0.5 oz of homemade rosemary simple syrup (1 cup white sugar, 1 cup water, chopped rosemary. Boil, then strain out rosemary)
1 oz lime juice
dash of vanilla
1/2 english cucumber, muddled
Shake with ice, then strain into chilled glass
add Topo Chico or similar sparkling water
FInish with a smoker for 1-2 minutes
(eat alongside a buzz button or Szechuan button for maximum effect)

In regards to lyrics or what songs might mean, Dave had this to say,
"That’s one of the great things about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons."
I loved that phrase instantly, because I believe when the song gets to you, you give it your own meaning, make it yours. That's why some Artists saying: "It's my song, I'll do what I want with it" is not right. No Sir, the royalties are yours, the song is My Song now, and you should not change it...
I saw them in Portland last weekend. I've been a fan since the late 90s but had never been to any of their shows, and I can't really explain how much differently I saw some of their songs performed live compared to the radio and CD versions. The heart that Dave puts into his performance and the overall talent of the entire band is just phenomenal, and their ability to change their music to sound and feel new is very impressive.
My wife and my first dance at our wedding reception was to an acoustic version of this song. The venue we chose didn’t allow amplified music so we had to give the band a copy of the song burned on CD. Our 20 year anniversary is next year. So only 84,999 reasons left to find.

I do believe the studio drumming on this song/album was done by Dave. They had another drummer then, but I think Dave redid all of the drum parts as they parted ways. Then Taylor was hired in time for the tour that followed this album.

I will likely die on this hill but I have said for the last few decades that Foo Fighters has kept Rock n Roll relevant and great. They will always be timeless been a fan since the 90s and I hope in my 50s,60s,70s and beyond that they will still be the best and cant wait to hear it on the classics radio station then
Agree-ish. Grohl himself (too many bands to name) has kept it going forward. Nostalgia rock, weren't the Stones on tour in 2023...maybe into '24, ain't moving it forward.
Commercially I can't disagree. Musically I find them overall to be formulaic, and not always a fan of their album mixes. Dont get me wrong, there are a handful of their songs I will always be able to rock with. But 85-90% of it I just don't find at all interesting. In my opinion, Jack White has carried and evolved rock more than anyone in the 2000's. Of course he isn't AS commercially big, but its dishonest to make that the one metric. Jack has not only did insane solo work, but has formed 3 bands, each rock but distinctly different from one another, and all refreshing and artistic. And the stuff he has done for music outside of making music, especially vinyl, is awesome. Jack White simply doesn't get the credit he deserves, while a more commercial band like Foo Fighters simply make music that is more accessible to a bigger audience. Which is fine, that's how you make the most money and sell out nonstop tours, but substance and artistically we can't forget about artists like Jack. Who has actively pushed the rock/blues/alt rock genre in ways no other artist has.
And I’ll die on this hill, Foo was the best thing to come out of Nirvana.
I know people have a love hate relationship with Nirvana, but I often wonder about what Nirvana could've done, given more time 😢

This song was written about one of the members of Veruca Salt, who Dave Grohl was dating at the time. You can hear her vocals, recorded over the phone, over the main part of the hook singing along with him. This is also David Lettermans' favorite song, he listened to it when recovering from heart surgery and had them play it on his last Tonight Show hosting.
Also, Foo Fighters videos always show their sense of humor and silliness. They always look like they're having a blast. Love them!

My mom showed me this song when I was around 9-10. She would always have stuff like Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Sublime, Mazzy Star and a bunch of other great artists playing in the house. You know when MTV was a thing. It’s crazy because on my way to the hospital to say goodbye. This song, my hero and Sunday came on and I guess the reality of the situation hit me.. harder than the drive over. I played her some Nora Jones, Beatles, Pink Floyd and a bunch of her favorites as we said goodbye.

Dave Grohl tells a story of being backstage at a concert and Bob Dylan approached him and said that was one of his favorite lyrics and it just floored Dave.
Everlong is and forever will be a perfect love song for me. I am not exactly sure why, but it always brings tears to my eyes when I hear the opening. Calm, yet vulnerable, sincere and just opening up as the song goes.

My 6 year old daughter loves this song... but the fact that I introduced it to her years ago gives SOLID meaning to the lyrics - if that moment could ever feel that real forever.; if anything could ever be that good again.

