    I have taken over 10000 shots with this setup and here are my tips:
    - Vignette is lowest at f4 and increases as you move away from f4. It becomes a problem around f8 when the vignette cannot be removed using software.
    - Image quality is comparable to much more expensive full frame lenses, even at the edges! To get this kind of quality at f1.8, you will probably need to pay 3x more.
    - As mentioned in the video, lightroom can easily remove the vignette if you shoot in RAW. Create a preset that brightens the vignette pre-crop.
    - Distortion can be an issue (fish eye effect). If using lightroom, the auto lens profile distortion correction assumes you are using cropped sensor and will not fix the image properly. I have had success increasing the distortion correction amount from 100 to 150.
    - Used on a D610, it is an unbeatable budget full frame travel SLR.

      Thanks for the info. Very useful. You said that when shooting RAW the vignette can easily be removed in Lightroom but you also said that the vignette cannot be removed around F8 and higher F-stops using software. What if you're shooting at F8 and shooting RAW? Thanks.

    • @jonathanw2091
      @jonathanw2091 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@elektriksheep My post assumes you are always shooting in RAW. At narrow apertures, it physically covers the corner of the sensor so the vignette cannot be removed.

    FYI - This isn't the only DX lens that works on an FX body. The Tokina 11-16 f2.8 also works great, and doesn't even have vignetting when used at 15-16mm. A great way to use as a 16mm f2.8 prime 😁

    I just tried putting this on a full frame DSLR (Df) after not using it for 3 years and I was shocked to see that there was almost no vignetting when focusing close at 1.8 and reasonable or correctable amounts at other distances and open apertures. I googled the lens and FF combo and came across your post. Thanks for the run down! I'm now convinced that I'll try to run around with this lens a bit. It's very light and weather sealed it seems.

  • @PetePistachio

    One thing to consider with this lens on an FX body... if you're using higher f/stops and don't want the vignetting, you should consider using the 1.2x crop mode on your camera (supported on my D750), which basically makes this lens 42mm, but with about 16.7 megapixels (instead of 24 in FX mode). If you're using it in DX mode, it's pretty much the equivalent of a 50mm lens, except that the pixel count is way lower (about 10 MP). My point is, instead of using it in DX mode, you're better off using your 50mm FX (also a cheap but very good lens). Using it in 1.2x mode is a decent way to go, but just remember your angle of view will be the equivalent to a 42mm full-frame lens.
    I bought this 35 DX after viewing a few videos and judging that the extra money for the FX version wasn't worth it. However, the jury's still out for me, because I don't love the idea of having to crop nearly every photo in post-processing (I generally don't like the vignetting you get with it), and I already have a 24-70 f/2.8 (Tamron) that is only about a stop slower through the full zoom range. The reason I wanted the 35mm is that it is much smaller and lighter than the zoom, which I think will come in handy in certain situations. Some situations, though, are a little too tight needing a wider angle of view than 42mm gives, which would require using the heavy zoom.

    I love using the 35mm DX on my FX cameras. Thought I was going to be able to continue using it as a 35 but now the Z cameras don't let you override the DX-setting. So the camera automatically switches to crop-mode and that cannot (currently) be overrridden. Total bummer cause I LOVED the little bastard.
    Edit: I also own the 35mm 1,4 FX and definitely prefer the look of the DX on full frame!

    I was about to call bullshit on this because I've used it with my D750, it has the field of view of a 50mm on crop. But in FX-mode (important) its a 36mm. Its a great little lens, the AF is slow (don't take tracking shots with it, unless its slow moving). It also has noticeable barrel distortion on FX (its designed for DX) compared to the sigma 35 1.4. Its sharp, small, and has impressive saturation (this surprised me). Just put it in your bag as a back-up if your 24-70 or 35 1.4 dies.

    I put it regularly on my D610. Vignetting is acceptable around f4-f6 but one must crop some 5% of the picture or just one tweak in camera's trim button to get vignetting free image.
    So the ŕesult I get from this Dx 35 mm 1.8 on my 24 mil.pix.Nikon D610 is an excellent walkaround 40 mm FF lens on 20 mil.pix. Nikon D610.

      I have the d750 and am using the DX 35mm 1.8...the vignette is beginning to be too much for me! When I shoot in a sunny setting, it’s beautiful so far. But the last few shoots I’ve had indoors or overcast settings? Too much to edit out.
      I COULD try cropping out during edit...but I typically frame my photos well and want to keep everything in the shot lol still considering upgrading to FX 1.8 or try the Sigma 1.4!

      @SarveshParakh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more question James. It's pretty easy to deal with the vignetting in an image. I'm eying on this lens mainly for video. Is there any such easier way to deal with the vignetting in video?

    • @jamesaphotography1286
      @jamesaphotography1286  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The vignetting is pretty easy to remove in lightroom with photos but I'm not an an expert when it comes to video so it might be better to get the FX version for video. It only shows on the DX version with a clear background but if its a cluttered scene it won't be noticed.

      nikon has 2x 35mm 1.8's - one is for full-frame and the other is for crop-sensor. Just remember that whatever lens you put on a crop sensor is (usually) 1.5x the stated focal length. 35 x 1.5 = 52mm. Your kit lens says 18-55 but its really just a 24-70 equivalent. 18(27)-55(82) / 27-82mm.

    IF you had to choose between the “best” lenses for manual focusing for the Z6 (ie using the Rhino Arc II / Focus slider) would you opt for:
    Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S ($850)
    AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.4G ($1500!)
    Sigma ART 35mm 1.4DG HSM ($650)
    Sigma has been recommended, as the Nikkor is overpriced... but - while fitting the Z lens directly onto the Z6 - has slight advantages... I heard you can’t EXACTLY pull focus with Z lenses based on exact position of the manual focus ring??? It’s electronic and relies on autofocus to correct.
