessary. The Argentines had the big sounding names like Kempes, Ardiles and the elegant Bertoni, but in the Dutch team everyone could play and battle. Sad for them.

Argentina were very impressive in the first round with the best players being centre-forward Leopoldo Luque and midfielders Osvaldo Ardiles and Daniel Valencia. Cesar Menotti had an abundance of midfield talent available but no substitute for Luque and it showed when he missed several games later on. Mario Kempes was pushed further forward but it was not his ‘game’ to play right up and be tightly marked. He looked and played much better when playing in a striking role, bursting forward from midfield. Unfortunately, Rene Houseman didn’t produce his best and Daniel Bertoni, only at the end. But all credit to Argentina, they were the best all round team in the competition.

Argentina practicó un catenaccio perfecto durante los segundos 45 minutos y casi le sale redondo, pero... La gran calidad e inteligencia de los holandeses al minuto 80 hizo que armaran una jugada perfecta y vistosa en donde abanicaron la pelota de lado a lado del ataque; rompieron el "achique" de la defensa de Menotti con un pelotazo en diagonal a espaldas de Tarantini que salió buscando dejar en off side a los atacantes holandeses. Actually surprised that Cruyff was alright with commenting on the match in a tv-studio, but didn’t bother to turn up for the tournament; there was a ruthlessness to him that many overlook with Van Beveren probably being the most significant casualty. This ‘78 Dutch squad played much more like a team then in the ‘74 final; perhaps the closest Holland ever came to winnning. Neeskens, VD Kerkhof,, Krol & Rensenbrink: such an embarrassment of talent & character that put Dutch football on the map -apologies abound to Rijkaard, Van Basten, Gullit, Van Persie, Kluivert & Bergkamp; but unfortunately they didn’t raise that bar… And forgive me, but I don’t think Koeman, as a manager is capable of winning a big prize. @@AFCAglory What they needed was a real centre-forward in the middle snapping up goals. They struggled at times because they played with three wingers Rep, Rene van der Kerkhof and Rensenbrink. With Ruud Geels, Holland would have been transformed but he declined to go to Argentina apparently because of political reasons.

One of the most bad tempered, abominably refereed World Cup finals ever. But obviously some people seem to like that sort of thing. A great contrast to the European Championship final of 2 years earlier that also went to extra time but was an exhibition of all that was good in the game.

The Dutch looked like they played their guts out. But Argentina was THE team that day. To think Diego Maradona could have been on that team in that World Cup! :O A solid game to me. Felicidades Argentina. Too bad it was under a strict military occupation then. :(
Argentina were very impressive in the first round with the best players being centre-forward Leopoldo Luque and midfielders Osvaldo Ardiles and Daniel Valencia. Cesar Menotti had an abundance of midfield talent available but no substitute for Luque and it showed when he missed several games later on. Mario Kempes was pushed further forward but it was not his ‘game’ to play right up and be tightly marked. He looked and played much better when playing in a striking role, bursting forward from midfield. Unfortunately, Rene Houseman didn’t produce his best and Daniel Bertoni, only at the end. But all credit to Argentina, they were the best all round team in the competition.

Sin haber visto el primer tiempo, se nota que Argentina le entrego campo y pelota a Holanda en el segundo tiempo. Holanda (equipazo de futbol inteligente, efectivo y elegante) buscó con buenas y limpias armas penetrar una defensa argentina que dejó la piel en cada pelota. Galván, Passarella y Tarantini fueron una muralla durante todo el partido y más allá de su juego exageradamente turbulento no permitieron que Holanda pusiera nunca un tipo frente a Fillol. Argentina practicó un catenaccio perfecto durante los segundos 45 minutos y casi le sale redondo, pero...
La gran calidad e inteligencia de los holandeses al minuto 80 hizo que armaran una jugada perfecta y vistosa en donde abanicaron la pelota de lado a lado del ataque; rompieron el "achique" de la defensa de Menotti con un pelotazo en diagonal a espaldas de Tarantini que salió buscando dejar en off side a los atacantes holandeses. El centro preciso para la entrada franca de Dirk Nanninga y el cabezazo perfecto que enmudeció a un Monumental incrédulo. El gol holandés fue justo, porque fue el premio a la perseverancia en la búsqueda ante una Argentina que se había tornado muy conservadora. Gran final.
A los 45, otra vez una genialidad del laboratorio holandés; Pase de 55 metros a espaldas de Olguín buscando la entrada de Rensembrink (QEPD) que llega a tocarla al palo. Hubiese sido bastante justo si entraba pero no entró.
En el alargue, Argentina encuentra nuevamente su gran argumento ofensivo y gana el mundial: La potencia arrasadora de su delantera, encabezada por su ariete más brillante, Mario Alberto Kempes, el "10" Sin 10, no hay mundial para Argentina. Pero es en esa última media hora , donde Argentina termina de merecer lo que finalmente obtuvo. Se ve claramente que no solo Kempes, sino también Bertoni y Luque, conformaban una delantera que lanzada en velocidad y potencia, resultaba imparable. Pasarella, Tarantini, Galván, Gallego y Ardiles; supieron rodear de sudor, fe, talento, temperamento, templanza y sacrificio a sus virtuosos compañeros atacantes. Argentina no brilló. Esta afirmación es absolutamente veraz; sin embargo se ganó a ley de juego esa Copa del Mundo que levantó el gran Daniel Passarella. La Argentina del 78 no será recordada por brindar un gran espectáculo como hicieron los brasileños en el 70 y el 82 o la misma Holanda, cuatro años antes y por momentos en este mundial. Lo de Argentina fue, es y será siempre otra cosa. la fe inclaudicable, los testículos de acero templado, la determinación absoluta, la templanza en los momentos más sombríos, la pasión inigualable, la sangre caliente y la resurrección tras la adversidad de perderlo todo cuando se lo tenía a mano y volver a empezar con la misma fe y determinación. A más de esto, enormes jugadores como Fillol, Kempes, Bertoni, Pasarella, Luque, Ardiles, Gallego o Tarantini y el sacrificio innegociable de todos.
Argentina ganó con total justicia un mundial con sus armas. Si hubiese hecho trampa, la pelota de Rensembrink en el último suspiro hubiese terminado en la red. La moneda en estos casos siempre cae para el lado de la justicia.

@@AFCAglory What they needed was a real centre-forward in the middle snapping up goals. They struggled at times because they played with three wingers Rep, Rene van der Kerkhof and Rensenbrink. With Ruud Geels, Holland would have been transformed but he declined to go to Argentina apparently because of political reasons.