There are different ways of looking at this song but as a father myself some of these lines take on a meaning more about that. Like those you put there... That first moment you hold your child can everything feel this real, or can it ever be that good again? its just an incredible moment in life. Or even the "Breath out so I can breath you in" being there watching your kid take its first breath of air... Just an all around amazing song and glad its one you and your daughter can share forever!
I used to scream along to this song with my mom when she had cancer.
I went to my first ever Foo Fighters show in June, after losing my mom in November. Those lyrics were so potent in that moment.

I hear Dave Grohl's guitar parts much differently now after hearing him talk about how playing the drums influenced his guitar playing. He said that he views the low E as the kick drum, the A and D strings as the snare and the higher notes as the cymbals. Now when I listen to his playing I hear that percussive mentality in his riffs.
That’s the way a lot of guitarists, banjo, and mandolin, and stride piano players think of it. Especially when there are no drums and they have to provide the pulse. That where the boom chuck rhythms in bluegrass, and the doo wacka doo of jazz guitar come from. They’re emulating kick and snare, or stomp and clap rhythms.
I saw this song live in Dayton, Ohio at the Nutter Center in spring 2000 with my bride, married the summer before. The song that was played for our dance at the wedding was Aerosmith's Don't Want to Miss a Thing from a couple years before...but afterwards, Everlong had become 'our song', because of the way it moved us both by the performance. I lost her suddenly, a little more than a year later, and it is so hard, to this day...to listen to this song. I have become such a fan of the channel, I could not resist watching, and I especially appreciated your breakdown of the chord progressions at the beginning, speaking to the suspension, and the lack of resolution inherit in the mode, which is a key to this song. With what happened to us, to me...this dissonance is so apropos...

Every video I see of him doing anything.. especially fresh pots.. makes me relate to him more. I feel like he’s one of my close friends, but we’ve never met. This song has changed meaning for me since seeing the Foo Fighters in concert. When they close with Everlong it’s almost like a love song to their fans. Dave loves playing live and hearing the fans sing back to him. This song is him thanking the fans for singing with him, telling them that they’ll do it again soon.
For me, this song reminds me of their live shows because it’s always the last song. Dave says “we don’t say goodbye, we say this” and it gives me goosebumps every time! It’s the culmination of a 3 hour concert where they have an intense back and forth with the audience and we WISH everything could feel the real forever❤
One big exception to this was they opened on the “Broken Leg Tour”. Will always remember the band behind the curtain as the intro wound out, Dave screaming “we said we’d be back” then as they kicked into it full the curtain melted away!

This is EXACTLY why I prefer you react to Studio over live. Live should, probably, be ****highly**** recommended by fans before being the preferred first take, maybe even with more views than the studio mix, before it is viewed first (with my personal preference of doing both, if both are good, studio->live, simply because I love your analysis of throat and mouth shapes!).

Dave does one thing to me that stands out- he connects with people. Seeing him live its even more evident. He makes it feel like there is not place he'd rather be and that we are all there to rock our faces off together and it feels so amazing to be part of that with him- he takes you along and makes it feel like you are part of the show. I think their opening song "In your Honor" sums up why they are so great to listen to for me.
Saw them live twice this year and you nailed it. The energy is unmatched. He makes you feel like every show is going to be the best show.

I saw them for the first time this summer. I have seen a fair share of shows, and this show was by far the best I have ever been to. There was so much emotion and love shared throughout the show, both from the band to the crowd and vice versa. It was an emotional night, for sure.

The unplugged, acoustic version is insanely underrated. It's so good even thought he OG is just as amazing. As hard as the original goes, the softness of the acoustic version is a perfect offset and tells a different emotional story.

I love that you bring to light that you don't need to be a virtuoso to be a great performer or artist. Some of my favourite artists don't necessarily have the strongest technique or classically trained voices, but they believe in their art and that shines through into their music more than technical perfection ever could ✌️
Until you asked, i never tried to put into words what this song is for me. Then I was reminded of something the musician Ren said.
He said that he wanted his music to be a companion for people and what they were going through.
That's exactly it - Everlong for me, is a musical friend saying that whatever is happening, you're going to be okay.

A couple of interesting bits;
1) Dave has (on numerous occasions) made a point that he is not a trained musician. He is almost entirely self-taught, doesn't formally know music theory (or even how to read sheet music), and has always just learned and played by ear. Obviously, he does intuitively understand how to craft music, but it is not likely that he gives much *conscious* thought to things like chord progressions, resolutions, etc. He also has a wide range of influences. He credits the riff for Everlong to him trying to mimic a Sonic Youth song.
2) The spoken word section (with the part about holding up the father's boots and such) is actually three recordings overlaid and muddled and were supposed to be unintelligible. One piece is said to be a "love letter", one piece is a reading from a technical manual, and the third (which is the most intelligible) is a story about a studio technician's father. I don't know if any of them are really meant to have any actual relevance to the song, or if they were just chosen to create "gibberish".
I've always found it interesting that folks tend to put talent into a trained box. I feel like they miss out when they are exposed to a natural self taught and some even, God given gift. Ironically, those folks never realize how amazing that gift truly is which if they knew, makes it even more special. Just a thought from a guy who was blessed to experience it first hand. Peace
Which I applaud and resepct him for. Not just anyone can learn music by ear. That is how I initially learned piano before TH-cam was a big thing, or got lessons of my own. But at the same time that basic lack of knowledge also makes his music sound formulaic, stagnant and overall the same after a while. Being self taught is amazing, but it will stunt creativity and a means to evolve your sound or playing. It's why Foo Fighters in 2024 sound just like the Foo Fighters during the Everlong era. lol And hey, its gotten them insane commercial success, so I can't shame it too much. But its why I never get excited for a new album by them, because I already know exactly how its going to sound. lol It's why I will ALWAYS prefer Queens of the Stone Age or Nirvana Dave. Where he was just highly skilled at doing a certain thing, and didn't have creative control over everything else. lol
The spoken word sections remind of what Pink Floyd did so often (most notably on Dark Side of the Moon). Out of context audio snippets that add a bit of weirdness to a song.
Oh yessss! The original is still undefeated. The production and performance is just incredible.

You have a fantastic ear for detail, Elizabeth. The "do doos" sound like a phone call because they Were. Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt, who was also the inspiration for the lyrics, sang her part from a hotel room in Chicago over two serparte phone lines, one basically as a monitor for her, the other for the recording. Dave said of the song, "That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly". Someting more for your study of the effects of music on the brain.

Wonderful analysis of my favourite song of all time, thank you, I really enjoyed both this and your previous analysis. I've felt like this song has been relatable for me for so many moments in my life, both good and bad, but most recently I just lost my father a few weeks ago and now there's a new element to relate to for me; the yearning, longing, anxiety and confusion brought by grief. The yearning really resonates in the lyric "If anything could ever be this good again.". The song has always brought a tear to my eye, and it always will, everlong.
For me, this song is about living in a moment and wanting that moment to never end.
I think we all want the kind of relationship that this song lays out... we all want to love someone this much, and have them love us in the same way. ...and we can all relate to the longing.

Dave Grohl was never a "heartthrob", as far as I know. His lyrics have always been incredibly heartfelt and even romantic, but I don't believe he was ever pictured in that light. I believe he could have been if he hadn't transitioned from being the drummer of Nirvana to the front man of the Foo Fighters.
I know that everyone I knew at the time (including myself) was so curious when we found out that Dave Grohl was starting a new band after the unbelievably tragic end of Nirvana, and we were blown away when we first heard the Foo Fighters. It was like a blinding flash of positive energy that none of us could have ever anticipated. My friends and I were so devastated after Kurt Cobain's death that we never could have imagined something so silly, happy, comedic, and hard-hitting as what Dave Grohl brought to the world with the Foo Fighters.
Heartthrob is the wrong word imo, there’s nothing cute about him, but having seen him live 4 times there is something so sexy about him (and nearly every woman I know who likes the Foos thinks the same). I think it’s a combination of his passion, his charm, his energy, his humour and his epic talent.

He went through a very sexy phase though. It wasn't at the time of this song, but it was a part the album The color and the shape that made me double take. He cut his hair shorter, was inspired by a new relationship after a divorce so he was feeling himself and that translated through his art.

Combine that with his kindness humor and brain there was an audience of women who saw him as a sex symbol. Not many men can pull off a goatee but Dave could. Between the albums the color and the shape and In your honor he was hot but like a normal person too.
The fade in on this track always gives me goose bumps and turns on the old memory machine for me.
Back in 2021 the Foo Fighters were playing at a new venue in the area and decided to grab lunch at a diner near my house. One of my friend's parents happened to be there too. Her parents first interaction was to politely ask them to stop being rowdy, then her dad had a long conversation about jazz drummers before they left. Neither of her parents had any clue who Dave Grohl or the Foo Fighters were. It wasn't until a few days later that her mom saw Dave in an Amazon commercial and called my friend and said, "Heather, its the boy from the diner!"

I can't even finish the video before thanking you for bringing out the piano and talking about theory. The reason I started watching this and other music channels - is because of those little insights into music theory; and whenever someone starts playing along and explaining a bit of what's happening, it gets extremely rich and educational. So, please maybe do that more often 😁.

You nailed it. The backing vocals are indeed sung over a telephone. They were actually recorded during a long distance phone call with Louise Post of Veruca Salt, whom Dave Grohl was dating at the time. She sings the "doo-doo-doo" part as well as some harmonies in the chorus.
As for the whisper-talk section, it's Dave Grohl reciting a story told to him by a studio tech named Ryan Bosch. It's a pretty disturbing story about the military style punishment Bosch's dad used to subject him and his brother to. There's also Grohl reading from a couple different books. I don't think any of it is necessarily supposed to connect to the meaning of the song. It's just texture.
The song and video together seem to cover the whole range of youthful experiences. There's love, longing, frustration, nirvana, triumph, nostalgia, powerlessness. It really is a fever dream. And by waking up to that G instead of the tonic it feels related but new. You're not back home, the same. It's a new world.

I think this was possibly the greatest song of its decade. I feel disappointment to come out of its incredible spell of longing and passion, powerful musical moments laughed over.

Thank you first of all. It makes me think of childhood innocence aside from relationships. Those snow days when you had so much fun with your friends, but you knew tomorrow the snow would probably be gone, you never wanted it to end. And you're so on the money about live versions and studio versions deserving their own reviews. I also couldn't agree more that the version you hear first affects your future experience of the other. A good comparison could be reading the book before seeing the film/theatre adaptation or vice versa. Love your content x

What should strike you, is that this came out in 1997, over 25 years before the concert version of this song you analyzed. The beautiful takeaway from that is the meaning behind it. In the concert version, it was basically Dave's love/thank-you letter to the audience. The original was inspired by Grohl's ongoing romance with Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt. That makes it even more beautiful, I believe.
When talking about Dave. He is old school. He believes success comes from non-stop hard work and dedication.

So as a drummer. This song can be intense. It is demanding Cos of the double on the high hats. and then the fills also. But so fun to play. cos it goes from doubles on the high hats to a solo fill. that are each different in the fills. This is often a warm up song for me. Foo has such great range. Love em!
Their music video of Everlong is incredible. Not sure if you noticed the pictures on the wall of the "happy couple", it's the late great legendary drummer Taylor Hawkins in drag w/ Dave. The storytelling of The Foo Fighters is underrated & their musicianship is pure top shelf!!

You said before that you want to eventually cover their entire catalogue, to that I must suggest that any songs from Wasting Light could be done from their "Live from Studio 606" take where they did the entire album in one live set for TH-cam. It's all really well done with close camera work of everything. And Dave breaks out a serious sweat. Since you like to see singers giving their all. Maybe you could do three tracks at a time. 😊
The guitar to "Everlong" is in drop D tuning. The chords in the verse are Dmaj7, Bsus2, Gsus2, Bsus2. That would normally be a bit awkward on guitar, but the fingerings are made much easier thanks to the tuning.
sus2 is misleading for piano, I think it makes more sense to call it a 9th, since it's an interval between the drop D and the normal D string.

The lyrics bring me back to one of my bars that is unfortunately closed now. I don't have a lot of close friends that enjoy the same kind of music I do, so when I found this underground/alternative bar with local bands playing live music I felt a true sense of belonging.
Anyways, the bar announced that the owners of the place they were running their business out of were going bankrupt and they held a "goodbye night" for the bar. One of the last songs that played that night before I left was this one and everyone sang along, so the lines "if everything could ever be this real forever, if anything could ever be this good again" really resonated with me in that moment. It's one of my dearest memories and I hope I can one day experience that feeling again.

A little of a mood dampener maybe, but I always associated it with like, with a hope of others not giving up on me. I've struggled with ideation and worse and a lot of what helps me through is knowing I have people out there that care, that come back even when I push them away.

The live version could never compare with the REAL STUDIO VERSION. This is so much better
I think one of the key features in the lyrics is a sense of something which has passed on. The end of a relationship, memories of a childhood both fond and fearsom. The begging of Grohl, "promise not to stop when I say when." To say "when" is to say "I've had enough." All though he knows that in the past these words he has spoken... the bitterness of finality is to real, to present a reality. Perhaps this is why the video is framed within a dream. In our sleep we are confronted with the goings on of the day but in a way which we can handle, which is more palatable to our fragile psyche. And perhaps it gives us one more chance to experience the happily ever after which could have been.
Dave plays guitar like a drummer. I saw an interview some time ago where he explained where that lick came from. And those lyrics...remarkable! This is art and for me never gets old!!
Studio over live versions always when you're analyzing what the artist truly intended to unleash on the world.
Documentary and album Sonic Highways was amazing. Each episode, digging into the history of music in a particular city, with interviews with artists from that area, then Dave taking the transcripts of those interviews and using words and phrases to write a new song to be recorded in a beloved studio from that city. Brilliance, respect and a lot of fun.
I've always seen this song as addressing the fears of a new relationship. It's like the fear at the start of a Rollercoaster. You love it... you want it to continue... but it scares the shit out of you. "The only thing I ask of you is never to stop when I say when."
He recently had a jam sesh with Norah Jones and I remarked that he can’t read music. When she started getting technical he laughed and said he didn’t quite understand it but understands it enough to play. What a legend.
Would love to see more STP, specifically Big Empty. There's the album version (also from the Brandon Lee CROW movie), and an acoustic version on the anniversary release of the 'Purple' album.

Recently, I was listening (once again) the Pavarotti's version of "Nessun Dorma", and -in adition- I saw your análisys... and then, Patricia Janečková's wonderful and
unforgettable interpretation of the "Les Oiseaux Dans la Charmille" (what an emotion... I will always keep those voices -his and her- in my ears and in my heart).
Since there, I became a fan of you. I think your comments are not only brilliant, but also enlightening (beyond the strictly musical), like in Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb":
the concept of time and reality distortion. And "The Great Gig in thr Sky": the evolution of deep sadness until reaching liberation... simply magnificent.
For all this, I would like to suggest two of my favorite pieces of music for your consideration:
- "Machine Gun" by Jimi Hendrix , more for the instrumental aspect than for the vocal: a broken and heartbreaking guitar. A testimony to the horrors of war expressed in
guitar notes (for many people, including me, the best electric guitar solo ever). I'm referring to the 1970 New Year's Eve version at the Fillmore East ("Band of Gypsies",
50th Anniversary Edition, track 2).
- "Close to the Edge" by Yes, truly a masterpiece. Here I suggest the original version, on the album of the same name (track 1), that allows you to appreciate the voice of a
young jon anderson.

This song will forever bring me back to the last time I saw them live, March 20th, 2022, Lollapalooza Argentina. It was my first concert/festival after the pandemic, after being locked up for two years not knowing if the world was ever going to be the same again, so they were three very emotional days. They closed the festival on the last day and ended the show with Everlong as they usually do. I bawled my eyes out the whole way through, just in love with how live music makes me feel and how much I missed that, life just feels right in those moments (if everything could ever feel this real forever!). Little did I know, that would be Taylor's last show before he passed, his last song before a live audience. Everlong doesn't fail to make me cry hard after that.
"Got to promise not to stop when I say when" = Don't let my depression push you away.
This song has meant many things to many people, and I hope it means many more in the future. For me, it really speaks about being "In The Moment" with your experiences, but also about sharing and communicating with your partner and listening to them, so that you can trust them to take you out of your comfort zone and into new experiences you wouldn't get around to enjoying under your own steam.
I've been following for years and you've checked out so many of my favourites but I have yet to see anything from Florence + The Machine. That would be an amazing reaction. Florence voice is stunning and their artistry is beautiful. There are so many I would love for you to react to so I'm just going to start with "What The Water Gave Me"

If there was ever an album to do a full analysis of I think The Colour and The Shape is a great one to do. Even if you don't, go listen to this full album to hear Grohl in his full range. This is one of the first albums I ever heard and to today it is still a favorite and shapes everything I love about music to this day.

Of course to each his/her own! But I think that you should ALWAYS listen to the studio version of a song first (if possible) so that you have some context of the song before you listen to a live version. This is a PERFECT example!
While I personally agree for a few reasons, she's said her goal is to listen to the performance and voice tone/quality during a live performance, rather than the highly produced 'perfect' version of their vocals, since she is primarily about vocal analysis and appreciation.
